Why does Torres only seem to have any technical ability after he has scored?

Just watch him. After he scores he gains a yard of pace , a good touch, decent close control and the ability to hit a correctly weighted pass.

If we can go on and win the Europa cup we will be the first team hold both the champs league and Europa at the same time! The Europa cup final is 10 days before the champs league final, so we would have 10 days as double euro champs! Not sure if that's impressive or a little bit sad!

Whitewall

Believable5 Unbelievable4

Its hardly sad

When are the draws for the knockout stages? or has it already happended? {Ed018's Note - Thursday}

It's sad because we failed miserably in the champs league.

i find it all very embarrassing, whats the chant next year, "we know what we are champions of the two bob cup"

You shouldn't be too surprised ktbffh, withing the space on a month, people on here have gone from hating rafa, to thinking he is terrific. It's a very fickle thing, football. For some people anyway

As a true Chelsea supporter I will always back any player that plays in blue. I know Torres should be scoring more goals this season but if you compare him to Van Persie he has only scored 2 goals less... Think we need to start getting off his back and hopefully he will start scoring important goals...

Who is this 'person' always comparing Torres with RVP? Van Persie would score 3x more if he played for us. Torres is so wasteful and in very tight games when a chance can make the difference, it comes to hurt u.
BB.

Agree6 Disagree1

I don't think he'll be playing regularly after January. Everytime he gets the ball he either takes a so called first touch that could be more accurately described as a pass to the opposition.... Or on the occasions when he does control the ball it's 50/50 as to whether he can complete a pass to a team mate.

I've just re read that, sounds extreme, but unfortunately it's the truth.

His time is up.

IB.

Agree4 Disagree4

IB I'm behind you and I bet even Torres would agree with you. No more of these excuses . He almost makes my uncle cry when he's with the ball, come on he can't friggin' pass the ball at least last season his all round play was decent now he is awful. we might aswell go in with 10 men from the start at least I wouldn't watch an old man cry .

ELI

Agree4 Disagree5

So Torres' pass the other day with the outside of his right foot to set up a goal was awful? I'm not saying that he's a great passer or anything but to say that he's now awful is stupid.

Just for a bit of banter, lads (and eds if you want!):
What is the best live moment you have ever seen at SW6?
For me it would be either Ivanovic's goal against Napoli and the ground exploding as it went in or Drogba's hat-trick goal in the 2010 drubbing of Wigan as we clinched the league. Special mention goes to the Reading match this season when a certain EH17 gave me their shirt from his home debut and David Luiz gave me an autograph and a picture! The game wasn't half bad either!
So there's my best Blue Moments guys, but I will confess I am still a student so the days of Zola and Di Matteo are a bit hazy in my memory!
Comment yours guys, lets see your greatest Blues Moments!

My personal favorite was Lamps' 4 goals against Derby in the 7-1 thrashing. I enjoyed this one the most as it took place on my birthday and I live in Derby so I could show off to my mates! (not that beating Derby is an achievement)

I was at the FA cup Semi-final against Liverpool in '97 and even though I was still young at the time the atmosphere that day was electric and that remains right up there, but I have to say the Napoli game last year was incredible.

cant believe that we are not going to offer Frank and Ashley new contracts, there ability and experience is irreplaceable and they are chelsea through and through, you cant buy that sort of attitude and dedication. Look at all the top teams in europe Bayern, Barca, Juve, all have a core of homegrown players who are committed to their club.
We need to retain them until the younger british guys have gained enough experience. This is another example of our club not doing things properly and being short sighted.
DP

Believable5 Unbelievable1

Were you watching redknapp and hasselbaink?

Agree3 Disagree1

Completely agree DP. I've been saying it since the summer. These players are just as valuable off the pitch than off it. They also have big match experience plus can take the media pressure while going through a tricky patch of the season. Invaluable to the club, and letting them go would be a step in the wrong direction!

MB

Agree3 Disagree1

You beat me to it mate

Agree1 Disagree0

Who said they wouldn't be offered contracts? If they wanted to play for Chelsea enough they'd sign the one year deals they'll be offered. Surely if they continue to prove their worth they'll be offered a further year, so on so forth.

