The one thing we have been worried about all season is if Matic got injured or suspended. It has now happened at the same time as Man city are at full force. City missed yaya but are now only five points behind, we need to get something out of the West Ham and Southampton game, without matic.

I've said this all year personally I'd give Ake his chance now he deserves it.

Can't win them all but again two holding midfield players v burnley at home, I'm sorry but we need another dimension to our team. We have midfield and forward players pressing the opposition most of the games but the defence always sits deep, leaving space behind midfield for players to run at defence. If you watch the games again on TV you will see what I mean. We play two holding players but yet other teams still produce a lot of attempts on our goal. Give burnley credit though they deserved their point but we had too many players just not up for today's game.

Did we play two holding midfield players today?

Agree0 Disagree0

Wouldn't call Fabregas a holding player, mate.

I think cesc tends to play deeper as most teams overload right around the box and him going in there would just add to the congestion. We had some awful refereeing and couldn't capitalize enough on the chances that did come our way.

It has nothing to do with the personnel of the team, it is the tempo at which we play. How many times do we get the edge of the opposition box and then pass it around at walking pace for 30 seconds? Burnley played well and put 100% effort in like they always do and they deserve some credit for forcing an equaliser but the referee handed them the point and I was surprised he didn't give their penalty appeal to seal an unbelievably horrific refereeing display. Matic deserved his red card for his reaction but how the referee didn't even give a free kick for that challenge let alone a straight red card is beyond me. If I performed like that at work I would be sacked, so why isn't he? :D

Agree0 Disagree0

If you ignore all the poor refereeing decisions, I suppose Burnley maybe deserved a point but even then I wouldn't really say so. We created half a dozen opportunities in the second half where we were only an inch or two away from scoring.
Fabregas isn't really a holding midfielder, in fact the only time I see him deep is when he comes to collect the ball or when we're defending around our box.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry but I disagree with Burnley deserving a point, if the ref had not bottled the first three decisions the game would have been over in the 1st half, it could have been three nil and their spirit broken . I don't care if the ref apologises for his bad decisions, it doesn't matter, 2 points dropped City catching up and one of our best players banned for 3 games all because a ref continually totally bottled game changing decisions.
apologies for the rant but it is getting beyond a joke when we are constantly not being awarded penalties. All conspirty jokes aside, but the players must be getting affected by this

Is this like 10th penalty in a row which we didn't get?

Agree0 Disagree0

As someone in the mail wrote, if this had happened in Asia then there would be mention of corruption/match fixing as opposed to in this case, an incompetent display by the red.

Would anyone else play Ake vs TOTTENHAM? If Mikel is injured Ramires and Fabregas as the holding two doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. I'd personally go with Ramires and Ake holding to give us solidity in the centre and move Fabregas to no.10. Then I'd play Willian and Hazard either side with Diego up front. And one other thing ZOUMA needs to start I can't bear seeing Harry Kane tear us a new one again. Especially against Cahill.

Fabregas is not a number 10. He is more effective playing deeper. Willian was badly missed Today and must start as 10 with Cuadrado right and Hazard left. Rami and Fab deeper. You are right about Zouma.

Agree0 Disagree0

Posted the exact same thing. With just Ramires and Fabregas in central midfield they'd probably run all over us. Can't let that happen twice in one season. Either Ake or (less ideal option) Loftus-Cheek should play.

Agree0 Disagree0

I can see something a bit leftfield being deployed on the Cup Final. perhaps Azpilicueta playing a holding role (like Lahm does for Bayern). Stranger things have happened!

Agree0 Disagree0

Think we should start with Ake and Ramires or go with a 4-3-3. Rami, Ake and Fab in the centre with Hazard and Cuadrado/Willian on the wings.

Agree0 Disagree0

Steve.B I think you may be right - I can see Jose putting Azpi or even Ivan in the holding role.

Agree0 Disagree0

Can't remember which game it was but JM subbed Cahill on and I think either him or Zouma then went into DM position. Might happen again?

Couple of points.
First off, we can blame the ref all we like (and yes, he was awful today), but we should've scored at least 1 or 2 more. Some very good crosses were put in yet nobody was on hand to guide them home. I feel we had the chances to finish them off, but we just didn't do it.
Though it has to be said, the referee was awful. 100% crystal clear penalty ignored by the ref and some pretty bad aerial duels involving Barnes also ignored.
The Matic red was justified and yes his reaction wasn't particularly smart, but I don't hold it against him. His leg was close to being in 2 parts and I fully understand his reaction. And to be fair, his reaction wasn't even that bad. Just a push, not to the head area. Does anyone think he could be suspended for only 1 game instead 3 given the circumstances.
It'll be interesting to see what Jose does against Spurs regarding the midfield. Ramires and Fabregas as a pairing doesn't fill me with confidence. And Mikel is injured if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully we'll see Ake in there as well to add more security. He's been good whenever he's called upon. We should trust him.

