Currently being linked with, Alderweireld who is 29 and has a buyout clause of £25 million.

Apparently Varane is valued at £50m, but I don't see us linked with him.

I'd prefer the latter, mainly for longevity, but Alderweireld is a warrior and a leader too, which would help us.

Who of the two would you opt for?

I think Alderweireld is the better defender of the two, and would prefer him. But I don't know if we need him? We've got Zouma, who might deserve a go?

TA had the prem experience and is one one best in league, but varane is younger quicker and great on ball, and better long term option. Could have long relationship with christensen, but leave Madrid for chelsea? Don’t think so personally.

We lack leaders more than anything and Alderweireld will also do Christensen the world of good he’d be the best option as Zouma is still young too but it ain’t going to happen and neither will Varane.

I think he is far ahead of Varane as a true defender. Varane is good but his pace helps him out a lot when you watch him play.

Really? wow, if the Ed confirms it then it must be so. Wow! This one is really hard take-in cos something in me will always pick Varane ahead of Alderwerield.

{Ed001's Note - I am with Ed018, Varane is faster but not half as good overall as Alderweireld. Alderweireld is excellent defensively, really strong, really good on the ball and fully capable of playing right back or defensive midfield too. He just lacks genuine pace, though he is not slow, just not quick.}

Alderweireld is only available at £25m if he agrees to a 1 year extension to his contract - we're looking at £40+m.
