The observations made in the article and reasonable but I very much doubt there is a conspiracy against Liverpool.

I think the Gusto and Elliot sending off’s do bare comparison if only for VAR screen being frozen at the point of impact on both occasions. There was no consideration about intent or genuinely playing the ball first.

Subjective decisions are difficult to evaluate on every level but factual decisions should be easy and the recent mistakes are just a symptom of incompetence by a group of people who “may” not be fit for purpose:

The effect VAR has on a stadium atmosphere and a team’s reaction has never been adequately evaluated in my opinion.

2.) 02 Oct 2023 11:20:54
Further to my reply on VAR.

I think generally the standard of refereeing has deteriorated since the introduction of VAR. This may well be a coincidence but I think it has made the match officials continually question their own ability and to a certain extent divorcé themselves from match responsibility.

Interesting thoughts Tom, I agree that there isn't a conspiracy against Liverpool but I fully understand the fans being frustrated and feeling that way.

It certainly seems that referees in England are opposed to the encroachment of technology into their jobs to some extent and this appears to have led to a culture where a lack of trust between themselves and VAR exists. Personally, I find it surprising that this has happened. Difficult to put yourself in the shoes of someone else, but I would like to believe that I would see VAR as a useful tool to refer to in order to ensure I was doing my job as well as possible.

With regards to VAR being used for offside decisions, I am at a loss as to why the semi-automated system used in the world cup (and champions league? I forget. ) wasn't adopted with immediate effect in the premier league. It seemed faster, and is surely more reliable (? ), than manually drawing lines on the pitch. Was there a reason cited for why this technology was not voted through?

4.) 02 Oct 2023 15:04:24
It always feels like it only happens you your own team, I recall naby keita studding chalobah in the nuts in a cup final LFC went on to win, rather than a league game less than 10 games into a season, or a mane elbow 15 seconds into a game on azpi, replays showed him look across and then lead with his elbow flattering azpi, decisions went for LFC.

The comparison to gustos I keep reading and find so different as the stills and screen shot of the impact in both is bad, gusto got the ball well before digne, booting it away and momentum caused the impact, Jones went OVER the ball and planted his studs into bissoumas planted ankle, could of been a break, it’s a lot worse, so ref got that right, the Diaz goal is disgusting error, and the rule of once game restarts it can’t be changed is wrong, whistle should of gone instantly when realised and right decision made, spurs couldn’t of argued as it’s so clearly a goal, not only a VAR error though as linesman gave it as offside.

so without var interception that goal is chalked off, Liverpool fans and even Steven warnock ex LFC player talking about Howard Webb replayed a game in America so is that an option are embarrassing. It’s a mistake and it’s infuriating, but it’s one that’s gone against you, we all have them, I find the big media backlash a little laughable, I thought Mike Dean saying he saw the cuccurella hair pull and didn’t intervene because he didn’t want to put his mate Anthony Taylor in firing line for missing it 10x worse and actual cheating.

The spurs player who’s been getting racially abused online who give freekick away, got slight touch on the ball then got player, LFC got freekick that led to the equaliser, He got ball first so in the logic of being wrong, LFC got that one in there favour.

There is a difference in getting the ball then the player, than van dijks v Newcastle where he went through the player to get the ball as the last man. Key bit, as the last man, the jota first yellow is laughable, may of touched him to cause him tripping himself up but not everything has to be a yellow card, but once on a yellow jota has to keep his head, once he makes second foul what's ref to do, has to book him, puts himself in a hole.

On VAR, the dilemma, if it takes 4 min to check, then fine as long as right conclusion is made, but if it takes 4 min and multiple replays is it clear and obvious? And it’s the people / officials, we have the worst ones in Europe, probably because the abuse reds get from grassroots level, why would anyone choose to go through it,

5.) 02 Oct 2023 15:47:16
Matt, I have no idea in refs at “grassroots” level get the same, less or worse abuse overseas as they do in this country but I find that difficult to except that as a reason for our refereeing standards, in my opinion, dropping.

I think the structure of refereeing and its management needs a complete “honest” overhaul. They continue to make excuses, acting like the membership of a private club that marks its own homework.

The first thing they need to do is to except that the current refereeing standards are not good enough. They are part of the Premiership and EFL package that is applauded by so many and therefore very important.

6.) 02 Oct 2023 16:22:11
Good post Matt I agree with most of what you've said, Tom I think it's a salient point about an overhaul.

The introduction of technology (Hawkeye, VAR etc) has fundamentally changed the way a game is officiated and instead of trying to retrofit it to the game, there needs to be some kind of reform with the technology included as a standard. I think this would go a long way to getting buy in from referees and would clearly outline to fans what the situation is.

Currently, my preference is for the big decisions (dangerous play, red cards, handballs, goals etc) to automatically be reviewed and if there is any debate for the referee to look at the screen. The referee can then review and choose whether to stick or twist. That way the final decision always rests with the on-pitch referee.

For offsides, the way I see it there are two approaches. The first (my preference) would be to revise the offside rule in light of the available technology so that we no longer have players being ruled offside because their shoulder is millimetres ahead of the defender. The rule was introduced to prevent goal hanging and I think it has gone well beyond it's original intention now. Alternatively we remain with the status quo regarding the rules and we use the semi-automatic technology to speed up the process and give a more accurate picture as to when the ball is actually played.

7.) 02 Oct 2023 17:09:14
RBD, I struggle with subjective decisions being part of the VAR process.

Measurable decisions being checked by VAR I’m ok with.

8.) 02 Oct 2023 19:09:34
Conspiracy against Liverpool? Lol weren’t they being called LiVARpool a couple seasons ago as they seemed to get all the decisions? ? the refs in the PL and league cup etc are v v poor, we saw that against Brighton with Broja being given offside despite being in his own half. The Liverpool goal in the above post. They need to change who the VAR refs are. That way they won’t have ‘friends’ who they’re trying to protect etc.

9.) 02 Oct 2023 19:12:16
I see grassroots refs weekly and I’ve seen young refs get so much grief and one even cry on the pitch Because he was blamed for a kid being hurt for letting to many tackles go, and this is u14 football, admittedly he was a young referee but it’s was horrible to see, and I’ve been told when you go the junior premier league, eastern junior alliance And another youth level I can’t remember as it a higher level and more serious , emotions and tensions are raised so parents / coaches can be more vocal, we have to sign documents to respect referees as parents and no shouting to referee,

But a question, have referees always been this poor or where we never looking and scrutinising officials to the level we are today, ref watch on sky for example, ex referees on shows and instantly comment on decisions, more camera angles, slow motion, close ups of tackles, play acting etc ? The consequences are massive so we focus on them as much as the football?

10.) 02 Oct 2023 20:35:50
Matt, my point about grassroots football in this country and refs being abused at that level, is it any worse than other countries who seem to provide better standards of referees. Although I guess that assessment may well be wrong as we don’t see all the games of other countries.

Your point about scrutiny is valid but again don’t other countries refs get equally as scrutinised?

I always thought Belotti would make sense for Chelsea to look at but, given he had a less than impressive season last year, he is perhaps down the pecking order in terms of transfer targets. Icardi would be an incredible signing and, as a Liverpool fan, would have me worried. He does come with a lot of baggage though so perhaps not quite the perfect fit.