IB.

Agree5 Disagree0

Cause it is obvious that they will still be able to add to the SQUAD in two/ three years time. And if they are mid way through a contract and we want to sell, at least we will get a bit of money for then rather than nothing.

MB

Agree1 Disagree3

I believe cole deserves more than one year. Lampard on the other hand of give a one year contract at a value of his true worth not his name value. Dropping franks contract will fund paulinho McEachran and another contract. The issue is the new financial regulations as well as the fact that frank will want to play but that will hinder younger players progress or frank will get pissy.

Tk

Agree3 Disagree1

Absolutely spot on TK. Only thing I disagree with is Cole. I believe he also only deserves a one year deal. If you look at his decline over the past year and a half, you can only assume in 2 years, he will be another yard slower, his positional sense will drop a little more, and the errors we have seen of late will continue to creep into his game.

For both players, if the truly love the club, I see no problem in signing a one year deal. As you said, if they prove they are still up to it after next year, offer the same again. Although we will miss their experience, there is only one way the younger players can gain such a thing... getting more games at the top level. I think KDB will be ready next season, Josh will be ready to be a squad rotation player, Chabolah may be ready for the same sort of role, and we already have Rami, Romeu, Mikel and Oscar that do/can play in the same position as Frank.

Melbourne CFC

Agree2 Disagree1

None of the players u have mentioned Melbourne are leaders on the pitch - if things aren't going there way they just crumble. We cannot rely on a squad filled with players below 27 yrs to mount a serious title challenge, they simply just won't know how to do it.

MB

Agree0 Disagree0

I understand that MB, but we have other players that are leaders on the pitch. A spine of Courtois, Luiz/Cahill/Terry, Mata and a new forward would be fine. Chabolah is most certainly a destined leader of the club. We don't need to hold onto players because of sentimental value. We need a new core of players to come through who understand what it means to play for Chelsea, and to give everything for 90mins and 38 league games.

Keeping Frank and Ashley around does not guarantee success. Ashley might, but Frank will not be playing week in week out next year if he is around. Tell me how exactly that differs from our rough spell this year, when Frank was out injured? What did he bring to the team in terms of off field leadership? What did he bring to the team in Japan on the field? I love the bloke, one of my all time favourite players, but you have to look forward, and IMO Frank does not 'need' to be kept around. Ashley only makes an argument for himself because he is still one of the best players in the world at left back.

Agree3 Disagree1

Forgot to sign

Melbourne CFC

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to disagree with you then because out of all the players u have mentioned I believe terry is the only leader. Chalobah is a leader but u cannot rely on an 18 year old coming into the first team and bossing people around when things aren't going great. Frank last night showed a bit of passion and set an example with big tackles and giving absolutely everything for his team. I couldn't see John Obi or Ramires showing the same sort of passion in Capital 1 cup qtr final away to Leeds. It's small things like that which make him invaluable to the club. I agree with your point however that of he loves the club he should sign a one year contract - correct me if Frank's lying Ed but he says there have been no talks of any contract.

MB {Ed002's Note - There is no offer to Lampard at this time.}

I didnt post at halftime as the anger kicked in again but i had every bit of confidence that we would get back in the game. Second half was probably the best football i have seen under rafa but still a poor performance from torres. Also i think marin done well on his first start. The rumours of sturridge to liverpool are hotting up which hopefully means the club is working hard to bring in falcao or another top striker. I just hope we do not waste time and bring someone in as soon as the window opens. If we can get that top forward and a fellani type midfielder in january we will have a great squad to finish the second half of the season.

Moses impressed me tonight. Mata is the best CAM in the world in my opinion. Luiz needs to be a DM. Ivanovic's header was classy. Fans on the site need to back us more if we are losing at half time. That goal might help Torres's confidence. Hazard took his goal well. Leeds are still much worse than us. I would give Lampard a year contract just for morale boosting and for his loyalty. Also, his passing ability and shooting is still pretty good, just his speed that has declined.
That sums up the game pretty well I think.
EH17

Believable7 Unbelievable4

How many goals does Torres need to get his confidence back.....!?!? He ain't ever going to be the player he once was end of. If we had a proper striker up there we would have banged 8+ past Leeds. How typical, isn't it? Exactly what i have told after the WBA, Fulham, Corinthians games. This team needs some 20 chances to get one goal. At this rate we'll hardly ever convert against rigid defences.

