ED is there any possibility that Chelsea will sell David luis. The reason I ask is because as the season progresses his ability to defend gets worse and worse. He has no idea about position and with ivanovic at right back it is a recipe for disaster as we have seen in the last few games. I feel we need to purchase a new centre back or give one of the kids a chance. Put the Spanish lad at right back and it hurts to say it but drop ivanovic. Sort out the defence and rest will come {Ed002's Note - I wouldn't think so.}

Let's see how he does under a new manager

we desperately need some new improvement there, its such a vital place and we are horrible at it :( {Ed002's Note - No.}

Ed, two things to ask. Are we interested in signing Stephan El Shaarawy from AC Milan for 20 million euros? And now that Benitez is our manager, will that mean our interest in Falcao will fade?
Thanks in advance

Hey Guys,

Can someone tell me what Benitez's style of play is?

Tactics, formations, stuff like that.

Thanks Guys

Samir

Believable0 Unbelievable1

I believe defensive counter attacking is his approach. 4-3-2-1 is what i think he will adopt.

It is something similar to Dortmund

It's like wimbledon, but with more moaning by the manager.

Guys you do not have to love Benitez to support Chelsea, i really hate a few players of our own but i still support them and hope for the best. The truth is he is our manager and you should support him but you dont have to like him.
It was a stupid move from Abramovich no doubt but i hope if we get Jose/pep he wil give them a chance and not sack them for atleast 5 years even if they have horrible results.

Duus.

From what I can see we need someone to organise the team give us some structure. Something Benitez is good at.
Longer term the club have other targets for manager, that was the case even with RDM.
Benitez had been out of work for a while and looking to rebuild his reputation and get a top club next season. If he fails he will be sacked and will probably not get a top club again. So it is in his interest to make this work and like he says win trophies.

Believable3 Unbelievable1

22 Nov 2012 21:20:20
Let's tell some truths here: RDM did not win the CL. The players did because they started playing again after AVB left and especially JT, FL and DD. RDM was always a mediocre manager in a big job. His time was always going to be short.
Raffa is on another level and personally I expect to see improvement in the way we play and especially defend. Proitos

I have to say I was really pleased with Rafa press conference. All he wants is to do well and win trophies. I say lets get behind him and judge him at the end of the season.

Over these last 24 hours, an outpouring of hatred and animosity has been directed toward our new manager, Rafa Benitez, in the wake of his replacing Robbie. I think the decision was very harsh on RDM, a guy i will always respect and love as legend of this club. However, I think this could be a smart move.

First of all, some facts about RDM:

He was only ever going to be an interim but Roman couldn't fire him after the CL win, so Roman never actually wanted to appoint him, but in the circumstances it was the only reasonable option.

Roman was just waiting for RDM to slip up so that he could pull the trigger.

We got extremely lucky in our cup wins with RDM's defensive football last year.

We ended up 6th in the league.

As we saw with the Juventus defeat, he is tactically inept.

Before he come to Chelsea he had no experience at the highest level.

In my opinion, most of our wins this season have come down to individual brilliance. He has been tactically outsmarted on a number of occasion, eg Swansea, West Brom, Juve

On the other hand, Benitez:

Has experience at the highest level - he won the Champions League with flipping Liverpool for crying out loud! He was twice UEFA manager of the year! He won the league with Valencia twice, defeating Barcelona and the Madrid of the Galacticos era - now that is pretty darn impressive.

He is tactically very good and a meticulous planner.

He got Liverpool a tidy 2nd in the league - that is unthinkable at the moment!

The main problem with Benitez is his personality. He had trouble with the board at Liverpool, wanting full control and running of the club. His man management is apparently poor.

Considering he has been out of work for 2 years, and bombed at Inter, I think (or hope) his ego will have shrunk a bit. Roman won't give him any control and hopefully he will learn from his mistakes and not be so cold with the players.

It is a short term deal and he won't be able to make any huge transfer blunders, he won't have a huge input in the recruitment of playing personnel. He will do the majority of his work on the pitch, with his tactics, as he won't have a huge amount of power off it.

At the end of the day, he was the most viable short term option, if we choose to go for Pep or Jose in the summer, which i sincerely hope we do.

He is our manager we should get behind him. The past is the past. I know he won't be able to win over all of the fans but a win against City will give him some breathing space. I know a rant against a certain Whisky-Nose would go down well!

Sorry for the long winded post, just wanted to give you lads some perspective, which i think has been lacking from this whole scenario.