Bloody bad day at the office, let's move on. I want revenge against Tottenham!

Not the first time this season we've had trouble killing off a match, and that's a bit worrying.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm pretty sure if we were given the two penalties we deserved plus Barnes being sent off along with matic then the game would of been killed off in the first half but we were robbed in every sense today

I know we should have had 2 pens, and they should have had a player sent off, but even with poor decisions we should still be beating burnley at home in a title race, score 3 goals at home against a team that will probably get relegated at home and would of should of pens, I never use excuses when we lose/draw I always blame ourselves maybe harsh but if we can't beat burnley at home without a penalty when where going for the league then players and manager should look at there selfs before blaming refs, or other teams, you can't rely on anybody but yourself!!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Burnley weren't playing 90 minutes against one of the best teams in Europe in midweek, the ref cost us the win today it's not an excuse mate it's true & I'd say the same if it happened to any other team it was horrendous, Barnes should be receiving a ban! Matic got up & give the bloke a little push & Barnes made the most of it to take the spotlight off he's challenge! Does this mean matic misses the cup final?

Agree0 Disagree0

Yup, he misses the next or next 3 matches sadly.

Agree0 Disagree0

Both Arsenal and City received penalties which set the tempo for both their games. Maybe they would have won without them, we'll never know. We were slightly sluggish, but the decisions went against us today, and the result shows that.

Agree0 Disagree0

First game of the season we should have had a pen and they should have had a play sent off, difference is we scored 3 then, if we scored 3 yesterday without relying on refs, linesman, 4th officials or anyone but ourself, yes we should have had 2 pens and they should have been down to 10 men but we were pretty awful and didn't deserve to win, it was the first game this year I've been to :(

Agree0 Disagree0

Burnley drew at both Manc clubs so it's silly to say we should be scoring loads against them and beating them easily.

Agree0 Disagree0

Spot on Canton. Spot on.

How did Ashley Barnes walk off that pitch without even a booking! He took out Ivan and Zouma with dangerous tackles while they were in the air in the 1st half and his 'tackle' on Matic had to be a straight red.
Having said that, we didn't play well enough to win - created very little - few shots on target.
Time for Mikel to be a hero!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I suspect Barnes will get charged on Monday or Tuesday.}

Mourinho said in yesterdays press conference that Mikel is out for a minimum of two weeks.

Agree0 Disagree0

Brilliant - surely Jose has to play Ake then

It's becoming a joke. 2 definitely penalties today. But I got to say and question why we're playing such sluggish football, terrible movement off the ball. What's happened to the quick high tempo football!!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Its actually funny how Barnes managed to avoid a yellow card and his team left the bridge with a point, Burnley were awful

One of the poorest referee displays i've ever seen. We should have had 2 pens in the first half and the game well wrapped up. He also failed to award fouls against Barnes, which imo led to the Matic red card. If he gives the foul, then I don't think Matic reacts in the same way. Matic's reaction though was too much.

Absolutely unreal. I hope jose throws his toys out the pram and doesn't say a word for the rest of the year. The refereeing has be appalling all year and it's about damn time the league takes responsibility.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - What has it got to do with the league?}

The red card must be appealed and rescinded. The refereeing performance smacked of Clattenburg and Ovrebo.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It was a deserved red card - it won't be rescinded.}

21 Feb 2015 17:20:00
Maybe take responsibility wouldn't be the phrase but refereeing has altered results consistently throughout the year and it's time that trend stops.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't care what the luddites say, it is time for video technology to be used during games for all major decisions.

I'm sorry but when are referees going to realise chelsea are allowed penalties aswell?! First a handball and then a push haha! Well isn't filipe luis having a stormer

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Also what is Ashley Barnes doing? Seems intent to jump in with his knee when he tries to win a header

Agree0 Disagree0

Absolutely appalling refereeing.

Luis - world class in 1st half. Fabregas well below par.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed018's Note - Luis had some great tackles}

And still doing it in the 2nd as well :)

Now another group of chelsea fans are being looked for for making racist chant after returning from the PSG game at a London train station. What's the problem with these few that's soiling the clubs image big time?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

They aren't Chelsea fans they are cowards & thugs! Couldn't care less about that anymore, time to concentrate on getting 3 points today
