Marc Cucurella’s name is coming up again according to Nizaar Kinsella. Clearly means Chelsea will be looking at signing a LWB in the summer.

Would be much smarter to give Maatsen a chance instead. Will be the ideal moment to integrate him with Chilwell hopefully returning from injury slowly next season.

If there’s an opportunity to sign a player like Cucurella, I think the club should take it.

He's a good player, but not at all an elite level player. No reason to think Maatsen can't replicate his level soon. Championship is also an excellent preparatory league for PL football.

Alphonso Davies, now there's a fullback you try to get if there's a chance he'd join. But Cucurella? Good player, but probably not a real upgrade on what we've got.

In general I agree with you Jackson that the practice of purchasing squad players rather than promoting youth isn’t beneficial. The one thing I will say is that we are desperately short of depth at the wingback position which has been exposed by the prolonged absence of James and chilwell. Dave and alonso don’t quite have the legs anymore and CHO/ Pulisic haven’t worked there when deputizing. I can’t speak on whether maatsen is ready as I don’t watch him enough but I will say I’d feel much better going into next year if we at least had 3 dependable options.

The best solution is let the club to solve LB issue if there is one at all.

Marc Cucurella is far more dependable than Ian Maasten, they are not at the same level in any lway as long as that LB/ LWB position is concerned; if I had the option to pick one, I will pick Marc Cucurella all day long, I even think Cucurella is amongst one of the top 6 LB/ WB that’s out there at the moment and should draw comparison with Chilwell- not Ian Maasten.
Marc is a first team player (that doesn’t mean that he won’t sit some games out or can’t play as a backup in a team like Chelsea) . I just think a stronger bench or better depth gives one the edge in football, hence if you have the opportunity to buy, always go for the best whether as backup or no backup.

I have nothing against promoting the youth players but in this case, I pick Cucurella all day (that if Brighton doesn’t slap an astronomical fee on him as they should because he’s a quality player) .