Pathetic. As for Torres - they don't pass to him, coz players know he's rubbish, but just remain cordial to a teammate. Otherwise they pass to him and he just looses the ball. Same outcome, different approach. In the end no result. screwed up.

Sack the board at last.

I won't blame Luiz much, others shd cover for him when he moves foward, but no. Luiz is a very gifted footballer and the seems like the only one that plays out his heart for the team. He shd stick at the back a lil' more though or better play in midfield.
Bas!cs.

Agree0 Disagree0

When the two players playing in our pivot roles are naturally attacking midfielders, they're not really going to slot into defense when Luiz goes on one of his runs... The goal is entirely his fault.

Agree0 Disagree0

Watch Oscar chase the ball and not pick up the runner and eventual goal scorer. He did drop in for Luis but his lack of experience in the deep role showed in that situation. We do need a deep lying midfielder who has a bit of pace and does not get sucked in to going forward. We have to realise though there will never be another Makelelle..

Agree2 Disagree0

19 Dec 2012 20:40:27
I'd like to be the first to halftime rant, many people may disagree but people should not blame this performance on Benitez we have many players out and no other striker other than Torres.

This means we have no defensive midfielder which is making us very vunerable and Torres as striker well....

No movement, no desire, first touch is horrible, drops deep if midfielders move forward.
£50mill down the drain, don't care anymore good riddance I say. £46mill for Falcao, give them £50mill and Torres and extra £4mill because it's worth it to have a stable dressing room.

Two things I don't understand to do with Chelsea FC at the moment.

1. Why does Benitez insist putting defence first when we have a team suited to attack.

2. Why are we not after Huntelaar, natural goal scorer and very cheap to buy this January with wages costing less than other players.

That's not to say I wouldn't take Falcao, would be great but definitely if Sturridge is sold we should buy Huntelaar. 2 strikers needed not 1.

A11

Believable4 Unbelievable1

If you read the posts ed said 2 strikers wether studge goes or not.

I appreciate your input and am aware of it but I get the feeling that second striker means a winger/striker like Walcott, Hulk, Schurrle type player when I'd much rather a out and out striker, Huntelaar, Demba Ba etc.

A11

Agree4 Disagree0

Not as simple as that ,they could all be in form but 2 will be on the bench, torres had competition last 2 seasons didnt make any difference,
ktbffh

Agree1 Disagree0

The beginning of last year when AVB was starting him, Torres was playing well. He then got his red card and never got his place in the team back. It's hard to build up confidence when you don't get a run in the team. Also there's a huge difference between competition and competing against a Chelsea legend for a spot. When you're lacking confidence and self-belief the last thing you want to be doing is competing against someone like Drogba.

Hmm.... Interesting fact. We are the first team to play in all competitions in one season. The community shield, EPL, super cup, COC,club world cup, champions league , FA cup, and the europa league. Wow out of the first 6 we've lost out on 4, 1 we would need a miracle and the other we should win. The FA cup would be nice and very possible to lift and the europa league coming as a result of being eliminated at the group stage of the champions league would also be a nice one to win it would take a hectic effort tho. So we still have a chance to win 2 trophies at least, but with a miracle like last season the EPL and/or Europa aswell ( would prefer the former of course) but wishful thinking yeah. Could still be a great season for us. We just need a good January and believe. Come on chelsea.

19 Dec 2012 15:09:04
Hello all. Before the January transfer window starts i have wanted to put my observations over our shortcomings and have so much to say that i kindly ask you to excuse me for the long post.

I have written in fragments here before that we are doing a totally lousy job in assembling our team and these are my observations why and what is wrong with it.

