I think u lot just hate mikel, even now that he is playing d game of his life, even now he is improving per match u just cant resist blaming him. Rdm got his tactics and his choice of players and his supstitute all wrong 2day and dats what cost us. Someone said mikel went out and ramires played better wel i think as soon as mikel went out they took hold of d midfield completely as if we werent there. Someone in here said mikel didnt do his job, i av a question for u what is mikel's job and what is rami's job?. Ramires plays a match full of mistakes today yet no one slates him here and mikel played a match short of mistakes and he is now d problem. I was hoping in his absence u would have valued him more considering ur beloved ramires was in the pitch and yet we hardly even had possetion. Pls get behind mikel and apericiate the lad just once he could be slow but he has a presence in that centre.

I agree that Mikel is often made the scapegoat of a poor Chelsea performance. That's unfair. However, I think there are some legitimate concerns about Mikel in the 4-2-3-1. He was excellent at times when we used the 4-3-3 because he was required to operate in a smaller zone and his job was to regain and then retain possession. In his current role, Mikel is required to cover a far larger area, regain possession and then get us moving forward. He is not the most agile or maneuverable chap and he struggles to make a creative or attacking pass. Nevertheless, he has been serviceable this season and I think he is making improvements to his game. I am glad that someone is standing up for him! :)

The load on Mikel is too much. It would have been easier with a better pairing other than Ramires who is a poor passer of the ball and can't retain possession. A good Coach will play 4-3-3 with the players we have with Mikel doing the simple but vital things in midfield.

Agree0 Disagree0

He's was good because we played defensive so it made look like he did a lot more. Ur unbelievable, he has been terrible since he's been here. Would he get in at Munich, barca, juve, ac, inter, united? I don't think so, so why Chelsea.?

Agree1 Disagree0

J22 please look at the 2nd goal of west broom. You will know what is the problem with Mikel. As the opposition player is tracked by bertrand, mikel backs away giving the option for the lad to shoot in to our D-box. He is not closing him down. That led to the goal. I am not saying mikel is worse but certainly he can't be the connecting joint in our new attack system. We need players who can close down, cover a large area of pitch, push the ball quickly up the pitch. Someone like vidal, yan'm villa, ya ya toure, ferdinandho mould of player.

What are the tie breaker rules for The group stage. I heard Shaktar has already gone through even though they are only on 10 points. If juve beats them and Chelsea wins by 4 or more goals would Shaktar not be out. Thanks

Believable1 Unbelievable1

It's done on head to head not goal difference, if teams are in the same points.....right.

Agree0 Disagree0

It is head to head away goals. Our only way of progressing is Shaktar and ourselves winning.

A few observations:

1. A tactical decision needs to be made regarding our press. At the moment, our front four are pressing well in our attacking half but are getting little or no support from our holding midfielders or the back 4. The gap between the attacking and holding midfielders is far too great which inhibits our abilities to force a turnover in attacking areas and also makes us vulnerable to the counter attack. If we are going to press high (and i think we should) then we must do it as a team.
2. Making 'like-for-like' substitutions alone is often not enough to change a game. Teams like Man Utd, Juve, even Wigan can change their formation during a match to good effect. We should work on the 4-3-3 in training and even experiment with three at the back so that we have that option as well.
3. Ivanovic needs a run at CB. He was our most composed defender against Juve and the Cahill-Luiz partnership has struggled in recent weeks. Iva at CB would also allow Azpi to start at RB where he has impressed...

Comments are welcome. I would be interested to hear peoples thoughts.

J22

Believable2 Unbelievable0

I wouldn't call Ivanovich composed, he made a number of silly errors in the first half.

Was listening to after the game this evening and a chelsea fan had quite a good point and wondered what people on think of it. He said that Falcao at 50 million might not be the right way to go. We have already experienced Shevchenko unable to perform with a massive pricetag and now itsnlooking more and more like that Torres hasnsuccumbed to it also. After the first time in god knows how long we are in the black, as a club, do we need to spend a huge transfer fee on someone, who is undoubtedly a fantastic and prolific striker, but may suffer the same with the pressure of all that money plus "win the premier league for us" and ,if things go our way in Ukraine, "retain the CL for us as well" the caller also pointed out that a better option would be Huntelaar at a much cheaper price and would no doubt get goals for us with the midfield we are creating at the moment. Thoughts anyone ?

