Hey ED, do you think Chelsea will buy a attacking midfielder in January? {ed's note - it is hard to say, I have not heard of any moves for one, but there is still time for one to happen. I would not expect it though, the defence seems to be the priority right now.}

Hey Ed, do you think that Chelsea may move for Nicolas Lombaerts even if Ivannovic resigns to add depth and quality to our defense? {ed's note - Ivanovic is a done deal to sign a new contract isn't he? There are moves afoot to bring in a defender, not sure if it is him though.}

I noticed the further discussion on Romelu Lukaku. The issue as I see it with Lukaku is the price/risk factor. He is very young but attracting a lot of interest across Europe. His skill is not the sublime touch but the speed and physical presence that allows him to keep defenders at bay. That skill is fine on occasion but not necessarily what is needed at Real Madrid or Chelsea. Anderlecht have adapted their game to allow for these attributes – long ball over the top, Lukaku running on to it, defenders bouncing off him and then a strike at goal. That is fine in the Belgian Pro League but the leading sides are not going to change to a long ball game in order to accommodate one player. They want some convincing that the player can be bought on to have an improved all round game – and this is why they are reluctant to get in to a situation with paying so much for the player if there is a risk of not being able to recoup it. Whilst interest from Chelsea and Real Madrid (and no doubt others) remains, unless a deal for a summer move can be agreed at an acceptable price, both clubs may simply remove themselves from the bidding. It has been mentioned before, but do not discount the player moving to Ajax in the summer for a reasonably small initial fee and a significant sell on clause. Ajax has the infrastructure to help the player mature and are able to give him first team football - something the other clubs may not be able to do. In my opinion, it is probably the best move that the player could make.

Sharkey.

Hey Ed, do you think Carlo is interested in bringing a defensive midfielder or an attacking midfielder (playmaker) to aid his midfield? {ed's note - he is interested in both, but his main priority is the defensive midfield, I believe.}

Why both def and attacking midfielder. We already have many defensive midfielders in Ramires and Mikel and Essien could always shift there. We really need a play maker though so that should be priority. Signing both an attacking and defensive midfielder might push back the development of Mceachran as well. Your thoughts Ed? {ed's note - none of those players are defensive midfielders, Mikel is being forced to play there, completely out of position, but Ramires etc are not defensive at all.}

So Ed, do you know which player(s) Carlo has in mind for that position?

{Editor's Note: I doubt that a defensive midfielder will be sought in January. Perhaps the summer.}

So Ed, what about an attacking midfielder. Do you think Chelsea will bring in a play maker in January and any player in particular as well?

{Editor's Note: Considerations for 2011 I am aware of at present include: right back (v d weil is the first choice - but it depends what happens with Bosingwa); centre back (Nicolas Lombaerts is probably the first choice but it depends what happens with Ivanovic); midfield (Pastore was offered to Chelsea in November at considerably more than the £35M being suggested - and whilst the club are interested the price would need to be much lower); forward (the club remain keen on Lukaku and would like to tie up a deal in January for the summer, and they are aware that a second forward will soon be needed).}
