From Ed002 on the Liverpool page:
Regardless of what the Premier League say this afternoon (they could just go through the motions and say "intent is to finish" (which it is of course), "need to assess the logistics" (the June 30 issue - which is easily fixed), "can't put a start on when training could start and matches begin", "still looking at options to play games behind closed doors" etc., I very much suspect the season is now done. The RFEF in Spain have announced the major part of their solution (La Liga has one major issue with it (to do with games restarting and stopping again) but have not really addressed the promotion/ relegation issue (they have what they think is the answer but have yet to consult I understand - which oddly enough has never stopped them in the past) . There has been a significant backlash in Germany to the proposals to start as soon as they can behind closed doors - which means we could see the original plan to draw a line across etc. back on the table. The position in Italy is clear, the major clubs want a cut off. This afternoon it is likely that nine or ten PL sides will push a motion and ask for a vote to end the season now (they are not going to propose how that happens, as they see that as a specific issue) .
Ed, any idea when the decision might be formally announced?

Would agree with your analysis RJ28P though do not know how contractual obligations etc may weigh on when decision might be made. The point has been made - as expect you have heard - that even if games were played behind closed doors and televised there would need to be about 250 people in a stadium and it just needs one of those to have the virus etc. Seems as though antibody testing to see whether you've had not yet entirely reliable plus scientists not sure that this would give you immunity anyway and/ or for how long. Also how can you train properly while maintaining social distance. So it may well be that it is the financial details and question of relegation/ promotion that is what now/ soon needs further discussion?

Oh and related to question of relegation plus whom plays in Europe is what to do about the clubs who have played a game less than most of the rest ie Aston Villa (could get out of relegation zone) and -- less of a problem perhaps - Sheffield United (could go ahead of Man United re UEFA place)

{Ed002's Note - The most viable plan would not see any relegation.}

Ed002 but what about WBA and Leeds who surely were about to get promoted?

{Ed002's Note - My expectation is that the PL will try to follow the "Bundesliga" approach should they not be able to finish the season. The "Bundesliga" is like this: draw a line across; no champions; European places on current standings; top two promoted down through the leagues; no relegation this season but addition one relegated next two seasons. The approach has a lot of support.}

Yes, thanks Ed002, you're right that should be the plan.

Bundesliga approach makes the most sense by a long way in my opinion.

I don’t understand all the support for leaving this season unfinished especially those that want this season ended now in order to start next season on time. Why should one season be less important than another? The European championships have been pushed back a year so this summer has been freed up (although this is optimistic) Surely the plan must remain to finish this season even if it means pushing back next season, this time period has been a break for the players so there wouldn’t be the need for a normal sized break between the end of this season and the start of next.
All that said, the proposal above does suit Chelsea as it would mean we get top 4 and we are precariously close to dropping out of the champions league spots as it stands.

{Ed002's Note - It is not about starting next season on time.}

I said a few months ago that let automatic promotion teams up with no relaxation and next season 5 get relegated in every league
I also think league Cup and Fa Cup replays should be postponed for a year because of extra 4 games per season
My big worry is how do we fit all this in with winter break, euros and European footy.

I really couldn’t give a flying fig about this season.

I think it’s unfair on Liverpool and any other team who may have got promoted but may well end up staying in there respective division because of no play off matches.

If Liverpool end up being “given” by some strange mechanism the Premiership title I will take the pi## out of my Liverpool supporting friends for years!

I have said it before, I just don’t see this season being completed. I think it will be declared void.

Can’t wait until next season to start.

Stay safe everyone and thanks to the Eds for there tolerance and continued updates.

agree Tom. Liverpool are the best team and fully deserve the premiership title. But rival supporters will forever say they didn't win the title, they were given it because of the virus.

Sad as it is for Liverpool, they shouldn't just be given title. It'll forever have an asterisk because they haven't won it, just like the teams currently in relegation spots haven't been relegated. What a tough situation.

I think the Bundesliga solution is the obvious route - declare this season void / no relegation / European places as they stand and prepare for next season.

The only problem is the case of Sheffield United who have a game in hand on Manchester United and would move ahead of MU into a European place if they won the game in hand.
