Saw an article by courtoise the other day which was the first time I had heard anyone attribute our shocking season to a particularly poor pre-season. However the more I read the more it seemed to answer a few questions. One of which was poor early form, which he seemed to put down to poor early season fitness.
I must admit I think this was the worst pre-season I had seen for years. So hopefully when Conte comes in he will address this and hopefully we can get off to a decent tart leading to a much better season.

{Ed018's Note - I was worried when the New York Red Bulls youth team beat Chelsea last summer. It was passed off as preseason amongst my friends who support Chelsea but it certainly set the tone for the season}

Right you are, Ed. That game was bloody awful to watch. Our fullbacks were getting skinned by their 18 year old winger (he might've even been only 17). As you said, it set the tone for our horrible start to the season.
I don't like the fact that we're going back to the States for our preseason in the summer, as it's a short one with the Euros. Even Conte is at the Euros, so I don't like the decision to go that far. I would've preferred it if we stayed in Europe like we did before our title winning season.

{Ed018's Note - it would've been better to stay in Europe for sure. Either way there is a lot of work to do this summer}

Hyperthetical question here with Courtois recents comments if he were to leave who would you like to see in his place? Could be a summer of big overhaul this year which we need in my case would love to see a new English spine of the team bought or developed from the youths as I believe the next couple of years we will be rebuilding what does anyone else think?

If courtois leaves, we should go and sign butland. The boy is class.

To be honest having read comments attributed to courtoise. Seems to me he needs to try a loyalty pill. He wasn't moaning when we won the league. We have a bad season and suddenly he is hinting at hitting the eject button. To be fare it's not only the defenders who have been poor, courtoise has been poor and has been to blame for goals conceded in big games.
Imo like other players, hazard and Costa who want to go, let him and them go. Instead of punting around for a keeper go with begovic, who unlike other keepers is not heading for the exit after a year as cover. He's done well so give him the shirt.

Don't let Courtois leave. He's an astonishing talent. He hasn't returned to his pre-injury level, but we all know he can get there again. There's no keeper I'd rather have than him right now. He's young and already world class.

Jackson even Neur? This guy is like shoulders above everyone else.

Yeah but Courtois is still so so young for a keeper. Plus, I didn't consider Neuer as he's not going to leave Bayern any time soon :-P
German superstar starting for the biggest German club. He's not going anywhere.

Loyalty is something extremely important when it comes to the club. Even players who are not regular starters and they're loyal to the club are important because that's one of the most important things influencing atmosphere within squad. If you have bad atmosphere in the squad you cannot succeed.

Yes he is going to be like Oliver Kahn (probably best keeper ever with Lev Yashin) . But comments from Courtois aren't the ones we would like to hear from our players.

Really Jackson? Better than Neuer? Better than De Gea? Dare I say, better than Cech? Possibly not even in the top 5 keepers in the Premier league this Season. I have always thought he never really wanted to come back to us and selling Cech was a mistake. I guarantee he wants out in the Summer and we should go for Butland.

I agree with G8 I also never felt Courtois wanted to return, he was too settled and at some stage he would want to go back. I like the fact he comes for crosses something Cech did not do BUT he is nowhere as good as Cech at shot stopping and I do not think he has been any better than Begovic who is worth a chance with a decent defence in front of him. What concerned me with Courtois comments is the fact professional footballs should be fit on their pre-season return although not match fit and both Costa and Hazard admitted and had it pointed out that they were very unfit. If we are going to draw a line under this season ANYONE not content as they should be, need to be moved on.

Take the Spanish money for Courtois and spend half of it on Butland.

