My Chelsea XI of the Last Decade
(My own, feel free to comment yours and suggest changes!)
GK: Cech: Not much to say, amazing goalkeeper, steal-of-a-buy, one of the best in the world and arguably the best in the EPL.
RB: Paulo Ferreira: Always given his heart and energy for us, great stalwart and been a loyal servant to us, the fact he won every trophy with us shows how loyal he had been.
CB: John Terry: Captain, Leader Legend. That sums him up.
CB: Ricardo Carvalho: Only realised how much we missed him after he left, perfect foil for Terry and worked brilliantly, even scored a few goals.
LB: Ashley Cole: Off pitch, he is a t**t, not going to lie. On pitch he has been a hero and saved us with goal line clearances this year so much.
CDM: Claude Makalele: Easily the best in his position, had every attribute needed for the job and the role became named after him which shows his brilliance.
CM: Juan Mata: Integral playmaker who is already brilliant and can only get better, could be our own little Xavi. Volley against United at SW6 is one of my favourite goals of all time.
CM/CAM: Frank Lampard: Honest Frank, my role-model and hero and an absolute legend in my eyes. Penalty champion, free-kick extraordinaire and perfect playmaker.
CF: Didier Drogba: LEGEND. Penalty against Bayern Munich sums his entire career up. Goals.
ST: Gianfranco Zola: A retired shirt from an Italian Maestro, one of the greatest players to grace a Chelsea shirt and was amazing to see him in it.
ST: Roberto Di Matteo: Scored vital goals in playing career, but more importantly... Did the impossible. Proved good players can be good managers and saved our club from our lowest point in our history to conquer the world. Not bad for two months work.
Remember, I'm not that old xD so I only remember 1997 onwards, but feel free to comment. Special mentions to Joe Cole, Nico Anelka, Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink and Branislav Ivanovic!
CFCFOREVER!

Believable4 Unbelievable1

Mata isn't a CM, he's a CF, (behind the strikers)/CAM, or more of a winger. Drogba is a striker, not a CF. Zola was a CF, not an out and out striker, and RDM was a wide midfielder, not a striker. Except from most of them being out if position? I agree with a lot of it. If this is since 2000, I'd have to say swap Carvalho for Desailly, and Petrescu for Ferreira. Also Gudjohnsen for mata, as he's only had one season, so a 4-2-3-1 of; Cech,

Petrescu, Desailly, JT, Ash,

Frank, Claude

Zola, Gudjohnsen, Di Matteo

Drogba

With Gudjohnsen in a CF Role, but the 3 attacking mind would obviously rotate.
My bench would probably include Robben (My favourite player, the heart is ruling the head I think), Cudicini, Hassbaink, Essien and Gallas

Roweycfc

Agree1 Disagree1

Di Matteo was not a striker.

IB.

Agree3 Disagree0

Why is Di Matteo up front when he plays CM? And why is Drogba playing behind Zola and Di Matteo? No Arjen Robben, was unbelievable for Chelsea and should never have been sold!

EDITOR

Agree0 Disagree0

People need to understand that some users of this site will be either very young or old, meaning they may not understand how to use the forums and search functions etc etc, I know I didn't for a while. Also not everyone is a natural English speaker so may have no idea why Eds are called Ed, and then of course some posters are just trolls (not the type that live under a bridge, the type that prowl forums such as these looking to wind up and annoy as many people as they can) It's possible the OP fits into one or several of these categories. {Ed002's Note -

West ham would be the ideal club to send Lukaku out on loan too in my opinion. Big Sam likes to play that long ball physical game, which would suit all Lukaku's strengths down to a tee. A front 2 of Carlton Cole and Lukaku would cause most teams problems i reckon
Chelsea Mole

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Stoke play it better than west ham

Agree0 Disagree0

I just want him to get a lot of games at a high level of play.

Stoke would be less likely to play him

What has happened to Neymar, last summer he was liked to all the top clubs but wanted to play in the club world championships. He has done that now so why hasn't Chelsea (who were very interested) showed any interest.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He wants to stay in Brazil until the 2014 world cup. MB

ed with avb taking over at spurs and his admiration for joao moutinho, do you think spurs would look to move modric on to fund a move for him? {Ed002's Note - I really don't know.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

03 Jul 2012 16:00:57
AVB confirmed "head coach" of spuds. Well I guess thats 6 points for us guys :).
Okay on a more serious note, I have nothing against AVB, he was young, naïve and almost wrecked our season, but it was saved by Robbie. So..... I guess I wish him luck....... Not just in spuds though :).

ELI

Believable0 Unbelievable1

To be fair he took on too much of a job by coming to us hes 33/34 and managed porto which isnt really hard i mean mourinho won the champions league with them (hes a quality manager but that wasnt an amazing team) boas needs to work his way up to a big job

curt

Agree3 Disagree6

To be fair, your players almost ruined you're season because they didn't want to play for him, he was sent with a mission to dismantle the old guard , they didn't like it and performed a lot better for someone they thought had no authority, AVB had no chance, and I'm a toon fan not spurs

Agree6 Disagree4

Di matteo no authority ??

is that why the team played his tactics to perfection.....

curt

Agree1 Disagree6

What the same tactics that were implemented by Mourinho nope sorry mourinho doesn't just park the bus

Agree2 Disagree2

We parked the bus against bayern and barca which to be honest any team would need to do to stand a chance of beating them

newcastle wouldnt even last 45 minutes against barca the ref would call the game off to save you embarressment

mourinhos tactics were get a 1-0 lead and defend it and he done amazing things at the club

di matteo 'parks the bus' in 3 games of a season and gets slated

go back to your own page

curt

Agree3 Disagree3

I actually agree the players were penguins. no respect, should of still played for us fans. lamps and co didnt like it because theyve been past it for 2 years now

Agree3 Disagree1

You cant assume you know what happened at the club

you dont know why there was unrest there just because the papers said it was because they werent getting played

lampard past it for 2 years ?? you sure your a chelsea fan who watches football or do you just claim to be a chelsea fan at social events

curt

Agree0 Disagree4

I agree avb was thrown under the bus. The players didn't play for him although some of that goes on him. Also the execs brought him in to overhaul the team and were very vocal about such. Obviously the players weren't gonna be happy about this which lead to poor performance. With all that said I think he's a smart manager when it comes to the game but man management isn't one of his strong suits. Interestingly enough that was where redknapp excelled so it will be interesting to see how things are this year.

