Whilst I don't think Mustafi is the greatest CB we could sign from what I've seen of him I do think he's a lot better than Cahill and an ever seeing JT and with his release clause being relatively low I think we should do what we normally do and hijack Arsenals transfer target 😂 Then next year we will have Zouma, Christensen and Mustafi with either Tomori or Clarke-Salter as fourth choice which is very good.

Looks like it is going to Lindelof for the centre half option.

No surprise, mind, he is a cheaper and easy option after all.

When he is deemed not good enough, he will be cast aside and we will back to square one like our left back scenario.

Willing to pay Everton stupid money for Lukaku when it is clear we need an elite centre half. The lunatics are running the asylum.

Especially annoying when Everton will not sell anyone to us even if we offered twice the asking price. The club are wasting their time getting drawn in to a wild goose chase with them that will go nowhere like last year.

Funny how Everton are not "enraged" by Man Citeh getting Stones. We should never do any business with them again, no more loans or anything, that will give them taste of their own medicine. Quote them 50 million for Begovic if they are still interested.

Haven't liked many of your posts but I agree with this one. Kante is a sensational signing but a CB should have been number one priority. I can see us turning our attention to Mustafi he wouldn't be the worst option but not the best either.

Not your biggest fan either but at least there is something we agree on. It is not a popularity contest.

The targets should simply be Koulibaly or failing that and De Laurentiis does not give us an answer within two days, pay the £50m for Stones before Citeh do and convince him to change his mind. This needs to be sorted within the next week, not dragged on and the club left sucking heir thumb on deadline day if Napoli stiff us. By the way, Maksimovic is like Lindelov, after watching them both extensively, not good enough, but again, cheap.

Mustafi would be an ok signing but far from first choice and we would likely be back in the same position win the next twelve months. This is the the long term successor to John Terry we are talking about but the club don't seem to be concerned about the level of centre half they are buying, again, all about price.

All I will say is that you get what you pay for the vast majority of time but Leicester have given clubs an excuse to try and do things on the cheap which most of time ends up not going well bar the odd exception.

Personally I'd steer well clear of Stones for £50m. I think he'll do well in a Pep team as his style of play doesn't really require CB's but more ball distribution as they generally dominate possession. However he wouldn't really fit in with us imo, and his defensive frailties would be exposed unless he managed to fix them. I think I would be fairly happy with either Mustafi or Lindelof. If neither manage to nail down a first team place by next season, then hopefully Christensen will come back and start with Zouma and they'll be good 3rd choice CB's.

I don't think we really can replace him, but maybe Christensen or Clarke-Salter are seen as the long term successors to Terry; I'd imagine at least one of them, prob Christensen, will be in the first team next season.

There seems to be an expectation for the club to buy Terry's replacement, and immediate success, when they might be playing a longer game. They might have recognised that we have some very talented CB's (include Tomori in that too) knocking on the first teams door.

I'm not saying we shouldn't sign a CB, just not get dragged into sillyness. Koulibaly would be a good signing, but if Napoli want to mess us around then we should walk away. I was big on Stones last season but, after the season he's had, £50m? I think Christensen is already a better player already and we only have to wait a year to have him back for nothing. Mustafi or Lindelof would be solid buys and certainly would be able replacements for Ivanovic.

Does Thiago Maia have the quality to step into completion in our midfield? Or would he be another one in our massive loan army.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

04 Aug 2016 19:14:38
If he's not good enough to start we shouldn't be buying him we've got enough players to step in and do a job what we're lacking is quality.

04 Aug 2016 19:15:02
We already have a very strong midfield we played superb in the second half against AC Milan Moses played well yet again and Konte will be even better than Makelele he is a brilliant signing as he showed last night I have high hopes with Conte in charge he can change systems to suit the situation and we are looking more solid already hope we get that Defender centre half we are after he is really good and also Lukaku we need to compete for places this year will be a good year COME ON YOU BLUES.

Loan army I would imagine, unless we're selling someone.

We have six CMs why would Chelsea sign one more?

Anything new on Koulibaly Ed? I've seen today from a couple of different sources that he's close to agreeing a new contract with Napoli. Looks like it could be back to the drawing board.

Yeah Mustafi is the answer.

Ed are we looking to buy any full backs before end of the window
Thanks.

Wow, then a lot of faith is had in Aina and Ivanovic. It's good that Aina will get a shot, but Ivanovic should not be a starter at right back.

Agree2 Disagree0

04 Aug 2016 14:49:57
So basically we have two full backs in Aina and Azpi? Ivanovic should never be a full back again he hasn't got the pace for it now.

Agree1 Disagree0

04 Aug 2016 14:51:34
He should start as CB. Don't forget that Conte has only 3 CBs ATM Zouma and Ivanovic are both injured. He will start playing with 3 CB's when he has at least 5 CB's available for rotation.