Believable1 Unbelievable2

I agree, Huntelaar would be my first choice of January signings, he wouldn't cost a fortune and would do his bit!

Cahill and Luiz are a poor partnership. Obi and Rami are a poor partnership.......Far to lightweight in midfield. We need a big strong player in obi's position and another big solid midfielder and play only 2 of either Mata, Hazard or Oscar and rotate them. And of course a strong striker. We need a Ramos, a 6'5" Makelele, a Toure and Falcao.

Just to make it clear I'm not one of those fans who as soon as we lose a few games is screaming for a new manager. But any manager who plays Luiz hasn't got a clue. I love his personality but he's costing us. If we had played our back four as, Azpi Cahill Ivan Ash, we would be through in the champions league and top of the BPL. His lack of defensive ability cost us against United, West Brom, Juve tonight, Shaktar. The guys a joke. If RDM can't see that Luiz isn't good enough well then he himslef isn't to be honest. Also why play a right back right wing when you have Moses, Marin, Sturridge and Oscar on the bench. Just Ridiculous! If RDM starts Luiz against City then his time is up cos we will lose and Roman will lose his patience.

We where set up for that game to go two ways.A draw or defeat. Its a shame to see our skillfull players struggle when told to be more defensive. What i dont understand is we spend a lot of money on quality players like hazard, mata, oscar etc and Dont let them express themselves. We look a lot better when we attack teams because the defence has looked terrible in the last month or so. I like di matteo but you just know hes keeping the seat warm for guardiola or jose. The quicker one of them two comes in the better. Lets be honest and not get carried away by di matteo guiding us to champions league glory, we had huge amounts of luck as well as players knowing it was there last chance which motivated them to go that extra step. The performances in the last two months have been poor. Personally i would like to see a lotmore changes between january and the summer. I think at least one defender, two midfielders and two strikers need to come in. I know a lot of people would not agree but david luiz should not be playing at centre back. Too many times he gets caught out of position. I like to see my centre backs be defenders first, which is not the way luiz plays. Cole has had a couple of poor performances of late. Torres days as a chelsea player look to be coming to an end. Lampard looks to be moving on possibly in january so we deffinetly need to strengthen the squad. My options would be:
Strikers; falcao,cavani,lewandowski,huntelaar,lorente,neymar
Midfield: fellani,fernando,fernandinho.
Defence: hummels,chilleni,subotic,godin

Jan:
Cech
Ivanovic terry cahill cole
Ramires fernandinho
Hazard mata oscar
Falcao

Next season:
Courtois
Azipicueta hummels cahill luiz
Ramires oscar
Hazard mata neymar
Falcao

As a life long fan, I'm gutted about the result today, but even more gutted and disgusted about the reaction of our 'fans'. We can't win every game, we're currently going through a spell of bad form which all teams do. Instead of a knee-jerk reaction and sacking Di-Matteo we just need to get behind the guy!

JD

Believable3 Unbelievable1

No. im sorry, he aint a good manager! we are playing exactly the same as we did under avb. his tactics are all wrong. he hasnt changed this team oscar & mata do that on ther own. im a life long fan, i never backed scolari, i never backed AVB and i aint backing dimatteo. how can you play azpi right midfield and play mikel & luiz? constantly aswell. mikel luiz argued, mikel ramires argued he hasnt got 100 percent trust from all players, hes loseing the dressing room from what ive heard. MIKEL is trying to be a leader because RDM plays him all the time, but you gotta perform before you can try being the big i am look at me rdm loves the way i dwell on the ball. its a joke. as soon as mikel went off ramires not only looked more comfortable but played better. robbie is the downfall of his own mistakes and cost us the CL. if your supporting him still its upto you, we have the right not to like a player or coaching staff.

