Ed, with Chelsea having to tie down Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Borini & Kakuka with new and improved contracts, is this window and next summers window going to be more about handing out contracts rather than buying players? {ed's note - more than likely mate, there won't be much movement in or out unless it is for replacements to those that want to leave.}

Hey Ed, are these the most realistic signings for Chelsea: Gregory Van der Wiel for defense, Armin Bacinovic or Bastian Schweinsteiger for midfield and Romelu Lukaku for attack? Give me your opinion. {ed's note - Van Der Wiel yes, Schweinsteiger I think will be priced out of reach, not sure on Bacinovic, I have not got any solid info on him and Chelsea but it is certainly possible. I do think Lukaku is an option, the perfect future replacement for Drogba.}

{Editor's Note: Efforts will be made to take Van Der Wiel to Chelsea at some point.}

So Ed your saying that Chelsea are interested in signing him and its not just a rumour? {ed's note - that is exactly what he is saying, Srna seems to be the back up option.}

Hey ed, don't you suppose that Chelsea should target younger options for their defense especially for right back? Bosingwa will 29 next year and they want to sign another 29 year old in Srna. They should try to get Van Der Wiel or Cesar Azipilcueta to back up Bosingwa and be his eventual successor. Chelsea should also renew his deal.

{Editor's Note: Efforts will be made to take Van Der Wiel to Chelsea at some point.}

Chelsea are linked with a move for Fulham CB Brede Hangeland. Honestly he's great defender and would not be too costly for us. What's your thoughts Ed?

{Editor's Note: A good stop gap - but that is all.}

Chelsea Rumours
DEF: Given our current defensive concerns, notably the injuries to JT and Alex it is clear that the squad is a bit on the lean side, particularly when it comes to defenders, long a hallmark of successful Chelsea teams.

For backs we are obviously interested in Darijo Srna, who will probably come in on a free transfer next summer, and David Luiz (and Neven Subotic), for whom's signature we will compete with the usual suspects, Manchester City, Real Madrid etc. There have been a lot of rumours about Philippe Mexes signing from Roma, this would not necessarily be unwelcome given our current concerning lack of Centre backs however signing the more youthful David Luiz or Neven Subotic would be more desirable. Recent rumours have also linked us with Rolando of Porto.

We already have a reasonably strong contingent of young backs; Slobodan Rajkovic, Tomáš Kalas, Michael Mancienne, Jeffrey Bruma, Ryan Bertrand and Patrick van Anholt, who are either on loan or with the first team this year gaining some valuable experience. This is good but the question of how many are willing to wait for their transition into the first team (and how many are actually good enough for the first team) is one that will require good judgement by management. At present I'd only rate Bruma, van Anholt and Kalas as being able to make the transition into the first team, so cover will be required.

Juan Manuel Vargas and Fabio Coentrao need to be considered, Ashley is 30 in December and succession planning must occur, hopefully Yuri Zhirkov may see more time as a left mid in future, and a powerful attacking wingback is a must. Coentrao is being heavily linked to Liverpool, hopefully he either stays at Benfica at present or he signs and Liverpool fail to secure a European berth for next season. Vargas is at the floundering Fiorentina, however Manchester City and Real Madrid have both been previously interested in him so we'll have a fight on our hands to sign him. Gareth Bale is the complete wingback but will be horrendously overpriced, his signature will depend upon more than our wealthy benefactor, UCL success could help.

On the right Bosingwa and probable signing Darijo Srna, who will both be 29 by mid season next year will be useful, but again succession for maturing players must be considered. Dani Alves may be available as well. Gregory van Wiel could be an alternative for the future, too. What bother me about him is, that he plays lower-than-average under pressure, what the World Cup showed. Srna should be the main target on winter transfer period, a very strong player, whose contract expires soon

MID: We may still need to stiffen up our defensive midfield but we should wait and see how our current combination of Mikel, Essien and Ramires works. Oriel Romeu, Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe, Gueida Fofana and Axel Witsel now the best options, Nemanja Matic probably won't make it. Bastian Schweinsteiger might be available next summer and would be an ideal signing if available.