Great post mate. to be honest even when RDM won the champions league. i didnt want him as manager, harsh YES, but so so many good reasons. all i want rafa to do is ..
1, dump mikel, rubbish footballing ability in every aspect of his game.
2 get a few more leaders on the pitch!
3 play MARKO MARIN.
4 dont favoutise fernando torres, if hes playing cack get him off.
5 close down, preasure & commitment on the pitch, hi tempo for attacking gifted players, non of thi RDM tactics of let them come at us and stand off bulshet.

Thanks guys. I just don't see why everyone is against it. I think Rafa is a top class manager and I think he'll do well, hopefully just warming Jose's seat until June.

Believable6 Unbelievable4

I am angrier now about it than I was yesterday. No matter what he does I will never be able to like the man, the sooner he is gone the better.
Maybe RDM was not the right man long term but he won us the champions league something no one else had managed. It is very easy for people to critisize the guy saying he got lucky/tactically inept whatever. Yes we rode our luck but I would argue that in winning it he was far from inept.
RDM is a class act and handled himself with great dignity during his time with us. I wish him the best of luck and would like to say thanks Robbie.

I've got to say i was shocked when i woke up yesterday to see that RDM was sacked. I know results and performance have not been well lately but never gave much thought to this being an option. I was certainly hoping that Pep was gonna step in and take the job but quite early in the day it became apparent that wasn't gonna happen. I knew then who it was gonna be and for a few hours i was upset and angry with the choice. Once that wore off a bit I realized it all comes down to results. If Rafa can provide results then I'm certainly gonna be fine with this whole process. Thats all that matters at this point, results}

Believable7 Unbelievable2

I totally agree with you mate.......we all know how we feel about Rafa, but honestly speaking when i logically think about it he can definitely give us what we want.He has a talented team laid out for him and he just needs to be the tactical mastermind that he is capable of and we might have a disciplined and professional team which is the need of the hour for chelsea........anyways it was nice to hear your thoughts.

Rafa is tactically sound, if there is one man who can get the best out of torres (if it is still possible to do) then it will be him.He will sort the defence out, and get the team playing to a system that will hopefully bring success. Remember he has on occasions outhought both Fergie and the special one. Most Liverpool fans speak highly of him so we may well be fortunate .. 22 Nov 2012 14:33:32 Chelsea is a big club with Fantastic players, every manager wants to coach a such a big team. But I would never take that job, in respect for my former team at Liverpool, no matter what. For me there is only one club in England, and that's Liverpool." (2007) "If Chelsea are naive and pure then I'm Little Red Riding Hood." (2007) "We don't need to give away flags for our fans to wave - our supporters are always there with their hearts, and that is all we need. It's the passion of the fans that helps to win matches - not flags." (in regards to the 2007 Champions League semi-final between the sides. The quote has been immortalised in a plaque at Liverpool's training ground) "I'm sure Chelsea do not like playing Liverpool. When they are talking and talking and talking before the game it means they are worried. Maybe they're afraid?" (on the same tie) "We were good friends until Liverpool started winning, then he started changing his mind." (on then Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho) "After the game, Sheila, who was sitting right in line in the main stand, said to me that the ball had crossed the line. She is a very honest person and that was good enough for me. It was a goal." (on taking his secretary's word that Luis Garcia's so-called 'ghost goal' had crossed the line in the 2005 Champions League semi-final between the sides) "To me, Arsenal played much better football two or three years ago. They won matches and were exciting to watch. Barcelona and Milan too. They create excitement so how can you say Chelsea are the best in the world?" (after Chelsea's first Premier League title win). All quotes from our new boss slating our wonderful club. I spit on him and the decision t make him manager, he doesn't deserve our support, but our players and our great club do .so because of that I'm gonna support him. Eli

Right so, here goes. I'm gonna get slated for this...

Rafa (can't beleive i'm calling him that) did well at Liverpool when he inherited Houlliers squad and coached them. When it was left to him to buy players and run the club, he imploded. We won't have that problem as he will be strictly coaching the team and not running the club. So fingers crossed it works out.
Same goes for his time at Valencia, he started well when he inherited the squad, then he got to big for his boots and started wanting to run the club again, and again it didnt work out. At Inter, lets face it, he had an average squad of experienced players who had just exceeded all expectations due to Jose. He is nowhere near Jose's level and struggled to live up to what Jose achieved, i honestly think anyone would have. So tbh i'm not surprised he struggled.