20 Nov 2012 21:58:31
So will you all blame Torres tonight. We didn't create one chance in the 2nd half. It goes to show we just aren't creating the chances where you open up teams and give the strikers really good chances, not against the top teams anyway. Falcao will not make the difference. I know we won the CL last year but if I had the luck we had I would have won the lottery already. Remember we finished 5th in the league. Fans keep going on about Mata, Hazard and Oscar but I just don't see the balance in the side with the 3. Great players but the 3 together cause the side problems. We are conceding in every game and it is no surprise as they leave us so open. We need a more physical presence from the middle up top. RDM said after Sat that he knew what the prob was but wouldn't tell the reporter. I'd love to know what it is as I didn't see a great change tonight. I know we still have a very slim chance to qualify but think its over. I would say RDM is under pressure now with the way Abramovich works. We need to turn it around very quickly as a defeat against city at the weekend could see us lagging in the league also.

20 Nov 2012 21:51:12
terrible tactics, we do we persist at backing off, were 10 times better when we preasure, RDM CL last year was luck, he needs to go. same with mikel. see him argueing with ramires and luiz, hes the one who ruins our game. no urgency & no closing down equals a terrible managed team, with no passion at the moment. that game needed MARKO MARIN! moses doesnt suit playing with oscar mata, he would be better upfront than hazard! azpillicueta should have been right back ivan centre luiz dropped. RDM has his favourites its obvious.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

If you are Roman Abramovich, shouldn't you be asking your advisors, your board, or whoever he wishes to talk football matter to - why do i have to sack a manager every year and i can't get any progress?

JG

Believable3 Unbelievable0

And getting out of CL has cost us around half the Falcao buy out clause. So just forget anything fancy in January now. Another year, another manager, same problems. That just requires usual solution. A new manager midway through and expectations to get this mess around. It worked before.

JG {Ed002's Note - Cheslea are not out of the Champions League.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Well, it would require Shakhtar to win against Juve at home. Doable, i agree. But don't think Juve doesn't know that. Juve drawing in Ukraine is so much more likely, than us not conceding to the Danes. And with the way we play and the form we are in - who says a victory?

Our midfield got dominated, their wingbacks had so much space going forward.and if you want to play the false nine then you have to make sure your midfield players know how to distribute quickly and also have good off the ball positioning to always create a passing outlet.rdm needs to think harder and turn this slump around.i'm not going to single out any one player cause i think all of them
should've performed better.

Terrible result, I'm well aware, but why has everyone on here thrown in the towel? We are 2 points behind Juve, 2! Not 3,4, or 5 but 2. We still have a shot at qualifying. I wouldn't automatically say that Shaktar will field a weak team. They are unbeaten at home for quite a while, and I expect them to be proud of that record.

If we do get knocked out, I think it would probably spell the end of RDM. First manager to win us CL will never be forgotten, but neither would first team to win CL, to get knocked out in group stages.

Myself, I don't blame RDM. He may lack a little in tactics, but it isn't like SAF is the tactical genius at Man Utd either. We need to bring someone in, to work on that aspect, and have RDM as a motivator. RDM has very little say in transfers, and I think a large amount of the blame rests with the board. For the past 3 years I've watched my team crumble at this time of year. 3 different managers, and all have experience the same thing.

I think if we get knocked out of CL, Roman will go balls out for Falcao, however, mid way through the season, I don't see Athletico selling. No matter the price. They are fighting for La Liga, and will probably win Europa again. Falcao is intrigul to their success. IMO anything would be better than our current options. Sturridge needs to play until January. Torres needs to train with the youth. If an injury happens to Sturridge, Piazon needs to get a run. Fernando, for me, doesn't care about this club anymore, and does not deserve to have the honour of playing for it.

Sorry for the rant

Believable4 Unbelievable2

Im sorry mate, but with the way he set us to play backing off and not preasuring shows he needs to go. giving pirlo space like that is beyond a joke. we have played best when we attack presure and close down with urgency, napoli 2nd leg, spurs fa cup, arsenal, spurs in prem. even man u after 2 minutes. but instead we back off and treat opponents with too much respect. i hope he goes loved him as a player, he should have done a hiddink after fa & cl and blagged a job somewhere else. at the end of the day he got lucky last year & thats wh chelsea wasnt going to gife him the job.

not sure if Falcao would be right for us tbh.

