Reading through this page, I'm seeing sometimes people are of the mindset we should just sell a player based on current play, the likes of Oscar and Willian come to mind. I know Chelsea are a world class team and that we are constantly linked with world class players, that could 'displace' players who may make a mistake or two. I do also acknowledge there are fans who appreciate and stick up for these players, but then there are people who fail to realise that they haven't even hit their prime. Oscar is still very young and Willian is only 26, exceptional talents that will only improve. what's to say we should sell these players and see them thrive element with maturity and experience. Matic comes to mind in recent history, hardly a look in on the field, and Robben probably highlighting this even more. Yes we want to build the best team possible, that's fantasy football for you, but realistically the long term is what we should be looking at. It's just a shame sometimes about our loan policies and the reality that most young talent just won't cut it. but that's a different matter altogether

Regarding Willian, let's not forget that Drogba was inconsistent when he first came to the Bridge - his first season was full of failures to control the ball and his link-up play was not the best. Look what he became

Good post. As fans we seem to think we know more about football than the club do, which is entirely wrong. (Whereas Liverpool fans on there page have more clue about it than Rodgers and them clowns have).

We are in a fantastic position, I've said it a lot, we have stunning coaches, manager and owner, as well as a top 3 team worldwide in my opinion

It is fun to speculate though, and any opinions should be posted before being shot down by people thinking the poster is moaning ect

My point as well Aron, yes it's nice to think that things work in a fantasy football style and we have to admit quite a few of these become reality. But we are far from experts with somewhat a limited knoweldge, with no real affiliation to the club other than being fans and research of news stories and rumours. This website is the best thing we have, for that I am glad, but let appreciate what we have and the talent across the whole club.

I believe when Matic left he was more of an AM. A position we had an abundance of current stars, Mata, Hazard, Oscar etc and lots of upcoming talent on loan. He only made the switch to CM/DM after 6 months or so, I think, at Benfica. If he hadn't moved on I doubt he'd have made the switch of positions and he wouldn't be the player we have today. So yes while a lot of poeple/pundits look at it and can't believe we let him go, he simply wasn't anywhere near the player we let go in the first place.

But I do see your point though.

I am very guilty of this especially about Oscar. That said I think much of my though goes down to two things; balancing the books and player expectations. It's very clear that the club will be balancing the books and if we're bringing in high price players then we have to get the money from somewhere. The second part is player preferences which is something I speculate on but have absolutely no idea in reality. For me I question wether Oscar would settle for not being an automatic selection when he can go to another top 10 club in the world like PSG and be a regular. So for me I think this is kind of adding 1&1 to get 2 but as others have said my perception could be very off.

Wow City really weren't good today. They looked devoid of ideas going forward, don't think I noticed Aguero apart from his yellow. Their defense was shaky as well. I'm hoping for a Kompany-Demichelis partnership against us. I know Kompany is a good cb but at times he's so so rash in his play.
Definitely shouldn't underestimate them but I think we can be confident playing them, especially without Yaya. Let's keep the run going!

Suddenly we've got a 5 point lead, and our goal difference is 9 goals better. Happy days!

Okay guys let's breath no need to get too excited, still a long way to go, we are sitting pretty yesss, sorry almost got carried away, okay so beat city at the bridge and then we are staring the beautiful trophy right in the eyes Okay. Gooners did good but from me and every other blue out there hope they lose their next game. :) Come on Chelsea.

Breath, breath. :)

Yeah I know, it's only January so early days yet. However, when we're on form and clicking, then we're a tough team to beat.
One worry for us is that our rotation players have to pick up some kind of decent form. Still competing in 4 competitions so we need everyone. Ramires especially could be a key player in the bigger games. His energy is crucial in certain games.
We have to make it our year, let's get some trophies! :)

PS: also maybe Varane or Pogba ;-)

I'm dumb founded why more teams don't play city this way. We did last year at the etihad and controlled the game. Stoke did it earlier in the year. It seems most teams play this way against us but not city for whatever reason.

Yaya Toure is at ACN.I've wrote about month ago this will happen when he is not around.

Let's hope Cote d'Ivoire go deep into the Africa Cup then :)

So happy about it, but we lost an 8 point lead. So 5 point lead needs to turn into more and more. I'll rest when were 12 points clear lol

We will play both Manchester and Liverpool teams on Stamford Bridge! Huge advantage! Man.City will have to play at Old Trafford, so if we win on 31.January we will have great opportunity to win PL.
Toure is obviously their main man. Our problem could be absence of Fabregas & Matic, hopefully it won't happen.

I believe Jose will set up to counter, a win would be nice for us, but a draw would suffice, whereas, they need the W.

I agree with Aron on how we set up. We don't need a win and they're getting to that point. I'd also argue we are at our best when teams allow us to counterattack with space.

Outside info: Reus had a friendly match today in Spain on a winter tour of BVB. He gave a fan his signature on a Real jersey.

Funny assumption: Florentino Perez made his move to solve CR7 - Bale crisis.

Right.

Now, I wouldn't normally be celebrating a 2-0 lead for the Gooners. But, in this case.

In defence of Willian!

I've noticed that here, and other places, Willian gets a rough ride from the fans. Personally I'm a big fan of his, and think that the fact that what he does for the team goes largely unnoticed is a bit of a scandal.

First obvious thing is his effort levels, they're unbelievable! He has been moulded into the perfect 'Mourihno player', working hard up and down the pitch; selflessly working for the team.

He also gets a hard time for not beating players enough. Although he has the ability to go past players this simply isn't his game. What he does do well, which aids others massively, is pick the ball up and drive into space. This aids the likes of Costa, Hazard and Oscar because driving into space pulls defenders out of position leaving more space for teammates. Whilst he might not be a natural finisher, as demonstrated yesterday, he does chip in with the odd goal - the old saying of 'a scorer of great goals, not a great goal scorer' comes to mind.

Would I prefer Reus on the right? Yes! Would I like to see Willian sold to make room for Reus? Categorically no!

Great post, I rate him. Like you say, what he does for the team is awesome. If we get Rues, then we have to keep Willian. He will be used a lot in the important CL games, in order to defend when we go in front. Also when he does get brought on in the later half of a game, he can break will real pace, as LFC know! :)

Would love to see a stat for how many times he has hit the woodwork haha

I'm sorry but 1 goal and 1 assist in 20 odd games this season in the league is just not good enough.

I completely agree with the original poster. Willian adds much needed balance to our team and is probably the most selfless player we have in terms of making runs off the ball to free up space for others. There is much more to football than just goals and assists stats! The only thing I would say he could run in behind opposition defences a bit more rather than coming square to receive the ball because he has the pace to stretch teams.

18 Jan 2015 21:55:08
I've said before that most of his strengths aren't as valuable in our team. He'd be fabulous in a team that primarily counter attacks such as an atletico Madrid. Unfortunately his defensive abilities aren't as valuable for us when most opposition fullbacks don't cross midfield in 90 minutes.

18 Jan 2015 22:11:07
To say Willians work rate goes un noticed is not true. We all see it. Especially his tracking back. Shame he doesn't try so hard using his pace going forward. Great player but also the most frustrating!!

Exactly right Blueboy, whenever he sprints back I'm cheering for him, we all are. But when it's 4 on 2 and Willian has it, I cringe.

I'm not asking for a 15 goal season, with 5 assists. I just want him to get goals. If he adds goals he will be a freak, then again he already is :)

19 Jan 2015 06:30:54
Great post J, completely agree. I feel William is and will be a great player for us in the future.

Schurrle has more goals than Willian this season, and he has played a lot less.