Now from all accounts, its well known he had an ego and didn't get along with the owners at any of his previous clubs. But he knows that Roman runs the club, so there should be no problem with that, he knows he's coming in on an Interim basis to coach the team, so there should be no power struggle. And you hope that with the experience at Inter and the fact he hasn't managed for so long, that his Ego has been well and truly dampened, hopefully he's more humble and his man management may have improved.

Know one can deny he does build a solid team, so we should see some solid performances and hopefully a sustained title challenge this season. And from remembering playing him when he was at Liverpool, his tactical knowse was quite annoyingly good. Liverpool always gave the top teams a good game if memory serves right.

I know i'm only focusing on the positives, but i don't want to dwell on the negatives or i might as well stop watching football.

On this one i'm gonna go with my head over my heart (even though it kills me), and give him a chance. If we beat City and can go into the new year top of the league, then maybe a few others will give him a chance? Wishful thinking i know.

Come on guys, we're Chelsea fans. Lets support the club no matter what. I do have quite a bit of respect for him for walking into the lions den knowing he is going to get abused. Takes some balls to be fair to the guy.

OsgoodIsKing

Believable6 Unbelievable6

Agree with it all Osgood, until you said you respected him in the last paragraph. Doesn't take balls at all, takes a man willing to spit in the face of LFC (his old club), knowing full well what he has said about our very own club. I will support him, but only knowing he will be a distant memory come June 2013.

Melbourne CFC

I am really surprised Rafa has taken this job knowing its only for the short term. Still I suppose that means he has little to lose and it will lift his profile again. He has been out of work for too long. I can`t say I`m surprised at the hue and cry from Chelsea fans. What I would say is don`t listen to all that crap about him having a huge ego and wanting to be in total control, that is just crap. He is one of the most genuine, honest, hardworking and talented managers out there. Forget all that has been said in the gutter press. You have appointed a man who will give your club his all for the cause. He is a analytical and tactical genius who will bring you success. Yes I am a red and would love to see him personally succeed because he was given a raw deal at LFC and if he`d been given more support who knows what might have been. I don`t believe in going back so I`m more than satisfied with Brendan Rodgers. You have no choice you have to get behind him for your teams sake. Probably get loads of stick for this, but I am really sure history will say he was a great choice even if its only to steady the ship till another certain Spanish magician takes his place. Give Rafa the chance and respect he deserves. I wish him luck, we`re not anywhere near at the moment so hope he wins the title for you. YNWA

We are akin to the Mafia, with the feared leader at the top who nobody ever sees surrounded by yes men.
Anyone who doesn't do exactly what he wants is disposed with.
No class and no way to run a football club.
Love our club but not the way it is run at the moment.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

"why was Roberto not allowed to sign a striker" get your head checked mate. We made efforts to sign a number of strikers, none of which were available. The club spent £60m+ on world class attacking midfielders and RDM could not implement a system in which they could function effectively on a consistent basis.

Melbourne CFC

Agree6 Disagree3

Hello My dear blue brothers,

We all respect Roberto for his contribution to this club. However some one of us said the most important match for us is one after we suffer our first defeat of the season. Well that is true. Because we never get to see the tactical side of the manager unless things get bit out of hands.
Moving out of the sentiment, lets look at the real issues with Roberto's sacking. Last year we had a team with full of defensive and physical players and we employed a manager who plays a fully attacking football. He didnt change his ideologies and got sacked. Comes in Di matteo and strikes gold as his tactics goes in with the players preferred style of play.
Move to this year, we revamp the team to have best of attackers designed for a 4-2-3-1 system. However 3 things failed. Our manager was defensive minded, our defensive midfield players (ramires and mikel) and defensive player (Luiz) player were not suited for this system and top of it all our striker form is nothing less than pathetic.
Roberto failed to see that mikel is not agile enough (like vidal, yan m'villa or toure), ramires cannot construct the passes from the midfield (like modric, moutinho, pirlo), luiz cannot maintain his line (like puyol, ramos, hummels) and torres cannot play.
All this combined together against him. Basically last 2 managers played against the players natural style. Hazard and Mata cannot defend well. we leaked goals.
This is where "the special one" is a success as he plays to the strength of his players. I now wish Real madrid wins this year's champions league and la liga. After all this will enable him to return as he has an unfinished business here in merry old London as a true blue!!

Waiting to see him tell the press, "Well guys, I am back!"

I posted after the Juve game regarding our tactical approach and I think it is still relevant to our situation (even with RDM gone).