I know many of you will disagree but I think we need someone who is powerful and can dominate defenders and pull them out of position for the midfield to exploit.

In Falcao, we will get a fantastic finisher but what good will that be if he is put as a one man striker and is marked out of the game just like Torres currently is.

Also, we don't have that much trouble scoring, we just lack power currently in the core of the team and are leaking goals left, right and centre. I would prefer us to go for a replacement for Terry (Shawcross?) and a powerful Essien-like midfielder who can replace the workmanlike Jon Obi Mikel to link the defense to midfield.

I would wait until the summer to get hold of two new strikers, Falcao (at the right price) and, as mentioned above, a powerhouse like Loic Remy, Balotelli (if he shows more maturity) or Cavani.

Just my two cents.

Do you know how many balls did we win after Cech kick in in the first half? And he kicked in way over a dozen.

None.

This is what you get when you cut your team weight and height in half. That's under the label of "age".

Two best players in the game are Cech and Cole. How bout we cut them too? They are 30 already, you know...

Let the football manager players tell us that Courtois and Bertrand are ready to take over, haha.

JG

So are you saying Hazard and Oscar have been rubbish...

I am saying that Cech and Cole were the best players so far in the game. How on earth does this label anyone rubbish?

If Torres was on some of they long balls would of stuck

If Torres was on, you'd be saying RDM is clueless and Torres is rubbish. Juventus are just a better team. Well balanced, hard working, commited team.

Really unlucky, same old story not taking our chances although Could be 3- 2 to Juve already. Ivanovic is terrible at the back giving the ball away in so many dangerous positions, Move Cesar to the rb, take Ivanovic off as we r down and bring on Torres.

I've seen this line up rumoured:

---------------Cech---------------
------Ivanovic--Luiz--Cahill--------
Apzilicueta---Ramires---Mikel---Cole
----------Mata----Oscar----------
-------------Hazard---------------

I'm not saying this is the definite line up, but I've seen it rumoured.

If though it is the actual line up, the I can see RDM's thinking. In the previous game, Lichensteiner and Asamoah caused havoc down the wings, and Robbie want to halt this completely.

It may work.

Thoughts?

It was said by a lot of people that the job Di Matteo was given midway through last season and the job he was given in the summer were completely different, although he did well with the job finishing the season off he is, as expected by many, struggling in the second job.

I believe that a loss against Juventus tonight will see him leave the club, but even a win shouldn't be considered enough to save him.

You look at some big fixtures so far this season (Juventus at home - draw, Shakhtar away - loss, Man Utd at home - loss, Liverpool at home - draw) and add some other fixtures (West Brom away - loss, Swansea away - draw) it really hasn't been good enough and results like the 4-2 win over Spurs are soon forgotten.

Other than flashes of individual brilliance from the likes of Oscar, Hazard and Mata have we really played that well? We are never going to be Barcelona and should never aspire to be a carbon copy of them, but thoughts of us playing tiki-taka or total football are well wide of the mark; far to often we have been negative in our outlook during big games - that has cost us points and should be laid at the managements door.

Hate to be so negative but early season form just papered over what, for me, are very obvious cracks at the club.

Surewould

Believable7 Unbelievable4

Not many expected him to win 2 trophies did they?

Agree1 Disagree1

B*******. No manager in the world can make Torres go score goals. And if in the seasons before we could rely on Drogba to the benefit of Ancelotti's title year, or last year's CL heroics, this year we got same Torres, but noone to cover for his shortcomings.

Don't tell me RDM has any input in bringing in the players. Every manager would ask for a striker if they were CFC manager. None would say, i'm fine, we are good with what we've got.

Do not blame RDM just because he has no players at crucial positions. It is easy to give a breather to Mata and Oscar And Hazard when you are not forced to play them almost every minute or risk loosing points.

Board failed to assemble a proper squad again. And if the manager will carry the blame for it, i'd be shocked.

JG

Agree2 Disagree1

No but he did it in a completely different set of circumstances than he now finds himself in - can you see him winning two or even one trophy this season or next?