Barca were looking to bring Cuadrado in as a RB at one point, so he could cover that position too.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Aug 2016 18:01:28
Nicely remembered fuser, but I think we would have to play higher pressing with cuadrado their.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Aug 2016 19:40:54
I think we need to play a higher pressing system. The current squad aren't suited to sitting off imo. We're not defensively solid enough to pull it off, as currently we have too many weak links which are prone to lapses in concentration/ misjudgement which will leave us ripped apart.

Seriously though how good does Kantelele look?!

A midfield 3 consisting of;

Chalobah/ oscar. Kantelele/ matic
Fabregas/ Oscar

Through in Mikel and RLC for extra cover and we are looking pretty good, Kante counts as 3 mids by himself!

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed018's Note - we would be better off going with a 3 man center midfield as opposed to a 2 man.}

04 Aug 2016 12:24:34
Definitely, depending on the opposition i'd fab, kante, matic/ oscar would be my favoured option.

Agree0 Disagree3

04 Aug 2016 12:49:39
Chalobah, Kante and Fabregas. I think it's easy to decide that.

Agree4 Disagree1

04 Aug 2016 14:51:02
Also think RLC needs a two year loan maybe in the bundesliga to start playing regularly it seems to have worked wonders for Chalobah.

04 Aug 2016 16:26:44
Chalobah barely got a game at Napoli.

Agree0 Disagree4

04 Aug 2016 16:47:40
Harry Kane hardly got to game when he was out on about five different loans but he does pretty well when Tottenham gave him his chance.

Challobah grew up and had learnt a better attitude.

I just don't get what people see in Willian.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

04 Aug 2016 11:20:20
Yeah I know what you mean, runs around a lot but doesn't score or assist enough, and that's what he's judged on being a winger/ wide forward, just look at Sanches at Arsenal similar position runs about after they ball, but he's good for 20 goals a season.

Agree2 Disagree0

04 Aug 2016 11:53:16
His work rate is brilliant, I always wondered would he be better off playing seeping. Maybe as part of a midfield 3 with kante and faberagas/ matic.

Agree0 Disagree1

04 Aug 2016 12:09:36
As I've said previously, playing deeper and through the middle is his more natural position, not as a winger.

Comparing him to Sanchez isn't exactly like for like as Sanchez is more of a forward, as evidenced by his career through Udinese/ Barcelona/ Chile.

What's everyone's analysis of the game last night then?

I thought Aina came back strongly and put in a good performance after his poor showing against Madrid but he's learning and its shows last night that he's learning things quickly the more game time he gets. For me he must start at right back against West Ham. We really do miss Zouma I'm not happy with Cahill and Terry starting as our centre back pair. I don't see why we just don't stump up the money for Koulibaly and get it done.

As for central midfield in not sure two in the centre will work. Chalobah and Kante together will be very solid and I think Chalobah deserves a run of games. I think if we switch to a three and add Fabregas that's a very good midfield as Chalobah and Kante can do the work while Cesc pulls the strings. Chalobah's offensive game has really impressed me pre season and he has a very useful long range strike.

For me apart from free kicks Cuadrado is better going forward than Willian for me he's played very well pre season and I'd give him another chance. Conte's confidence in him should also help. That's why I'd go for a 4-3-3 get a couple of workhorses around Cesc I. e Chalobah and Kante and let the front three concentrate on scoring goals and creating chances. Now and the last two seasons I've still felt we haven't got that dangerous player on the right who can cut in on his left and score goals. Griezmann or Mahrez would be ideal but not going to happen.

Think you got it all right except aina. Mind you I don't think Willian helps on that side. Butt herald we've leaked is the right side. Cahill aina Willian. Just like last year with ivanovic. For me conte has to make room for cesc.
One thing I don't like the look of is this stand off football. I was hoping so much for high press attacking style. For one we know hazard fab and the rest of attackers can't play this defensive stuff that well. But hey it is pre season. Signings to come, players to leave.

Agree1 Disagree2

04 Aug 2016 03:02:44
With conte talking about Kante seeing time tonight I'll be very intrigued to see if the other midfielder brought on is Oscar or Chalobah. Based on form there should only be one thought but we'll see.

Believable1 Unbelievable2

04 Aug 2016 05:05:24
Turns out he brought on both and they both played pretty well! Kante looked very tidy and quick on the ball! Defence not too great again though.

Agree1 Disagree1

04 Aug 2016 08:44:34
He did look good. I'm not so sure about aina. Last two games I've watched his and Willian's side is leaking all the goals, and ivanovic isn't going to sort this either. Surprised azpilicueta hasn't played right back and Kennedy left back.

Agree2 Disagree3

04 Aug 2016 11:13:45
I agree in the main, but Kenedy is not a left-back. not even close.

I think Kenedy will move on loan.

I stand corrected by Oscar. He had a pretty nice game all things considered.
