Vale and Gilmour supposed to going into a tournament in the states with the development squad. So that makes sense.

Anjorin going out on loan.

Broja who knows seems to be changing all the time.

{Ed002's Note - Broja has requested a permanent move.}

Tuchel could've just assured him that there's going to be plenty of time for everyone and that he's got a fair crack at being the number 1 striker. But no, let's bank on Werner and Havertz, two guys who haven't at any point proven they can consistently score in PL yet command huge wages.

The choices the club has made in terms of selling players these past 2 years have been shocking. Guehi and Colwill developed in house, yet we're now trying to buy 3 big money CBs, while having sold Guehi (who's quickly become an England international and one of the PL's finest CBs) and about to let go of Colwill (who incredibly might be an even bigger CB talent) .

Tuchel's squad planning is some of the worst I've ever seen and the club will rue these decisions in a few years.

Jackson, its not the Club or TT but the players decision.
Im sure Guehi and Tomori like Broja wanted to leave.

West Ham have apparently been in contact with him for a while now Jackson. He’s probably had his head turned by money and the promise of 1st team football over just a maybe from Tuchel and Chelsea. West Ham can afford to take the gamble were as we have a lot more at stake. I’m not saying that’s it’s the right thing to do and I’m gutted to see him go but it seems like club policy not to keep players who don’t want to be their and fight for their place.

I'm also pretty confused by this turn of events, Jackson. Playing Kenedy and Barkley at the end of last season when he could have given debuts to some younger players also didn't make sense to me. Hard not to feel as though TT is going to continue to spurn young talent from within the club unless his hand is forced (e. g. Chalobah) – a disappointing state of affairs. When you look at the players we apparently want to bring in it makes even less sense; I've not seem Kimpembe play myself beyond CL, but Phillipe Auclair gave his opinion on the Guardian podcast and I'm a bit baffled as to why we'd want him.

It seems no matter the coach, Lampard aside, Chelsea managers fail to draw upon the considerable talent coming through the ranks - this is less a blip and more more reverting to type for Chelsea. I always feel that with players who've come through you get an uptick in performance, and have never understood managers' reticence to use them – the benefits seem clear. Perhaps the culture of the club is not established in that way (it's not a requisite for a manager at Chelsea), or it's simply too high pressure a position given the club's global status?

Ed001, when Tuchel arrived at Chelsea I believe he had a track record of developing young talent, at Dortmund in particular, though I might have misremembered that. Yet the moves he's made since being here suggest he has no interest in promoting youth players from within the club's ranks. What's your take on the current situation?

{Ed001's Note - he was not known for developing players, this is the way he manages. He, like most managers, prefers to buy when possible, even when their best success is achieved with youngsters. It is bizarre how few of them see that a ready-made player is not usually better than bringing through a youngster. You need a few to come through to bring the right desire and attitude, as they usually put that bit more in due to love of the club.}

We have five at players I can think of in our squad that have come through our youth system. I’m not sure how that compares with other clubs.

We have been blessed with some good youngsters that probably deserved more of a chance to shine. I hope we can get the right balance going forward but I have no doubt we will make mistakes.

At PSG when Tuchel was there both Nkunku and Moussa Diaby - 2 attackers valued very highly by their clubs - left due to lack of playing time, with Nkunku I think even being deployed as a wingback. He's not good with young players.

I know Broja wants to leave, but he's on a long term contract. Why can't Tuchel just tell the club that he needs Broja to stay, like he did when Cal requested to go on loan last summer? Our backup striker currently is Werner, who's got maybe 10 PL goals in 2 full seasons, with probably 5 of those goals coming against a woeful Southampton side that play a suicidal high line defense similar to Bundesliga defences.
Broja's case isn't even about wanting the youth players to be given a chance. It's about wanting the better players to be kept in the Chelsea 1st team squad. Werner has proven himself to be below the required level for PL football. I like his attitude, but he doesn't have the quality on the ball that is required to play for Chelsea.

And buying 3 (! ) new CBs in one summer, all for big money, is ridiculous. You have one of the world's most talented young players in the position in Colwill. I like the Koulibaly purchase, that's fine. He'll add much needed experience, especially with Silva likely to leave next summer. And if you're intent on continuing 3 at the back, then I understand wanting Kounde too as he seems a good fit for that RCB spot and can cover a bit at wingback. Good Azpi replacement. But trying to buy Kimpembe (and before him Ake) on top of that when you have Colwill? That's the equivalent of telling Colwill to buzz off as he won't get a chance to even rotate in the side.

We sold Guehi for 20m last summer, and many fans were happy with that at the time. Selling a Championship defender with 0 PL minutes for 20 mil, great business. Yet it was abundantly clear to anybody who watched him even under Lampard against United in the cup that Guehi had all the makings of an outstanding defender. Then he was one of the Championship's best defenders, and anybody that knew Guehi knew he'd be a hit in PL. Fast forward half a season and you've sold an England international and his club's (vice) captain for 20 mil. Horrible business, especially if the summer after you're then chasing Kounde for triple that, and Kounde isn't even a better defender.

Then you'd hope the club would learn from that, but here we are. 1 year later and they're ready to move on Colwill to bring in a shiny toy from abroad. Very frustrating to see the club repeat the same mistakes time and time again. Our current best players are both from Cobham, Mount and James. Chelsea has the advantage that the academy churns out these super talents that can play a big part as they have the quality and oftentimes the mentality for it. Yet aside from Lampard they refuse to use it.

I had no idea that CHO asked to go on loan last summer Jackson but the fact he stayed shows he was given some sort of assurances by TT and he chose to stay rather than any loan.