The team Mourinho built was based on physicality, tough defence, great determination and teamwork. On top of that it was assembled from world class players, leaders of their national teams, captains of their squads.

Carvalho, Makelele, Essien, Drogba, Ashely Cole, Ballack, Cech, Lamps and JT. These players could have entered any top 11 in the world at ease when at their prime. You can anything to them and those additions would look alright. Every Joe Cole, Kalou, Mikel, Deco, Malouda, Thiago, Ferreira, Anelka, etc. etc. would look alright while surrounded by such world class players.

Enter the end of Mourinho team building period. Welcome to the "advisers" and super football director Emenalo's world. What's the plan?

I know there must be some, right? We keep same team, until it matures, then becomes old, without adding to it continuously. I don't know why, but so be it. History, already. Then we start acting. Out - Ballack. In - Ramires. Whatever hell was that supposed to gives, i can't tell. A tiny Brazilian, who can not pass or dribble (must be the only one in the world) in for a world class player. Never a good idea, but we still have our core, therefor we can brew the guy in. So he suffers the first year, and then slowly starts making himself useful. But never until taken to the flank outside the central midfield, that he starts to play great football (Think Valencia or Park at their primes for United). This year taken back into the center and again looking lousy to say the least.

Mata for Joe Cole. A perfect replacement. An absolute upgrade. But then again - it's not like you are changing a Zola or Robben in a team. just a poor Joey who's career is going down the hill rapidly. Mata becomes an instant hit, because he compliments the rigid team in a way Robben complimented our play back in a day.

Luiz for Carvalho. Judging by the ballplaying attributes, passing and pace almost a like for like. Just without one thing. Commitment and concentration. Another thing - to play alongside an older, and even more injury prone JT. Still in the process. Could become a world class player, but it may happen or may not. And if it will we would have had at least a three, four year gap in development. Never a like for like performance - wise.

Torres for Drogba. Whoever had that idea, must have had it work on some football manager or some computer game. Never in a real life. Just a stupid, personic decision, which is out of logic, per se. To play a sole forward formation you require certain qualities from a forward and certain supporting cast. Look at any successful single forward line-ups's and you'll see one certain stand out asect - a strong forward on the tip, pacy and technically gifted wing players and a good playmaker behind. This an't no rocket science. How does it fit into the description of ours? Torres hasn't got a single attribute to play in this system. Why did we buy him is beyond me.

Hazard and Oscar. Great players, by no means. But now they enter the team with all the aforementioned shortcomings. Are technically gifted, but physically lame. Are in the first season of EPL. Are young kids with bags of potential, but no core in the team whatsoever.

So where and why have we got wrong. I guess there was a plan. But i can see a troubling pattern. we never close our deals in time or ever complete the job. Third year running we are doing this. From Robinho, to Aguero, to Torres and Luiz, to Falcao, or whoever arrives. We never complete the job.

Secondly. If we want flair in English Premier League, please explain to Mr. Abramovich, that you can not be a Barcelona in England. Never. Barca is not playing the Stokes and Blackburns, WBA's and Birminghams of the world week in and week out. You get chopped to the ground and noone cares about it. It's a completely different culture and refereeing. Noone favors Chelsea's technically gifted guys or is fast to blow the whistle in the box, coz they don't care, we ain't no darlings of world football. Quite contrary. Therefor you see Torres on the ground with hands in the sky and head shaking. Always.

If you want a balanced team you have got to bring balance. We are changing 32-33 year old men with 21 year old kids. Whose gonna lead? When will they peak? We are becoming an Arsenal, or even worse a Liverpool. You think we'll keep Hazard, Oscar or Mata at the club with no chance of silverware?

Yes i know we just won 2 titles last year, but it was done with completely different team. Not this one. It is simple to be a clumsy, slow pointless player in Mikel when you have Lampard, Ballack and Essien playing alongsde. But look at how your talents show up when you are required to be THE man. Puff.

Oscar, Hazard and Mata would do wonders with a Drogba in his prime and Ballack and Makele playing behind in their prime. But it won't happen, right.

