Pretty pointless naming Costa in our premier league squad in my opinion. Would you even trust him on the pitch after all that's happened this summer? Because I certainly wouldn't.

If he was professional and returned to training when he was supposed to, then sure maybe there could have been a way back. But there's just been way too much water under the bridge and we're better off without Diego's unsettling influence now.

I'll always be greatful to what Costa has done for us, but we're better off without him now.

Thanks for the memories Diego, but now it's Morata's time!

Yeah as much as I'd love a Morata, Costa and Hazard frontline in a 3-4-1-2 i simply can't see it happening after what's happened this summer. No doubt We'd have one of the deadliest attacks in Europe as well. Imagine trying to get Costa to play for us againt Athletico in the champions league. he'd likely refuse. Conte and Costa both have too strong of a character just to push aside their issues, it'll definitely affect the team imo.

Agree1 Disagree1

02 Sep 2017 09:06:24
If his not in the squad he won't get fit and won't train with u21's so by naming him he has to turn up and train which means he will be fit for sale, it's club holding power over him tmrather than him acting like a clown in Brazil, don't see why he should play as will only damage the main striker who will be staying ( morata )

The Costa saga is all about Chelsea fulfilling its contractual requirements. Nothing more.

CFC have included Costa in the PL squad?
I wouldn't be surprised if he came back to be honest. If he did then what a front line we would have.

01 Sep 2017 21:23:11
I doubt it'll happen, they probably just included him in case both Michy and Morata for some reason are unavailable.

Negative. Costa should and will return . he will honour his contract he is a gentleman and winner . that's west winners do . why do you think conte was laughing when the media asked about him . it's just another funny business.

Agree0 Disagree9

02 Sep 2017 13:58:31
Surely he's in the squad for legal butt-covering by the club? That way if he refuses to train and keep fit we can say that he was named in the squad and should have been in training. Also negating his lawyers earlier claims of constructive dismissal if we name him in the PL squad, and it's not like we don't have the available space in the roster to do so.

Hi all, long time reader of the site. Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in now the window has closed and after initial disappointment, I've taken stock of the squad.

GK; Swapped a premier league experienced keeper with another and kept Courtois, still very strong here.

DEF: Lost Terry, Ake and sent Zouma on loan (who is looking really strong), replaced them with Rudiger and Christensen both of which have looked more than capable and I would say upgrades on top of what was an already strong core of Dave, Luiz and Cahill.

WB: Added Zappacosta to compete with Moses, Alonso is just getting better so that can only be a plus. Have Kennedy and possibly Baba (who I think will be excellent WB) as well Pedro and Willian if required. Could have done with another player here but all in all solid.

MID: Lost Matic and Chalobah, added Bakayoko and Drinkwater, both of which could be argued as upgrades on who they're replacing, although time will tell. Combine this with IMO the best out and out centre midfielder in the EPL Kante and the best passer in the league Fab and we are looking pretty good.

ATT: Losing Costa and have added Morata who at this stage is still finding his feet but has all the indications that he will be a worthy replacement plus he's a better fit for the team and younger. Batshuayi as depth has flattered to deceive but with get more chances. The 4 of Hazard, Pedro, Willian and Musonda are up there with the best in the league.

Combine this with the fact that most of our rivals all missed out on their own key targets; City: Sanchez, United: Perisic, Liverpool: Van Dijk, Arsenal: Lemar and Spurs at Wembley.

Throw in the Conte factor and I'm quietly optimistic with how the season will play out!

Thoughts?

Very good post Ngolos. Every point has been well thought through and positive.
The Baba point is very interesting and I like you believe Conte can make him into a first class wing back.
Just depends if he can get match fit before the next transfer window.
If he can prove himself to Conte it could save the club a lot of money!

01 Sep 2017 20:48:26
Yes, everything is shiny. Lukaku went to United, Llorente went to Spurs, Ox went to
Liverpool, Barkley said he wanted to talk to Spurs, several others snubbed you. You can kid yourselves all you want but something is not right at Chelsea right now. You have replaced layers that left, some may be better, some may not be, I think you'll finish 3rd and Conte's head will explode some time in March.

