So happy with the performance and some of the players played outstanding;
Begovic - average game, wasn't to blame for the goals but did nothing special
Cahill - started out awfully, gave the ball away a few times, was at fault for the first goal but played better in the second half and got a good goal
Azpi - had a solid game, was so much better going forward than at lb and scored a cracker
Luiz - had a terrific game, made no mistakes quality passing display but often mistimes when the ball will land misses it
Alonso - was really impressed with his performance today played very well
Matic - I though he actually had a very good game. He defended brilliantly and created chances going forward which he doesn't normally do
Fabregas - outstanding performance, 2 nice finishes to win us the game definately deserves more starts
Pedro - looked sharp, created good chances but messed around with the ball too much
Moses - amazing night performance, really showing what he can do now! Needs more game time to prove himself
RLC - didn't see much of him, rarely got the ball but played alright
Batshauyi - looked very sharp and ball control was excellent just needs to stay onside more
Chalobah - ran the midfield excellently. Not one mistake but slowed down the attack quite a bit!
Hazard - we know what he can do and when he came on he showed us! Terrific performance, great running on and off the ball but needs to learn when to shoot the bloody ball!
Costa - vary good game, came on sub and created more chances than anyone! Should have scored at least 1.

I am sure there will be an over reaction to last night's performance but rather than dwell on the glaring errors I thought Azi and Alonso looked an accomplished pair at full back and cannot see any reason why Ivanovic will be back. As pointed out Luiz's passing forward was excellent but he is a dreadful defender and I do not see him as a back four player. Chaloabah looks a confident player BUT he does have a habit of playing the ball sideways too often slowing us down but must get more game time. Likewise, much maligned but Moses showed something that we should persist with, not greedy and quick but has a dreadful shot. Biggest disappointment was RLC. He looked lost and does not look like a man making any progress. We looked fitter than last year and showed a resilience that was woefully missing but that defence needs to be sorted out quickly or passing teams will cut us to ribbons.

I disagree with much of the original post. Thought there weren't many outstanding individual performances. Cesc, Costa, Azpi and Moses were very good. Pedro was bright but the quality just isn't there. Thought Begovic was terrible, making me even more concerned about these Courtois quotes. Alonso had a solid debut, would like to see him in the team now although I wouldn't throw him straight into Arsenal away. David Luiz still has a mistake in him, though he's a very good player in my opinion. Hazard was ok when he came on, nothing special though. Same for Chalobah and Batshuayi. RLC was disappointing, though I feel he's being played out of position. I struggle to see what Matic offers these days. Last but not least, Gary Cahill. I feel the less said about him the better- when is Zouma back?

What a goal by Dave on his natural side, and he sprayed a few good passes aswell, should have had an assist to Costa.

Regardless of the result or some perceived errors I think Luiz passing display has been outstanding! They'd be signing the plaudits if it was Bonucci, should have 3 assists!
I think in a back 3 he would shine, love his passion and aggression.

Hes a brilliant passer don't get me wrong but we bought him as a defender and its that side that let's him down that's why psg were ok to let him go because in marquinhos they have an all round better player.

The thing is that luiz still haven't done any nig mistake. Most goals we conceded this season are because of cahill and ivanovic.

Hopefully we get to see a back four of Azpilicueta, Zouma, Luiz and Alonso once everyone's fit.

Article on SS about Kante and his new role for us. There's a graphic which shows his touch map, and it highlights that Kante ends up having to cover the right side of the pitch a lot more than the left. Almost 4x the amount of the time he has to cover the LB position.

We are unbelievably bad at defending its school boy stuff roll on January hopefully conte shows a few of them the door simply not good enough I'd understand if it was the youths making the mistakes but its not like to see chalobah second hapf he deserves a good run out.

We have got to hangs the squad and use some youth today! It's our chance to test players out before we go to far into the season with an eleven that aren't consistent
Here's my team;
Begovic as he deserves game time,
Aina has to start, hopefully now conte has finally seen how bad Ivanovic is and drops him, and maybe sub off for Azpi at rb! Luiz and Terry, I know they don't work well together but we brought Luiz for a reason, and that is too play. And from cahills performance against Liverpool he should be dropped too. Alonso at left back, give him a chance.
Chalobah, I would be happy with RLC but Chalobah deserves a chance to show what he can do! If conte uses a youth cm he will probably start RLC but Chalobah could be just as good or even better if he gets the chance. Fabregas needs to start as well and Kante because we need a midfielder who can defend as Chalobah and fab can't do that! Hazard to start, because although it's only a cup match, it's still against the title holders and they are a good team who will probably play most of their key players so we need some quality on the pitch. Pedro, he needs another chance to impress. Batshauyi has to start upfront, Costa is the top goal scorer in the BPL but this is a cup match and of Bathsauyi is going to get a chance this is where he'll get it.

Whilst I agree that we should keep Kante in the team for tonight, Chalobah most certainly can defend!

I could very well be in the minority with this opinion but I thought we had a great summer of transfer business; it just was unattractive along the way. For starters it was huge that we were able to retain our biggest players despite no champions league football. Kante might be the best purchase of any of the teams in England. Batshuayi has a ton of potential and is already producing which is great especially considering his price tag compared to similar players at his position. Eduardo seems capable of being our third keeper. While Alonso isn't a sexy name and does come with a sizable price tag, there was hardly anyone available at that position and if it means moving Dave back to RB i'm all for it. I've already given my two cents on why I think Luiz is a great fit for our needs. The reason I feel the club is getting ripped for the summer is how things looked from the outside. Naingolan and Koulibaly dragged on and were always going to be impossible targets with pjanic and Higuain leaving their respective teams. This wasn't helped by Napoli (and their owner) taking the Mickey by continually changing the asking price as well as taking everything public. Again I feel the results were great; the road to get there was ugly though.

I'm with you, I'm happy with what we kept and bought. Sure their is room for improvement a few ins and outs.
Personally so far this season with what I see is the wrong players starting games. Or maybe conte is waiting to change is formation. I want to see us play this high pressing football.

20 Sep 2016 15:22:11
To play high pressing football you need the players and we just not do not have a strong enough team.

Agree0 Disagree2

20 Sep 2016 16:39:24
I'm not sure a high press will be feasible until Terry is out of the team and I don't believe that's a possibility until Zouma returns.

Watched the first goal we conceded back and whilst quite a few players lost their man, I think the goal should probably rest on Cahill's shoulders (and Ivanovic for the pointless freekick) There is quite clearly a moment when Cahill can see himself surrounded by 5 red shirts with no one else around, and instead of sticking with them decides to rush towards the rest of our players.
It's quite possible that Lovren would have still gotten on the end of it, but Cahills presence might have at least put him off.

If it comes down to it today who would you rather see start out of Loftus-Cheek or Chalobah?

Personally I think Chalobah finally deserves his chance to show us what he can do. Loftus-Cheek is my favourite and I do think he'll turn out to be a a better player, but he needs to grab the game by the scruff of the next and use his physicality to boss the midfield. I don't like this half hearted attempt to slowly come back into your own half to defend. Ruben has all the talent in the world but he needs to work harder.

I think Nate deserves the game more as he hasn't started one yet and with fabregas in the lineup I think he would better complement our lineup. That said I think Ruben will start.