It would only be a guess but maybe Broja was given similar assurances but that. Wasn’t enough for the player.

I find it very hard to argue with anyof the points you have made Jackson. As I said I will be sad to see Broja leave and would be absolutely gutted if Colwill were to follow. Truth be told tho none of us know what is going on behind the scenes and what is going on in these young players heads. Maybe there does need to be a clearer plan for a pathway to the first team but I thought maybe Mount, James, Chalobah and Hudson Odoi may well of been that example . I guess we have just got to trust the judgement of the club and hope they are making the right calls.

Jackson mate you are absolutely right.

I understand that we have a club that is competing at the highest level and that we need a mix of experienced and young players but there is no pathway for these young guys to get into the first team. Maybe Colwill and Broja aren't ready to start for us, but they surely are big talents that are going to be very successful.
I know that the likes of Lamptey, Livramento and the rest want to leave and play regularly and when I put myself in their position I don't blame them. This is totally on the club.
Also I think if Lamps didn't give Mount and James a chance, they would have also gone to another team. I'm curious to see what happens with Conor.

10.) 18 Jul 2022
18 Jul 2022 20:07:04
Or maybe the professional coaches who see these players train day in and day out know what levels the players need to achieve to reach the top levels required to build a title contending team and they simply cannot offer guarantees to young players who want instant success rather than work hard to achieve great things with club.

11.) 18 Jul 2022
18 Jul 2022 21:11:57
They don't want to be instant starters, Tru3Blu3. What they want is a fair chance, and I can imagine that Colwill for example doesn't really see a fair chance if the coach wants to bring in 3 big money CBs. That's not really providing him with a shot to play. I'm not saying Colwill should be a starter on day 1. But if you buy Kounde, Kimpembe, Koulibaly for 150 mil combined, and on top of that you already have Thiago Silva and Chalobah, then I don't blame Colwill for not wanting to stick around and be relegated to watching the matches from home while not even being named in the matchday squad.

Lots of interesting comments and opinions above, bottom line is we are backing TT which most on here have wanted for a long long time, back the manager that is. I would love to see a team full of academy players, walk the league and see them dominate for the next decade.
I guess it is a balance.
What I couldn't understand is TT playing that bloke from Belguim, Batsy! Why not give Broja that 2nd half?

13.) 18 Jul 2022
18 Jul 2022 22:18:32
Jackson, Colwill looks a talent but he hasn’t played a Premiership game and we are basing any judgement on his playing abilities on a season at Huddersfield.

It could well be that he will become a top player and I hope that will be a our club.

I think a season long loan at a Premiership club would serve all parties well but if he wants to leave that’s up to him. I will be sad but I can’t say on what I’ve seen of him he will be a top Premiership player. The same comment applies to Gilmour, Vale, Broja and Anjorin.

It’s a fair comment to say the same applied to Mount, and James but at the time of those decisions we had very little choice but to give them a chance.

14.) 18 Jul 2022
18 Jul 2022 22:35:55
I know it’s disappointing, letting some of these lads go but if they want to further their career elsewhere we can’t really grumble. How many of us stay in a job we hate… actually don’t answer that ?

But seriously, Broja is a talent but he’s nowhere near ready to lead our attack. He did ok last season, show glimpses but a lot of games he wasn’t great. If he isn’t happy to play second fiddle to Havertz or a potential signing then he should get games elsewhere, just a shame it might not be a loan.

Colwill, on the other hand I think would be a massive mistake. For me, he’s ready now. I’d go as far as to say he’s better than Chalobah, definitely better than Sarr and I don’t rate Kimpembe if he comes in so I’d sooner as save that money and use Colwill.

G8, Broja is injured and that’s why he got zero mins in the friendly.

Wise words as usual Tom B. We do get a little too excited about prospects from the academy. I remember lots on here hyping Cho a good few years back and now the same posters wanting him sold!

Interesting thread. As for TT as I’ve said before he doesn’t bring young players on or man manage squad players last season none of the forwards got a decent run constant chopping and changing the front three. TT is all about tactics. Let’s not go overboard with our academy players apart from James and Mount the others left in the squad have been disappointing: we have let some good one’s go and kept some not so good ones. As far as Broja is concerned I am fed up with him. He decided to get “ lawyered up” with his representatives and make demands about regular game time: like too many other young players who have done FA. What this demonstrates is that we need to appoint a top class Sporting Director to take an overview of these issues. As for CBs we definitely need to bring 2 in and possibly 3 if Dave goes. Chalobah is nowhere near being a top class defender.

To be honest its difficult - we all want to see youth stay and get a chance but we don't really have the full information. I would say its a bit of a circus, lots of things being said in the media and even if they are pretty accurate it isn't the complete story

chelsea have a policy of not keeping anyone who is unhappy and doesn't want to stay. broja has the choice of staying at chelsea being a squad player and probably only getting cup minutes. or go to west ham, be in a top 8, possibly top 6 team and get a pay rise and probably play week in week out or close to it. he isn't a mount who has been at chelsea all his life or a james whos dream is to play for chelsea. broja just wants first team football.

Colwill, i basically think there is a lot of bull being said about him. we are going for 2 more cb, we will hopefully get one. there is still space in the squad. i would either like him to go on loan for a year and then replace silva in the squad or stay and learn off silva before he leaves. we shouldn't read 100% into everything in the media

basically don't get bent out of shape about everything you read and also I think in a perfect world TT would love to keep every player. but if a player wants to go they want to go and chelsea won't stand in players way.

Actually Jackson you are absolutely right about Diaby and Nkunku.