Well to be fair, it's no secret Lukaku wanted the Chelsea move, but we weren't interested. Llorente wanted to work with Conte again, but our bid wasn't accepted by Swansea so he went to Spurs. Don't believe everything the media tells you.

Alright AJH,
Bless you mate, we've all been there with Jose tinted specs on. We all know MUFC will improve on 6th from last season, although do you have back up for that dynamic midfield?
CFC however will struggle to improve on last season in the prem as we were champions! Regarding the extra 8 games we will have to play in the champions league compared to last year. well to be fair, if injuries are kept to a minimum. I think we will manage ok.
I personally think we will finish above you in the league.

Why your obseession with cfc transfers
Lukaku no bid from chelsea he's a cfc fan tho lol
Llorente no bid from chelsea he's 34 cfc don't sign players over 30 no sell on value herm herm ibra
Ox wanted to play for boyhood club
Now do you want to talk about the players you were linked to by fake media bale didn't james rodriguez didn't happen perisic didn't happen aurier didn't happen morata didn't happen neymar guess what didn't happen even ronaldo was coming back guess what didn't happen
Deadline day you were even linked to sanchez you never guess what happened it didn't happen now

Window over and mr negatives assessment is club failed to show some grit and aggression in getting our targets, that said, morata so far has impressed me and isn't 100% adjusted to conte, rudiger had done better than I thought although although does look nervous at times, bakyoko in glimpses I can see exactly why his matic replacment, drinkwater I honestly think can be ahead of cesc, short passing. It as good but long passing both feet one of best in league, zappcosta read good things and ok cover, so we go on COME ON CHELSEA.

Believable4 Unbelievable9

01 Sep 2017 12:43:56
I like the club's business, my complain all summer has been:
-don't linger so much on targets eg Alex Sandro- there are other good players.
-Buy Belotti but its ok cos we can try our luck for him next season.
-Get a high profile signing like Ousmane Dembele etc cos we are just at that point where a high profile signing will help us conquer Europe again.

BUT OUR TRANSFER BUSINESS IS OK, WELL DONE TO THE CLUB. WE WILL DO BETTER NEXT SEASON.

Agree1 Disagree11

01 Sep 2017 10:57:48
I think we have 7/ 8 players who will bust a gut to get into the first team which is a positive. But Bakayoko aside, the starting eleven hasn't improved, so I can't see us being a force in Europe. Conte should be able to keep a smallish squad happy, but we are still 2/ 3 players short. We needed two additional world class wing backs due to the impossible shift that Moses and Alonso will be asked to put in (Kenedy should have gone) . And Llorente would have been an experienced aerial threat as cover for Morata (the Bat isn't good enough) . To retain the Prem the defence will have to play out of its skin, Bakayoko will need to be player of the year, Hazard has to be even better and Morata has to be every bit as good as Costa. I think we'll do well to come in third and Conte will go at the end of the season. Conte will want a crack at PSG or similar if we can't spend huge to attract the elite. And we all know that we are not at that level.

01 Sep 2017 13:27:44
Barcley is a complete numpty!
He will never play for Everton again. The fans and club will never forgive him for costing the club £35mil.
He will have to play football for someone if he wants to get into England's World Cup squad. So I hope Everton make him see out the full term of his contract.
I also want the same thing to happen to Costa but I can't see it happening. What a shame!

Agree8 Disagree0

01 Sep 2017 09:51:30
Not a horrendous window. Bats will get his chance and nearly all other positions strengthened with more depth. Only downside really is no attacking CMs for extra depth there. Willian the only cover in those positions unless Cesc moves up the field if needed. Pretty happy here, re-evaluate in January when we see how things are going.

Musonda is going to have to step up and be trusted.

