ed just watched RM vs Guangzhou highlights... as expected absolute romping.

i know you are not one for speculation so i understand if you choose not to answer this, i hope however, that you humour me.

Di Maria is absolute class. The winger that so many think we desperately need. Can score goals and create goals. How much would you think we would need to offer RM to acquire his services. I realise this depends on RM wanting to sell but surely as David Levy's right hand man has said "everyone has a price". And i know Di Maria has suupposedly fallen out with the powers at RM.

Thanks for the great work you continue to do.

Melbourne CFC {Ed018's Note - Madrid do not want to sell him at the moment. With how inflated the prices are for these players now, i'd bet between 30-35 million may be considered}

hi ed, would you ever think chelsea would be interested in barton? would you like to see him at the bridge? im really not sure, reckon he would fit in but would he disrupt things off the pitch? {Ed018's Note -No and No}

i cant understand why i keep hearing chelsea have too many players and cant sign anymore, man city have nearly 50 first teamers, why cant we transfer list a few like anelka and buy a few more? i know we can only register 24 or whatever but that hasnt stopped city, we need some big investment to keep up with the pack

hi ed(s)
just wondering could you tell me anything about the boy lucas paizon were getting in january? dont know much about him, would he be coming straight into the 1st team do you think? would he be regarded as a "wonderkid"?

also do you know has there been any clubs who have confirmed there intrest in anelka? or are we activly seeking to offload him? i assume he doesnt actually want to leave the chels?

thanks in advance...Jack {Ed018's Note - Piazon has been dubbed the next Kaka, hopefully he can produce like Kaka. Ive only had the chance to see him play once and he looked very good on the. He will probably get some first team time. Ive heard very little about teams interested in Anelka, other than hearing PSG was interested a few weeks ago}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I thought ganso was the next kaka. And is piazon better then ganso? {Ed018's Note - He's younger than Ganso and probably isn't to his level yet but i expect him to reach that level and beyond

Hes quite well connected at the club and I wonder if someone briefed him to save face possibly.

Here's a thought, lets go for Mario Goetze. Superb player with age on his side. Come on AVB make it happen

Believable2 Unbelievable6

Are you saying this because he got linked with Manchester United in todays papers?

Agree0 Disagree0

No, didn't know he was linked with them? Don't really read papers so that's probably why.

Sky Italia says Chelsea are set to beat the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan for the midfielder(Fernando), who enjoyed great success under Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas last season

Believable2 Unbelievable2

Another DM, why are we chasing him?

Agree0 Disagree0

I hope he is not another defensive midfielder..... we need creativity..... all other clubs are buying offensive...

I'd rather have M'villa.

ORIOL DEAL COMPLETED
Posted on: Thu 04 Aug 2011

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Oriol Romeu Vidal from Barcelona on a four-year-contract.

Can you explain to us what this rumour is about them being able to buy him straight back for virtually nothing if he turns out to be good. Is this true or not as bad as it seems or are we getting ripped off in this deal? {Ed002's Note - I don't know the exact details but there are seemingly clauses that allow the player to be bought back at a fixed amount for two years and at an amount equivalent to any other offer after that - which is a typical "first option" clause.}

Believable1 Unbelievable4

Accoding to the papers there was a similar one for when Bojan moved to Roma, which said that Barca can buy him back for the same price they sold him unless Roma pay another.... i think they said 20mill to Barca. I dont know if this is true however. Or even if Oriol has the same deal going on. {Ed002's Note - It is correct.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Unsure on what this means.So if barca come back next season with 10m does that mean Chelsea have to accept {Ed002's Note - Clearly you did not read the answer I gave - "I don't know the exact details".}

Agree0 Disagree0

The deal is between the 2 clubs. If Barca offer the agreed amount during the first 2 years, then Chelsea have to accept. However the player is under no obligation to agree to resign for Barca. Therefore i wouldnt be too worried im sure Chelsea have added a clause in his contract with a promise of a big pay rise if Barca come back calling.

Agree0 Disagree0

They can buy him back for 2013 or Chelsea can pay more to keep him I think please correct me if Im wrong.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ah this 3rd comment is better explanitory eds comment left me still confused

Hi Ed, I just wanted to know if you think Sturridge will stay at the club this season and not go out on loan? thankyou {Ed002's Note - I expect he will stay.}

Believable3 Unbelievable3

What do you think will happen with mceachran, i hope he stays, it would be good for him to learn and play with lampard. {Ed002's Note - IT is possible he will stay but there remains the chance of a season's loan to get experience. It is all really down to how much time he will get on the pitch.}

Maybe the wrong place to ask this question but how do Spain, Italy and France get away with massive tax concessions for footballers when there economies are dreadful and worse than ours...
(I do realise I may have answered my own question here but don't know the mechanics of the tax concession...)
Any idea Ed?

