Looks like Barkley is a done deal. I wasn't keen at first but at 15 million it's not bad considering his potential he does chip in with goals and he will be very good in a 3-5-2.

I hope these Carroll rumours go away though he's not dynamic enough. I'd love to see Vardy here to give Morata some competition. Vardy is absolutely electric and he's a lot better than people give him credit for.

I'm shocked how few Chelsea fans likes this move. He's a young, Homegrown player (something we need more of) who'll give us goals in midfield and will add more creativity to the team in a 352 against weaker teams. And if the sum is correct (around 15m) even if he was to become a flop we'll be able to sell on in the future for a similar sum. Only issues with Barkley is his ability keep fit and avoid injuries. He can also be sloppy at times but I'm sure that'll be something Conte will sort out with him. I know it will hurt RLC's chances but i feel Barkley can offer more to this team currently than what RLC can but that's just my opinion. Personally would be very happy to see this go through.

Maybe there’s a plan that in 1/ 2 years a midfield of Barkley Kante Loftus Cheek? 15m is good business unless it stops us buying a goalscoring midfielder,

loftus cheek isn't setting the world alight at palace i don't think personally ever think he has the work rate or desire to play in a conte side hope im wrong.

£15m for a player out for a year, intermittent the previous year and never got anywhere towards fulfilling the potential they 'felt' he had, to me an absolute waste of money. As infuriating as he is and in fairness he does seem to have found a new lease of life, what does Barkley offer that we cannot get from Willian. I am adamant this is nothing to do with Conte who would not have a clue about Barkley. Another concern, the last three players we bought (including Barkley) have been injured. There are lot here that are supporters of Loftus-Cheek but I cannot see him playing for Chelsea unless he sees the light and ups his workrate.

Being perfectly honest I’m not s great fan of Loftus Cheek, preferred chalobah, but because his young English and through youth we all hold loftus in a better light and think his better than he is.

RB is a fantastic addition to the squad. Elegant, strong, quick and can both see a pass and score from outside the box. City were looking at him before he got injured and prices were a lot higher than the £15M being quoted now. A great technical player who may be a world beater one day.

G8: You were blowing a gasket after the Arsenal game about Morata being a waste of money when his movement is superb, heading equally good but he is having a crisis of confidence in front of goal and here you are ecstatic about about a player who has done nothing in two years and 'never' got near any of the potential people 'believed' he had. I guarantee Conte had no say whatsoever in that buy.

United fan here lads just wanted to say this could be a huge bargain for you guys. Barkley clearly has the potential just need a fresh start and to get his head down and concentrate on his football. Should be less pressure without being the local lad/ messiah and with a tiny price tag, he could really flourish. And considering the way you play and the formation, it could be a match made in heaven. With a strong midfield around him and willing runners, I expect him to be very effective. I wish him luck as I have always thought he was a talented lad and for his sake I hope he makes the most of his potential as it would be such a waste otherwise.

dont see what the fuss is its 15 million not out of any of our pockets he's a steal for that price i hope he goes on to fill his potential he couldn't be any worse dan bakayoko anyway that's for sure.

I don’t post very often but always on the site and love reading people’s thoughts on our players and transfers.

I was very happy to see that we have signed Barkley. There is definitely a top player hidden there and hopefully Conte can fulfill his potential for us for many years!

Not sure why everyone always mentions how much players cost. The market is crazy but it’s also not our money, so I personally could care less how much we pay for players, just as long as they play well for the club.

Love to hear you guys thoughts on where Barkley should best be used, ie in the CAM role in the 3-5-2, wouldn’t know where to use him best in the 3-4-3 to be honest.

Maybe barkley is seen as replacement to Fabregas? I think he would slot nicely with Drinkwater/ Kante/ pair. Maybe not from the start but slowly against lesser teams.

Love banter sites and the comments. I bet if he had signed for spuds, there would have been lots of comments about how glad we are that he didn't sign for us, bad injury record, overrated, dodged a bullet. Does make me laugh.

C1955 I see you have already added Barclay to your long list of Chelsea players you don't rate. lol. Batsy, Willian, RLC, Bakayoko etc. You even said you couldn't understand why people rated Christensen not long ago lol. not to mention your thoughts on Drinkwater before he signed. Man, take a chill.