Tk

Agree2 Disagree0

Interesting article in the evening standard today about this, basically summarised by saying AVB tried to do a 3 year plan in 3 months at Chelsea, would have to agree. I liked AVB and was gutted when he left, I believe he had the potential to do great things, but in the end he made a rod for his own back. To simply state that the players ruined the season for not wanting to play for him is somewhat simplifying the issue, and completely ignores everything that he may have done.

Just a hypothetical (word of the day) question ..... if AVB, or any other manager for that matter, came into Newcastle a few years back and immediately stuck Shearer on the bench, or told him to go train with the youth team because he didn't fit into his plans for the future and rebuilding a young squad, how would the Toon fans and players react ?

PieZ {Ed001's Note - you mean like when Gullit tried to bench him and got his marching orders swiftly after?}

Agree0 Disagree0

Actually curt m8, im a life long fan & watch evergame tv, online & about 9 times at the bridge a season. i believe lampard should had been moved on from when we won the double with ancellotti. BLUEBOY1 {Ed002's Note - You guys all need to play well.}

Agree0 Disagree0

If you've watched him then you'd realise he has something to offer Chelsea?

Can't just kick a legend out because he's 34

May i point you in the direction of Giggs and Scholes? tool

Agree0 Disagree0

BLUEBOY1 really? Its quite easy to say now but don't forget Lamps scored a whopping 22 goals that season in the EPL, and you say the club should have moved him on the next season? Wow, How quickly people forget. Well that said, considering the long thread I would make this short.
PieZ I have to say I agree with you. AVB made a lot of mistakes , don't get me wrong I feel some of the players should have played for us fans but with AVB making statements like he doesn't need the players as long as Roman is on his side he's okay. Come on you can't blame the guys for being mad. As I said in the first post AVB was young , na茂ve and as someone said he lacked the experience to handle the "old guard". Again pieZ spot on with the shearer example you gave, Can't say I would have said it any better. Again I have nothing against AVB and I wish him luck not just in spurs :).

ELI

Agree0 Disagree0

In that case blueboy drogba was past it and should of been sold before the start of last season ................

NO if it wasnt for the old guard plus rami and mata we would of won h**k all last year

curt

Agree0 Disagree2

Curt ,your replys basically state chelsea were a very poor team last season with their defensive play ,because they couldnt compete ,thats how its coming across.......

Agree2 Disagree1

Ur reading something completely different then ... i never once said we cudnt defend i said if it wasnt for the old guard we wouldnt of won anything

terry, cole, cech, lamps and drogba now correct me if im wrong but 3 of those are defenders

i suggest you read before replying

curt

Oh and no we couldnt compete against barca or bayern a blind man could of seen that

Agree3 Disagree0

I have never known anyone on here to totally contradict themselves as much as you curt......

Agree3 Disagree1

Chelsea were a very poor team last season ........ until the later stages when the old guard perked up and won us some trophies

difference between me and alot of you i can accept our team was shocking last year

true supporter will stick by there team good or bad and not lie to themselves making out there whole season was better than it was

I can now be glad a Spurs supporter, granted the appointment of AVB as manager. He sure has a chance to prove Cheski and their cohorts wrong. Let the hostilities continue!

Believable2 Unbelievable4

When you lose Modric and he can't handle the dressing room we'll still be laughing

Agree5 Disagree1

He wont prove CHELSEA** wrong

curt

Agree4 Disagree7

I think the fact we went on to lift the Fa cup and Champions league has already more than proved Chelsea right. AVB will definately have a easier job at Spurs though. The Chelsea squad was full of winners, Spurs squad has no winners except probably Gallas. The players at Spurs therefore maybe will be willing to listen to his ideas. However the guys people skills and personality can only be likened to a cabbage
Chelsea Mole

Agree3 Disagree0

Prove chelsea wrong? He nierly destroyed us we got rid of him n won the double! Good luck in the europa league next year avb can thank rdm for that!
Carefree

Agree4 Disagree0

I think avb has a chance to do well, he is inheriting a good young attacking team with money to add to it, i don't know if he'll be able to make them a solid defensive unit though, it doesn't really seem his style.

The Micon rumour is puzzling ,the guy is on the his way down and he has not been performing the last two seasons. He makes good forward runs but defensively he is a bit suspect .Personally I do not think we will sign him.If we are going to invest lets invest in Ceasar ;Debuchy is also not bad and will be key to bringing in Kane in two or three years time.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

Ed, is it true we have bid for inter's Maicon and if that happens, will we still go after Azpilicuta?
Dastanj

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Forget all this talk of signing 2 rightbacks, it will only be Maicon. Rightback position rotated between Maicon and Ivanovic ( but he doesnt like to play there i hear you all cry) Ivan is a top proffessional he will get on with his job. Ferraira will see out his contract and probably be offered a coaching role by the club. Hutchinson might get games but his knee is still a problem. Todd Kane still lightyears from being good enough and will need to go out on loan at some stage. Ryan Bertrand has been on loan at several Championship sides learning his trade, a similar path could be planned for Todd Kane or Billy Clifford