{Ed002's Note - Butland is not moving.}

One thing that intrigues me about the inevitable arrival of conte is the likely use of wingbacks. While I think this role would fit players such as baba and cuadrado very nicely, I think on the whole our usual guys wouldn't do great in that role. Dave would be forced to play on the right as he isn't capable of providing the width that role requires from the left (I'd actually be interested to see if he could play as a centrehalf in a back 3). This role would suit Kennedy better than as a traditional fullback but I still don't view it as a fantastic fit. I'm not sure Pedro is good enough defensively to perform this position. I do think this would be a really good role for Willian as despite his improved numbers this season, the majority have come from set pieces. I'm really excited for Ake's reintroduction but I'm not sure he has the make-up speed to thrive in this role (same fear about Dave) . Overall I'm very intrigued about the possible change as it's something very unique but I'm not sure how suitable it is to our best players.

Assuming it's a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 of course? Conte is brighter than that, if he feels we don't have the players to play that system he won't. I actually expect him to switch between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3, possibly during a match as well. Exciting times ahead I hope.

Yes, G8 that would be the assumption. I think a 433 suits is far more than any other system but especially in the midfield. Matic would have the protection of an additional runner in front of him. Fabregas' lack of mobility wouldn't be as exposed. Our defense would be better protected and overall it would suit players better in addition to not having to learn a new system. Up front I really don't think it's that different but our forwards would be more focused on eatablishing a press and would also have another midfielder behind them to make it less vital for them to get back. Overall with our current players I'm not sure why we aren't playing that system.

I agree with you t. k, we should be playing 4-3-3 this season, our number 10 (position) doesn't contribute enough goals so leaving the 3 to press high with 3 behind is surely worth trying? Would help integrate Ruben as well. Let's hope Guus reads these pages LOL.

Conte will play 4-3-3 lads. He did it at Juve and only changed to 3-5-2 because they had solid centre backs and players that suited a wing back position. I would quite like to see 2 forwards next season!

I have always liked 2 strikers Nick so maybe an old fashioned 4-4-2 with 2 banks of 4. Second striker to drop back in when out of possession?

If Conte becomes new Chelsea manager and it seems he will. You have to be aware that he always plays formation with two strikers. None of his teams played 433 or 4231 or 4321. So, we can expect new strikers coming.

Interesting, actually he played 343 against Spain, but with two central forwards Eder and Pelle. Candreva was 3rd striker and he is right midfielder.

I'd love to see us playing with 3 attackers as our current wingers (other than Willian) haven't done much this season, especially on the left, so playing as more attacking players will be good for hazard and willian.

25 Mar 2016 13:52:46
with hazard almost certainly leaving would anyone else like to see conte do away with the rw, lw and add an extra cb and st ending the 4-2-3-1 and playing 5-2-1-2 with a rwb and lwb putting dave at lb bring cuadrado back as rwb and using kenedy has the rotating player.
cb zouma, ivanovic, either laporte, marquinoss, stones, with christensen back has rotation.
cm fabregas and one of either kroos, pogba, vidal with rlc giving cover.
cam. willian, this might not sit well with many but oscar should be sold we would likley double what we paid but i just feel like he's an unnessary luxury that the funds from a sale would be better invested elsewhere. he's too good for bench but just lacks somthing.
st: costa pressuming he stays with traore rotating.
st? remy not good enough so we need to replace i would love lacazzete, dybla, morata, aubameang, lukkaku

im hoping the squad will include rlc, christensen, traore, kenedy, begovic, ake, matic,
would like to see mikel, terry, remy, oscar, baba, hazard, pedro and a bunch of loanees we no aren't going to make the cut if we can get 120 mil which i should think is resonably conservative we can go for the 3 players we would need i. e the cb the cm and the st whilst maybe beefing the squad with the odd extra. its plausible and would mean a much more attacking style. we have the youngsters with enough quality to cover and play rotation.

It's a true Conte was using 3412&442 (4312,4132,424) in the past. If he comes to Chelsea most probably he will practice one of those formations or even both, but it all depends on squad (players) . To play 3412 you need at least 5 CBs, 4 CMs 2 RMs and 2LMs, 2CAMs and finally 4 STs.
We shall see who will leave the club and who will sign for us and according to that new manager can make the plan. 🙋.