Surewould

Agree1 Disagree2

I see Chelsea winning many titles in the years ahead, not excluding this year. I very well see us winning first title in this calendar year. RDM has way better chances than he had last year when he took over. We are short of playing staff. And if the board decides to call it a career on Lamps and Cole in january. RDM will have even more problems, than he already has.

He stated clearly he needs them at the club. We already have a super young starting 11 and even younger bench. We are in transition of squad rebuilding. It is a super tough job to handle and RDM is doing it admirably well. If you can't see that, i don't know what are you watching.

Ed002, I don't believe it for a second, but could you please squash this stupid talk of Marin putting in a transfer request. Do you see him leaving Chelsea, on a permanent or loan basis, in the next window?

Melbourne CFC {Ed002's Note - I don't know of any such talk.}

Believable1 Unbelievable0

I've only heard it from posters on the site, but am pretty sure some paper had it as a story. Thanks for clearing it up.

Melbourne CFC {Ed002's Note - The problem has been injury and now match fitness. There is a slim chance of a loan in January.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah I figured as much in regards to fitness. If Chelsea did decide to loan him out would you expect it to be to another English team, in order to get him use to the premier league, or is the interest from Borussia Monchengladbach something Chelsea would seriously consider?

Thanks again.

Melbourne CFC {Ed002's Note - As far as I know there are two clubs who have enquired after him at this time - one of these equiries was from BM but via his agent.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ok thanks Ed002, appreciate it. Not Chelsea related, but do you expect Jovetic to move to City? Have we lost all interest?

Melbourne CFC {Ed002's Note - I expect him to move to Manchester City in the summer. At present Chelsea has no interest - driven particularly by the difficulties in trying to broker a deal with some Italian sides.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Cheers for the info Ed. Sorry to pester you, but will you be in Turin tonight?

If we could just field a team like this:

Cech

Azpilicueta*Cahill*Terry*Cole

Ramires*Essien

Mata*Oscar*Hazard

Falcao

-Why did we loan out Essien? And not rather sell mikel?
-Why did we ever think that torres could be a 25+goal a season man and sturridge to be enough back-up?
-Why haven't we tried playing Luiz as a holding midfielder?
-And please give Romeu and Marin more game time!

Inns:Falcao,Lukaku(Loan recall) or Bony,A nother CM/CDM maybe paulinho or McEachran recall

out:Torres,Lampard(injury problems),Malouda

PREDICTED team after Jan:

Cech

Azpilicueta*Luiz*Terry*Cole

Ramires*Romeu/Mikel

Hazard*Oscar*Mata

Falcao

Believable4 Unbelievable3

Did you watch the back end of last season? Essien was not his usual self, and still isn't at Madrid. He was brought in to fill gaps. He plays at LB half the time Ffs. The Spainish league is nowhere near as physically demanding as in England, and it is pointless having him on the books, and not getting use out of him.

We can't just simply sell Mikel either. We need to receive an offer, and he needs to accept the terms.

Romeu has been getting more game time recently, and what is so hard to understand that Marin has been injured, consistently, and is not yet 100% fit. It isn't like he has been playing with the U21's all year. He has only been able to play twice for them. He will get a run, when he is fully fit and ready.

Melbourne CFC

Agree1 Disagree1

Have you been watching La Liga and have you seen the defensive game of Essien i mean he starts in front of Marcelo and Coentrao at LWB and even at times he has been playing as a attacking midfielder+Michael has been playing in Eng for how long,yes i think its clever getting players off the paylist.but not essien ,and all chelsea players will get 100's of offers when put on a transfer list even mikel,Marin well he's been on the bench for how long now?He scored for the u21's in midweek and still the manager won't bring him on when we need attackers.Also he is 100% fit he wouldn't be on the bench if he wasn't and you play your players not thinking about the injuries i mean if we are going to protect him like he's a baby the whole time then whats the point in buying him?Romeu only started because Ramires hadn't had a rest so he wouldn't have lasted the 90 and also lamps is out. So Melbourne next time you criticize my statement first look at the facts you kangaroo! {Ed002's Note - Essien's time at Chelsea is over. Marin has not been fit for most of teh season so far.}

Agree2 Disagree0

Coentrao and Marcelo have being injured, hence why Essiel played LB for some games.
