Former Real Madrid president Florentino Perez once described what Makelele did, but obviously had no clue about the role's necessity and effectiveness in what was a fantastic Real Madrid team. In reality, it's because of Makelele that the likes of Zidane, McManaman, and Raul could attack with freedom.
He infamously ranted, "We will not miss Makelele. His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and ninety percent of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways. He wasn't a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makelele to be forgotten." Was he really talking about Makelele or Mikel?

What are you trying to point out?
Agree2

His point is obvious, Mikel is bad and Makelele is good.
Agree0
Disagree0
I think he's trying to compare Mikel to Makelele. From reading what Perez said about Makelele, one could mistake him for talking about Mikel. Therefore indicating that Mikel can't be as bad as most people portray him as if he could be compared to Makelele.
Agree0
Disagree0
That florentino Perez is completely clueless, although I'm not sure what relevance that has here!
Agree0
Disagree0
To me it's a pointless statement either comparing or trying to say he's not that bad. Mikel will never be on the same wave length as Claude was. Did anyone not notice how protected our defence was against any team. Our defence are never protected with Mikel in front. Mikel and Makellele both pass the ball side to side but claude never held onto the ball for so long the other teams out outfield players all get back to defend. When do you ever see Mikel make a breathtaking last ditch tackle, or Mikel read the game so well that the other team run out of ideas. Even shakier said Mikel was the weak point so they exploited it. And they did. When would you ever see Makellele lose possession in stupid areas to concede a goal. This makes me angry a post like this. I've always said when Mikel and Claude get compared is the day I'd go mad. Unbelievable. Mikel shouldn't get a new contract let alone play ahead of Romeu. People say he played well for making a few blocks and forward pass. Essien use to do this but then get slated for being to old. At least he would score a few goals. Mikel should be at a team like spurs or inter or Napoli. Not a top European club. BLUEBOY1

Regarding McEachran, is it likely he'll ever break into the 1st team? As much as I love the guy, to me he just has to much against him in terms of the players we brought in. And in terms of Romeu is there some sort of clause that means we pay extra once he reaches a certain number of appearances? In my opinion, he should be getting a lot more games than he currently gets.

He really should, everyone can clearly see he add something Mikel cant and should be first choise, everyone but RDM.

Josh just needs to attack abit more and score a few. ATM he is just like modric sits back plays the ball around. Romeu is a starter for me aswell. We need a hard tackler and he is one. Not only that but his passing is better, and their is more chance of him scoring aswell. BLUEBOY1
Agree1

More chance? more like a billion zillion more chance for him to score. i hope soon they wil give Mikel a chance from the penalty spot, in a match where we can aford to miss cause this amazingly "bad record" in a team like Chelsea wtf. It is really bad for him

As much as I'd love Azpilicueta to get a start mate, it is far fetched to think it will come against United. A lot is riding on this game and I doubt RDM will try anything out of the ordinary.

Rami Mikel

Torres
I wouldn't expect to see anything new.

It seems as if Chelsea have changed half their team to accomodate Torres, this doesn't really play to Lukaku's strengths, does Lukaku have a future at the famous CFC?
Cheers

Mate we have bought players that have lifted the ability of our attacks. Oscar and Hazard were hardly bought to accommodate Torres. Torres has changed his style to accommodate our players. I understand his game was already transitioning as he is no longer the striker he was, but we do not play a style to suit a single player.
If you think Torres doesn't work in the system just have a look at his goals, but far more important assist ratio. He is one of the only strikers in the prem that enjoys setting up a goal more then scoring one. Yes he is far too often caught in position where a shoot is not a viable option, but as long as he is setting them up, he is doing perfectly well.
It bemuses me that 12 months ago, every fan was behind him when he wasn't preforming, but now he contributes fans want another option. If there is anyone who is the polar opposite of Torres if is sturridge, so we are well capable of offering a different kind of forward.
If Lukaku wants to become a starter, he will also need to adapt his game.

Why is it a must to sell Torres if Falcao comes? With Cole,Lampard and Terry all facing the exit door soon and the 3-4-3 formation becoming more popular again i was thinking what about this:
---------Cech---------
-Ivanovic-Cahill-Luiz
---------Mikel--Oscar---
Ramires--------------Hazard
-------------Mata------------
-------Falcao---Torres-------
*Youve got you're athletic players wide of the pitch (Hazard and Ramires)
*Youve got you're two most creative players in the middle of the field with the ball winner Mikel moving around and just playing simple passes to them(Oscar and mata)
*Youve got a hard working striker thats excellent on the ball along with the top no.9 in europe what better combinations are there?
*Youve got 3 mobile cb's with Luiz and Ivanovic on the right and left who both have experience in the rb and lb positions and can move in easily
*My last statement is that a 3 man defence is originally italian and what nation is our manager from?
Think about it and comment guys?