It is just simple - we have bought wrong guys with wrong expectations, wrong characteristics to play wrong positions. Khedira and Ozil has cost RM less than what we paid for Ramires. So if you want this system to work, you have to finally start making right buys or make the right adjustments to they playing set up. And considering we are failing in doing so bring in someone who knows how to do it.

A team we could have possibly had -

Cech

Dani Alves-Terry-Thiago Silva-ACole
Schweinsteiger- Vidal
Mata-Ozil-Hazard
Ibrahimovic

You can adjust it either way you like it and throw in names like Reus, Fellaini, Cavani, Pastore, Kompany, Aguerro, etc. etc.

Problem remains the same. Either you make a plan and execute it, or fire a coach every year, because he can not make a soup without a broth.

Excuse me for some chaotic writing at times, but this i had to let out.

Thanks and Merry Christmas everyone.

JG

Believable5 Unbelievable1

I liked this until you mentioned the team we could have had. why not throw ronaldo, messi and xavi in the mix as well? we are trying to go from a team that buys superstars to younger cheaper players who will become superstars. if you were to purchase that team, it would probably be another 300 million (silva by himself went for about 40) we do need more leaders but splashing the cash for big names wont help us. out of that team you can argue that every single player is a superstar but look at man u. if you see their midfield, they look average but it works because they know what they're doing under a manager who gets the best out of them. you talked about a football manager game but that line up looks more like fifa

Vincent

Agree2 Disagree2

I did not throw those names in just for the sake of it. Those players, apart from Schweinsteiger, they were available and we had interest in them, but they have gone elsewhere and we brought in other guys.

Vidal cost Juve over 10 mil and he'd be an upgrade over any one of Ramires, Romeu, Essien or Mikel.

Khedira has cost RM about the same.

Ozil around same amount.

You are saying we are trying to buy cheaper up and coming players, but look up:

Hazard for over 30 million, Torres 50, Ramires, Luiz and Oscar all over 20 million. I mean these are the prices you buy superstars for, not just some up and coming guys. That is unless you are Liverpool.

JG

Agree1 Disagree0

If everyone would've known how players would develope this would be a much different sport. And just because we get linked with a player doesn't mean we have a chance to sign them. We aren't gonna get too many guys away from barca or Madrid and homegrown kids at bayern aren't gonna be fighting to come to us either.

To an extent. It's very much a different game when you know what you are doing and when you pretend that you do. It gives you a completely different perspective if you have read the autobiography of Jose for instance and do know the fact how Jose and the owner sees targets. Just from the one story when he was offered Ronaldo (the original Brazilian) by the owner and he asked to bring in the one who the owner did not even know in Drogda.

The story continues. Remember we have had a very bad luck when it comes to strikers under Abramovich. We had Kezman, Crespo, Shevchenko, Pizarro and Torres.

And clearly Drogba and Anelka the only success purchases in strikers dept. were hardly the owner call. That basicly sums it up.

I think celtics Gary Hooper would be ideal for your team. 10m should do it

Believable5 Unbelievable4

I actually do, to a certain degree, agree with this! Hopper has not only looked good in the SPL but also the Champions League! He's a natural finisher - I have little doubt he'd score goals in the Premiership! Would arguably prefer him to Walcott to replace Sturridge but, even at the difference in price, you'd always take Falcao or Cavani over him! One of those plus Hopper would suit me fine!

Kevin get a grip mate, it's Xmas time, learn to relax and enjoy life. If you haven't realised that the Ed's aren't big on guessing and predictions, you really do need a lie down. The Ed's work in facts. Thankfully aswell, because every Tom, Dick and Harry is happy to throw out an opinion, on here you can at least get some factually correct info, it's what I actually enjoy most about the site.

The site wasn't created so that Eds could be asked mundane questions and give their opinions on things. I can actually remember when this site didnt have Editors. Just a random list of terrifically creative rumours. So just chill out mate, there is more to life than getting pissothers with the Eds choosing to not give you an opinion. Maybe go and get your noodle wet mate, always sure to help.

If we sign two forward players in January, what will happen to Torres? Remain first choice, sold, or loaned?

Another striker to choose from...