{Ed002's Note - I have lived much of the past 30 in Cap d'ail in France or in Monaco a few hundred feet away and understand the workings of the French tax system (although remain in dispute) and the complexities are not really worthy of discussion. Keep in mind that salary "packages" for players are not necessarily provided in "hard cash" per se. However, whilst EPL clubs (excepting Manchester City) are not in a position to meet the demands of certain players in cash, efforts are made to try and put together packages that should be attractive in other ways - and this is what clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United have done in an attempt to lure the likes of Aguero. On a related subject is an answer to a Manchester United fan given on such "packages" from a couple of days back: Glad you asked about the “package” issue Syd. There are a number of ways that have been taken to overcome a disparity in wages required and wages available. I can cite examples from a few years ago of players from one particular club being registered through one business in Monaco where two of the directors of the business were local residents thereby legalising the tax free payment process. I can also cite one professional football only paid in “collectable” cars, which were a tax free means of means of payment in the UK. That loophole has gone, together with another that saw a current (at least last season) EPL player paid only in oil paintings via an offshore company based from his home in Monaco. Nowadays many, probably most, players operate through limited companies whereby legitimate expenses can be deducted and payments may be taken as dividends. This provides some tax advantages and allows money to be rolled in to pension schemes and trusts to certain tax or other limits. I also know of a couple of players who run “enterprises” where the scope of the business includes the provision of sporting services and also undertaken property renovations under the same umbrella. This has recently been frowned upon by the revenue. The packages being put together for plays such as Aguero are rather different. Effectively, the players are offered a deal no more than that of the other higher paid players at the club. There is then a value-based bonus payable on leaving the club and it is calculated as being a percentage of the amount received above either the amount originally paid for the player or the write-down value of the player. In the case of one example package I am aware of, this has been as much as 100%. To give a couple of simplified worked examples, If our hero (Syd Falcao) is purchased for £40M on a salary of £6M per year and other costs (insurance, bonuses etc.) of say £2M his cost to the club over his 5 year contract is £80M written down at £16M a year. So his year 1 value is £80M, year 2 £64M, year 3 £48M etc.. If the club were to sell the player after three years for £60M and had negotiated a deal whereby the player would get 100% of the cost above the written down value, then our hero will, on departure, receive a “bonus” of £12M (£60M-£48M). Alternatively, the write down costs may be ignored and a straight sliding scale applied. For example, if sold after one year he might receive 20% of the difference (value received – purchase price), year 2 40% of the difference, year 3 on 60% of the difference. So if our hero was bought for £40M and sold two years on for £55M he would receive £6M (40% of £15M difference). Add to this sort of deal a few tweaks over image rights etc. and suddenly it (hopefully) becomes much clearer how deals can be struck through the “package” route. I appreciate I have rambled a bit here, but hopefully it is clear and allows you to see how clubs can and do look to alternate solutions to some of these seemingly tough problems.}

Very detailed and time consuming reply... Thank you

Agree0 Disagree0

You are a hero for making the time to explain this

Agree0 Disagree0

Thank you for taking the time to explain in such detail the inner workings of the transfer market.It certainly allows me and I would think many others to understand and almost be able to predict when certain players, or at least their agents seem hell bent on pushing for a transfer at a given time in their carreers i.e when they consider that they are at peak sale value.Can you tell me ED002 is the 20% depreciation value you used a typical write down value or was it just for illuustration purposes.Thanks once again for giving such amazing insight Im glad you're a true blue or I would imagine every other supporter would be trying to lure you to oversee their club site for you really do bring a hell of a lot more than just rumours to this site.No disrespect to the other EDs on this site for I appreciate all your efforts. {Ed002's Note - The players are typically written down over the length of their contract so 25% per year over four years, 20% over five etc.. From an accounting perspective the FFP also allow the players to be written down completely in the first year - but I don't know of any clubs that take such an approach.}

ed, do you think frank lampard is actually part of AVB's plans for the season or perhaps, the usual player power comes in. {Ed002's Note - We have seen through the bid for Pastore that there was an effort to find a replacement for him and obviously in the longer term something needs to be done. In the interim, he is fit and playing well so it is not a crisis just yet. Kevin De Bruyne remains an option for the future but I still think it is a little early for him.}

ED02 Porto have increased there ownership of Moutinho this is normally a signal they are willing to sell the player are we back in for him & also is it true Flcao has a clause that if a club bids before september £28 mil he can go? {Ed002's Note - I do not know what Falcao's contract states but Porto can effectively ask what they want for a player outside of Portugal. They have already made it clear to Atletico Madrid and Chelsea that they do not wish to sell him, and may need to tell Malaga and Real Madrid the same. As for Moutinho I understand that it is not just Chelsea who have an interest in the player. I would guess that Porto are as you suggest simply readying themselves for a bid. As third party ownership of players is not allowed if the are playing in England, it would be necessary to obtain 100% of the player' rights in any case.}