Agree6 Disagree0

01 Sep 2017 09:49:38
The squad has a nice balance about it, well covered in defence with 5 centre backs and Rudiger and young Christensen already settling in well, cover and competition at right wing back with Zappacosta who may be a very strewd signing and clearly a Conte player, Baba and Kenedy as back up on the left. 4 central midfieders to cover 2 places and allow rotation to suit the opposition, I expect Cesc to start the games where we need to open teams up and Bako or Drinkwater to start alongside Kante when we play the better clubs. 4 quality inside forwards with Hazard being one of the worlds top players and Pedro and Willian right up there as well and I really like Musunda as a young player too. Morata is starting to settle in well and gives us ariel strength which we have missed since the Drog left and I think Batsy has promise but he is possibly the only one I have a slight doubt about. Add in one of the worlds top keepers and experienced back up and I think we look ready to not only cope with 4 competitions but challange as well. Squad age is also lowered and I expect us to bring in 1 or 2 more in January if needed plus some of the hugely talented young players out on loan have the chance to show what they can do in order to be considered next season. Over to you Don Conte to work your magic with a very good, young squad of players.

Common guys. Do we really think a player will pull out of a transfer in the middle of a medical? The media is just pushing this to create traffic. Barkley rejected the club yes but according to a source close to the player the boy never came to Cobham for a medical and he rejected the transfer as he didn't want to go to a new club injured which is why he said he will consider his options when fully fit in january. Chin up guys and be appreciative of not been a gooner.

There are 2 sides of a medal. Our squad is weaker than last season. But our squad got few very talented young players.
The main thing is that Chelsea has if not the best then one of the best coaches in the world. And squad is basically complete.
Manchester clubs, Totenhem, Arsenal and Liverpool all have stronger squads than Chelsea BUT WE HAVE ANTONIO CONTE.! And I wouldn't be surprised if we win the title this season back to back.
My regards to all true Chelsea supporters. Cheers.

Agree3 Disagree3

01 Sep 2017 10:03:55
People and pundits forget how superior Chelsea were last season!
We have added six new players to the squad and while that doesn't increase the squad numbers, I think it adds a bit more quality.

Our closest rivals last year (still miles behind) Spurs have added a bit of depth to their squad but their first team is NO stronger and to reliant on one player. They will be fighting for 4th spot with the scousers.

The scousers have not really strengthened at the back. It's hard to win the prem without a decent goalkeeper but in Robertson they have for £8mil got a decent fullback.

The two Manchester clubs will be fighting for 2nd and 3rd. Jose has created the land of the giants but they were so far behind us last year, I just can't see them closing the huge gap sufficiently. He will therefore get sacked.

PG had to strengthen hi defence and has got in some good fullbacks but no centre backs and if old man Kompany is out they are very vulnerable. PG will also get the tin tack.

PG going is fantastic news for the gooners who will need a new manager as they will finish below Everton and Huddersfield.
I'm not sure why they just don't give us the trophy now! Life would be so much easier but I guess, so boring.
COME ON THE CHAMPIONS of ENGLAND.

i really don't believe Pep will challenge for EPL even with this squad but Jose will and i think it will be a close race this time with us being in the mix provided our key players are fully fit. don't discount klopp and pochettino. They are smart as well.

So what do we think? How would we have felt at the start of the window if we knew this would have been our business? Bakayoko is surely an upgrade on Matic. Morata is a great young striker while Drinkwater brings experience in the middle. I think player by player out team is arguably stronger. But I would not have said it was enough at the start of June.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

01 Sep 2017 05:24:25
I disagree, I th No at best you have stood still. Morata s a great player but will he deliver the goals Costa did? Drinkwater won't get in your team, he'll spend the season sat on the bench. Bakayoko may be an upgrade on Matic, we shall see.

You are Champions so are still one of the favourites for the League but I was surprised that you didn't sign more and better players. It will be interesting to see how Conte reacts.