G8: I don't hate any player and all try. To me Chelsea are too big to spend money on the likes of Barkley BUT I hope he works out because of the team. I don't rate Bats and I think him and the likes of Rahman and Cuadrado were absolute wastes of money and somebody should be held accountable. Willian frustrates me as he is talented, has a good shot in both feet and works his socks off BUT the end product is missing and we didn't buy him to just run a around. Loftus-Cheek is lazy and I doubt he will make it anywhere; he moved to Palce 'because it is near where I live', honestly. Bakayoko has all the attributes but so far he looks like an athlete trying to play football. Christensen I saw several times when he was in Germany and he looked average BUT he has really won me over and gets better every game. I would play Drinkwater over Bakayoko and I like him and did when he was at Leicester but given all the the players we had been apparently associated with I thought it was a big climb down. Clearly I am older than you and view chelsea differently but never through rose tinted or in your case blue tinted glasses. To me SID summed up the Barkley transfer well; if he had gone to Spurs he would have been ripped. Keep up the banter I miss it when you go quiet.

C1955. Just to clear up the age issue. I was watching Chelsea in the 70's and 80's when me and my mates turned up in the shed for under a fiver and would transfer to the old west stand benches for 50p. I knew the likes of Greenaway and his crew! I had a season ticket in the Mathew Harding Upper from mid 90's and still regard our 1997 Cup Final win as our greatest ever. I was there. I remember Clive Walker away at Bolton when we were on the verge of Div 3 and probably no more! Rose tinted? Do me a favour. I've probably seen more games than most on here and truly love my club. My daughter is called Chelsea and my Son adores the club as I do. My wife is very supportive as well. Sad maybe but not rose tinted, I have seen it all mate which probably explains why I'm so positive about things in these wonderful winning times!

G8: No criticism it's a banter forum and if we all agree it would be a miserable one. I remember those heady days of Clive Walker (under rated) but I started in 1955 so I have been to hell and back a few times and I worked with Matthew Harding and we had plenty of arguments also. As of today I think Bats and Bayakoko are losing a lot of support so that spat is going to run and run. Never sad supporting Chelsea, frustrating is the word I would use. Till the next clash.

Linked to Andy Carroll, as back up. who is hardly even a West Hams back up, we have a striker who is great in the air we need different option.

Chelsea close in on £15m deal for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

Looking at the betting odds on January window, seems that Ross Barkley most likely ie odds on in betting signing. Not quite a De Bruyne then - oh that we still had him! RB a gamble? Still early days, and bookies offer perhaps some faint hope for us getting Vidal or Sandro. or Mahrez and, even more remotely but for me most excitingly, Aubemayang (who of these would you most want? ) .

But despite all the paper rumours, perhaps not much will happen. Anybody got any news?
Happy New Year to all, and especially to the Eds including that long term favourite of mine and many others so sadly plagued by fake CFC fans on this site the legendary Ed002. But input of all Eds (including Eds 1 and 18) hugely appreciated.

Happy new year to you mate. Not necessarily transfer news but apparently Courtois said he is close to sign a new deal at the club! . Also stated he encourages Hazard to sign as well and expects him to. Personally that beats any transfer we could make this window if it happens. I said a while ago Courtois is more replaceable than Hazard but there is no doubt he is world class, the performamce last night was one of his best in a Chelsea shirt. It's obvious to see the areas we need to improve in. I'd expect a new striker and a midfielder like Barkley. A lot of people have underrated Barkley, I'm pretty sure he's created the most chances in Europe for players under 22 which is very impressive. Dream window for me would be Sandro, Auba, Vidal and maybe Mahrez. Realistically Mahrez, Barkley and any decent striker to play with Morata or just to help add some goals from the bench would be great. But this is January and we know how hard it can be to get quality players without paying ridiculous sums so we'll have to wait and see.

Thanks LondonBlues90. Good news if TC signing and encouraging EH to as well. Both absolutely key players, near impossible to replace and keeping them essential for CFC going forward. EH has been sparkling of late, TC some fantastic saves esp. in some big games. So yes, not just a matter of who we bring in but who we can hang on to, though a dream window would be welcome! If Barkley could rediscover early, slightly like AFC's Wilshire, form he might indeed be the bustling, strong and creative mf additionthat (with Vidal too?! ) would strengthen us where we need it, but also help grow our home grown/ English component in squad.