There has to be some longer term plans for the right wing. We have Jacopo Sala as a right mid but we will want to add at least one right winger to the team. There's the young Shaktar Donetsk pair of Alex Teixeira, 20 and Douglas Costa, 19. Teixeira was the star of the U 20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009, while Costa has been dubbed the next Ronaldinho. Another great prospect is Deportivo's new signing Uruguayan winger Urreta, young, fast and very creative, everything we need.

Next season when Cesc returns and Barca youngster Thaigo Alcantara is suddenly pushed to the outer he may be considered.

Diego Perotti and Antoine Griezmann are all in play to back up Kakuta on the left once Malouda, now 30, moves on.

We have Jacob Mellis but with Alan Dzagoev and Javier Pastore are the targets for that role and all possessing great talent, one of them may replace Mellis.

FWD: For future strikers, there are several options, Gervinho and Seydou Doumbia are all potential support strikers for a Chelsea after Anelka whom one of them could effectively replace. Doumbia's move to CSKA moves him into the orbit of a club with which we enjoy good relations and also has Tomas Necid, Keisuke Honda and Alan Dzagoev.

We need to come to a deal with Santos to seal up Neymar (and Paulo Henrique Ganso) for the future.

Romelu Lukaku is a must signing, but he needn't necessarily join the team yet, a loan back to Anderlecht would be ideal.

Lacina Traore with his great height would make an ideal 'super sub' in the mold of Tore Andre Flo, tall and dangerous near goal.

Drogba will be hard to replace Lukaku will still be too young to fully take over Didier's role when Drogba retires, Kalou will have to step up and another big name will be needed too, one of the younger hungrier trio of Pato or Sergio Aguero would be best.

We also have a few young forwards, Daniel Sturridge, Milan Lalkovic, who has a big future and Fabio Borini who also has great potential, but may not stay with Chelsea, hopefully Kakuta will though. Giorgi Chanturia is at Vitesse with Delac and Rajkovic, though unlike them he may be at Chelsea in the near future. Cedric Bakambu, France's young star should be considered as well.

While era of big spending is undoubtedly over I do see some opportunities for large investments, to replace Drogba, Lampard and Essien for example, though the hope will be that these roles can be filled relatively cost effectively. Opportunities such as the one potentially developing in Munich between Schweinsteiger and Bayern management and van Gaal may also be pounced upon.

I'm not suggesting all of this spending, nor all at once there will be a process to gradually reduce the age of the team while (hopefully) maintaining our competitive edge.

Your thoughts Ed?

{Editor's Note: Firstly, thank you for the well written posting. Before our resident manic depressive steps in to say that the days of wine and roses are over and explain how bleak the outlook is, I would say that most clubs, including CXhelsea, do not look to the top in of the market in every position. Clubs are looking to improve their Academies and bring youth through and looking for young prospects from elsewhere. With few exceptions (e.g. Juventus in the 90s), clubs who have sustained success at the highest levels have only ever made one or two key player replacements per season – and broadly this is true of what has been happening at Chelsea for the past three or four seasons. Moving for the players you are proposing, all of which are talented, would see Chelsea return to the model of seven years ago or the model of Manchester City the past couple of years. In the first instance Chelsea will be looking to secure the contracts of players who have agreements expiring this year – that includes Kakuta, Bosingwa, Ivanovic among others whose contracts will likely not be renewed (Hilario, Borini). So I do expect players to be coming in, perhaps including one or two “name” players, but I don’t expect the revolution you are expecting, or perhaps hoping for.}

Hey Ed, any chance of Chelsea signing Napoli forward Ezequiel Lavezzi considering we were interested in him a few years ago?

{Editor's Note: I very much doubt it - he is contracted until 2015 and the only English club to have shown any real interest for a while is Liverpool.}

Hey Ed, any chance of Chelsea signing Broussia Dortmund midfield maestro Nuri Sahin because the type of midfielder they need. {ed's note - I doubt it, unless he asks for a move.}

What's your thoughts ED? {ed's note -is Bosingwa not leaving? His contract is up at the end of the season after all. I think you are right about the likely signings, though I think Mexes is a possibility too. I mean the positions that Chelsea are looking at, central mid and striker. I don't think Llorente is likely or Martinez, but I could be wrong.}