Ramires our best central player so it doesn't make sense to me to start playing him wide again. But essentially playing a 4231 we still sort of play a 343 basically our best attacking wing back attacks COLE, and ivanovic stays back with Cahill, luiz. Only when attacking cole moves along side the two defenceive midfielder say ramires Romeu, with cole when attacking joining these two. Also Oscar drops quite deep leaving a front 3 of mata hazard Torres.
When we attack we line up like this.
Cech
Ivan Cahill luiz
Oscar ramires Romeu cole
Mata Torres hazard
But as soon as possession is lost just simply drop back to
Cech
Ivan luiz Cahill cole
Ramires Romeu
Oscar
Mata Torres hazard

That is very wrong what u posted on when we attack.
when we attack:
--------------Cech-------
-----------Cahill-Luiz----
-------Ramires---Mikel-------
Iva.----------Oscar----------Cole
------Mata--Torres--Hazard-----
*Cole and iva provide the width with oscar in behind the front 3 of torres, hazard and mata who the rotate in a free form.
*this the allows us to play with a narrow "back 4"of cahill and luis who will sit back and provide cover and Mikel and Ramires who will press the ball up field and win possession back as soon as we loose it while cole and iva track back to defend the oppositions wide players.
*When we push for goals Ramires will then move in alongside Oscar who will then also advance at times and Hazard and mata will then rotate into the middle at times and we will the have the back 3 of cahill luis and mikel playing as a stopper in front of them.
*Torres likes to drop deep into the pocket and collect the ball in midfield then u will see hazard and mata advance beyond him at times.
THIS IS FROM THE ORIGINAL POST I SET UP THE FORMATION FOR WHEN FALCAO JOINS AND TORRES STAYS THAT TORRES DOESNT SIT ON THE BENCH AGAIN IT ISNT THE FORMATION I RECOMMENDED WE PLAY!

What I was saying is what we could do to still sort of play a 3 4 3 even though starting a 4231. I know how we play. Just saying. BLUEBOY1

If we played with 3 at the back with no wing backs we would leave so much room for wingers to attack us.
Blue Con

We won't because with that formation we will defend double as soon as we loose possession and the with of the team will be much wider.

Do you love Torres too much to see that its obvious that if Falcao gets bought he is done?

I don't love Torres but the owner does and i doubt that he will be looking to sell him!I think even RDM would rather want him to leave but the owner is obsessed with Fernando

Lol have you no idea what Oscar does for the team? he is playing FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR better than Hazard is atm.
Agree0

1.Oscar and Hazard aren't similar even though they have similar roles in attack.
2.How many games did he play in a season while playing in Brazil and how far did he travel?taking in consideration he only recently started breaking into the national team.He has had a lot of football lately and travelled a lot and puts in a lot for the team he's tiring physically and mentally.
3.Hazard's movement in behind defenders is better than Oscar's and thats what we need in tomorrows game.
4.Doesnt matter how good the player is when he is tired whats the use?
There are your 4 perfect good reasons to support my statement.

Next season I hope our team looks like this
Goal Keepers
Cech, Courtois, Blackman and Turnbull
Defence
Iva, Dave(lol), JT, Luiz, Cahill, Cole and
Bertrand and possibly another CB(someone young but just as good as JT).
Defensive Mid
Mikel, Romeu, Rami, Josh(being our creative spark at the back).
"Front 3"
Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Marin, Piazon, Moses and another addition.
Strikers
Torres, Sturridge, Lukaku and a another addition(Falcao).
The whole point is to have at least have 2 similar players in each position so that when 1 is injured or being rotated our style of play doesn't change dramatically.

Yeah I spose his injury record ain't great. That's true ed, maybe someone like schurrle. Its weird for us Chelsea fans not trusting our strikers. We've been spoilt over the last 6 to 7 years. BLUEBOY1 {Ed018's Note - if Torres and Sturridge were to be sold and i'm saying if, then Falcao and Schurrle would be perfect replacements. Falcao is a must though, he is the best number 9 in the world and he would adapt to the premier league the minute he sets foot on the pitch. He is easily one of my favorite players to watch right now and would love to see him at Chelsea.}
Agree1

Yeah deffo ed. falcao is unbelievable. Mr abromovic won't put up with Torres not being brilliant and sturridge is out of contract. I expect Milan would still want 30 million for pato aswell. Maybe remy aswell, he could be another option.

I hate the fact that JT is out for a couple of weeks but its a blessing in disguise because Cahill and Luiz will get some game time together.
On our two holding midfielders:
The way I see it if we play Rami and Mikel one should work primarily with the defence (Mikel defending in front of them) and one should work with the forwards (Rami defending behind them), obviously both should be helping cut balls out etc.
What we need to work on:
The "spaces" between Cahill and Luiz. The space left behind Iva when he goes forward, Oscar does a great job in tracking back when Iva goes forward but I think Rami should slide back in that position and Oscar slides back in Rami's position so that we still keep our shape because if Iva loses the ball Rami will be in the RB position to win the ball back, if rami wins back the ball he can pass to Oscar and we can start a new attack, if he doesn't but manges to stall the other team Iva has enough time to recover and slot back into defence.

I have read three reports this week showing Mikel is our weak link, one fom shakhter player fernidinho. One from journalised(comparing Mikel with other defencive midfielders.) and one from giggs. I just can't stand the way he plays. And even professionals see this.