I feel that we must press the opposition further up the field and as a team. We tend to leave it to our front 4 to work our forward press whilst our defensive midfielders and our full-backs are sitting too deep. We need to pressure the opposition better in their defensive half so that we start to create more turnovers in critical areas and can attack with numbers. In the last few games we have attacked on the counter and this means we often have just two or three involved in the attack. We need to use the press to bring our defensive midfielders and full-backs into our attacking game. There was a 5 minute patch just after half time in Turin where we pressed well and Ramires made two or three interceptions inside our attacking half. We have also done it well at times during other matches this season (against Man Utd, Arsenal, and Tottenham). We just need to start doing it for 90 minutes each match.

I think if we can improve our press in this manner then we will be a much more effective side.

That's why you need someone like Rafa- pragmatic, knows that winning is everything, not just playing pretty stuff.

Your defense is crap. David Luiz in particular will need to shape up quick or be acquainted with the bench.

I just love this new myth about "exciting" Chelsea- where did you dig that one up from? Was that the time Colin Lee got 4 in a game (in the Second Division!) and the MOTD cameras just happened to be there that day? Or was it from that wonderful free-flowing dynamic stuff Mourinho used to play? Before you dismiss Rafa for "style", consider these results from within a few weeks of each other:
MU 1 Liverpool 4
Liverpool 4 Madrid 0
Liverpool 4 Arsenal 4
Chelsea 4 Liverpool 4
Liverpool 5 Villa 0

Yes, I remember nearly falling asleep during all those games! With the attacking players you have at your disposal, I wouldn't worry too much about your "style"- it'll be a whole heap better than the drivel that produced the flukiest CL win ever.

And as for zonal marking, maybe if you check a few stats you might find that your counter arguments don't stack up so well. And for a laugh, www.youtube.com/watch?v=aC3HzCVVV14

Ed002, I am assuming we approached Pep for the job. Obviously he was not interested, as he wouldn't be, in taking any job currently, due to deciding on sabbatical. Can you give any information out as to whether pep closed the door on Chelsea completely, or was it simply as I stated before (taking a break from football)?

Did discussions take place as to whether he would be interested at the end of the season, or as I'm guessing , it is far to early to comment?

Thanks for all your work today, you are due a beer or three I reckon.

I think Benitez will do an excellent job there but no matter how well he does he will know there is no long term future for ANY
manager with your current owner

To me the RDM sacking was very surprising but at the end of the day it somewhat makes sense. To start off the run of results were not good enough plain and simple. Another thing which to me was far more troubling was the fighting within the team. There has been a lot said in the media and a lot of it is probably off the mark however having a divided team is simply unnaceptable. Third RDM was not rotating the squad and this could have lead to a very ugly winter unless things didn't change. There were also other contributing factors that were troubling but those were my three main concerns. As far as the firing goes can anyone argue that it hasn't always turned out positive (don't give me Jose because that was mutual). Moving on to Rafa and I think regardless of personal opinions we must get behind him. In all honesty he checks a lot of the boxes that we were struggling in. He provides steel in defense that we've been lacking for some time. He rotates the squad very regularly which will help us down the line. And finally if anyone in the world will get Torres scoring again it would be him. I agree one player doesn't dominate the team however who is to say we will get another top class striker in January. To start Falcao will cost a crap ton and athletico realize they will get mega money either in January or the summer so they might as well keep him and give themselves the best shot to get champions league money as well as his transfer fee. Bottom line you can't argue with the results of firings in the past and not getting behind the club isn't productive and sells yourself short as a true blue.

the biggest problem with our team of late is that we are really weak up top! its clear as day that as good as it is playing the 3 players like mata, oscar and hazard but it makes the team weak! the ball doesnt stick up top! we miss drogba we need a player of his power to hold it up and bring in players into the game! we need to be set up different and 1 of the 3 to be dropped

Ed - Do you think that Rafa Benitez will drop John Obi Mikel and what is your predicted formation for the Chelsea-Man City game ? {Ed002's Note - It will be the same as the last predicted formation I gave you.}

Ed002 - I thought you were a grouch only on the main page but I see you are the same with your own people

am i the only one who thinks the problem with our formation at the moment is that we essentially play with 4 attacking midfielders. i agree mikel has looked suspect in the dm role but ramires is not a defensive midfielder and often is caught out of position because he wants to get forward and attack so our formation ends up as a sort of 4-1-4-1 with mikel being the only one actually in a defensive position in midfield. Thoughts?

Believable2 Unbelievable1

Maybe true, and mikel too slow with and without ball in his feet. he just keep himself moving, but no contribution at all to the team. just my thought.

I believe the problem is that we dont have a deep lying playmaker. We need someone like schwienstieger or pirlo