01 Sep 2017 06:29:44
Both of you should use a dictionary to find out what does word upgrade means.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Sep 2017 06:42:22
I think you've undersold us there AJH, like many people did after last summer's window.
Bakayoko and Drinkwater are certainly better than Matic and Chalobah pound-for-pound. Matic had started well for you, but the acid test will be against the very top midfields when last year he was often found wanting. Morata looks like he'll replace Costa very adequately and not just goals, his movement, and assists mean thus far only striker fitting in that well so far is Firmino. Zappacosta, who squad-wise replaces Ake/ Ivanovic is very underrated, if he was English he'd be going for Walker level cash, and Conte loves him. Christensen and Rudiger have started well and the latter is threatening to take Cahill's space while the former is perfectly capable and his speed and aerial ability is better than John Terry's which was declining last year rapidly- look at how Villa have started for evidence. Caballero as a backup will do, nothing special but okay.
I think one thing people forget is how well Conte can get seemingly average players playing- I've always hated a clamour for marquee signings as they never guarantee instant success, such as Di Maria, Ozil, Torres, Pogba the list goes on etc. I'd have liked a LWB option like Alex Sandro, but I don't buy any of the Conte vs. Board nonsense as all of these signings carry the Conte mark. Only deadline day thing I was annoyed at was losing Llorente to Spurs as he is a very decent target man and would have made a nice 3rd choice. Chamberlain flatters to deceive and his attitude is clearly questionable by his desire to be guaranteed a starting CM spot and Barkley is just a scouse Wilshere, a lot of potential whittled away.
We'll be there or thereabouts because we are Chelsea and even in our most turbulent crisis, we are still a real force to be reckoned with. Sorry for the long response.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Chamberlain did not want to be guaranteed a central midfield berth at all mate. He would like to play there, but he turned Chelsea down purely because he wanted to play for his boyhood club. Nothing more, nothing less. It would be like Terry playing somewhere else and knowing Chelsea were waiting in the wings, he is not going to take another offer elsewhere.}

01 Sep 2017 07:59:29
Cfcforever! I agree completelly. I think we will do just fine. As far as we jeeping the cup i think we stand a chance. Sandro wouldhv been a great addition but I trust Conte.1 or even 2 more woulhv been awesome for depth but who knows what will happen in the next window. Cheers.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Sep 2017 08:04:01
CFC! Do you see Drinkwatr getting any playing time? As for Matic, our issue last year wasn't the big games, it was our inability to beat 'lesser' teams, particularly at OT, our away form was very strong. Matic may or may not be a great player, but in a jigsaw you need a pice that fits and that's what he has given us, you may prefer Bakayoko and he may be a better fit for you,

Conte has been very vocal in the press, unhappy with the sale of Matic, unhappy with the lack of signings. It may all be press spin but Ox preferred Liverpool (his dream club apparently), Barkley pulled out, Llorente went to Spurs, and Lukaku came to United. Yes u may be happy but I don't think your Manager is.

{Ed001's Note - probably not but you can't blame a lad for following his dream. I find it refreshing in this day and age.}

01 Sep 2017 08:39:32
Drinkwater will get chances to impress the manager and I'm pleased he has joined the CHAMPIONS of ENGLAND.
The media a fixated on Matic ( fact, his name was mentioned by the commentators more than any player in our Spurs game) as I understand it he was told he was surplus to requirements at the end of last season and would be allowed to leave. Hence him training away from the first team squad and not going on the preseason tour.
He was average last year and truly poor the year before so getting £40mil for a 29 year old looks good business to me!

Agree1 Disagree2

01 Sep 2017 09:47:37
Yeah I agree Ed001, if that was the case fair play. Can't see him playing much though, certainly not better than Lallana and Can and the system currently suits Wijnaldum and Henderson better as well. As an aside, how thrilled are you at no more Naby Keita, Thomas Lemar or Virgil Van Dijk questions?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he will also cover Mane and Salah so they can get a rest or if one is injured. He should get plenty of gametime really.

If only that were true, all I have done all morning is answer VVD and Lemar questions! Not just the Liverpool site either, as Arsenal are talking about Lemar too.}
