I just watched the u21 game against fulham. Certain individuals really impressed me and others performed okay, and looked a tad aprehensive.

Sam Walker: Didnt really have alot to do. Two real saves, and dealt with them comfortably. Made a tiny error at the end, but nothing to dramatic.

Tika Musonda: Started off abit shakey, but gradually as the game wore on he became more involved and stood out for me. Strong on the ball and good in one on one defending.

Andreas Christensen: For a 16 year old he was extremely composed. Good range of passing, dealt with everything comfortably, and didnt let the pressure of playing with JT effect him.

John Terry: A solid 45 minutes for JT. Good in possession, slipped up early on but Walker was there to cover up. As always he led with passion and was a good help to the young lads.

Adam Nditi: Great pass to assit Feruz. Quite similar to Ashley Cole in the way he attacks and deffends, by bombing up and down that left flank constantly. Made a few good driving runs and tackles.

Billy Clifford: A good 45 minutes from Billy. Had a few decents attemps from 20 yards or so. Linked up very well with Loftus-Cheek. Good passing range.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek: Came ever so close to scoring a great low drive from distance. Good strong player. Very promosing.

George Saville: My man of the match. Fantastic work rate all night long. Never stopped, battled for every ball, and to be fair unlucky not to have a goal or two to his name. I expect him to make his first team debut this season.

Milan Lalkovic: A quite game for Lalkovic. When he did get the ball he did look lively down the right wing. Got several balls into the box and had a couple of tame shots. He has electric pace though. My word.

Lewis Baker: Another solid game from Baker. Scored a good penaltym showed his versatallity when covering back deeper in the midfield. Has two great feet.

Islam Feruz: For his standars, he had a quiet night, although he did score. A good finish to be fair to the lad. Attempted a siccor kick moments after his goal, but missed timed it.

Subs:

Alex Davey: When he came on at HT he looked solid and comfotable whilst in possession. Didnt really have alot to do.

Lamisha Musonda: When he came on he looked more advanced to where he normally plays. Made good runs down the left. Passing was a bit erratic at times, should of scored but a good game for him.

John Swift: When he came on he made an imediate impact with a sublime pass to Lamisha Musonda. A Juan Mata type of pass spliting the defence and Musonda should of really scored but the Fulham keeper made a good save.

Peds

Believable7 Unbelievable1

Cheek, saville & feruz are the 3 picks for me. always consistent and always improving. feruz even though reasonably quiet his movement is very clever, watch how he drags the centre backs around always leaving gaps for our midfield to exploit. glad someone else checks out the u21s. how do you rate lalkovic? Just out of curiosity who would everyone including you Ed prefer out of Falcao, Cavani or Higuain as our main striker next season and which one would suit our style better?

CfcBenWxm {Ed018's Note - ive always said Falcao would be my first choice, although i'd be just as happy if we signed Cavani}

Believable2 Unbelievable1

Do you not think though ed paying 40 million + for what will be a 27 and a half year old in the summer would be too overpriced? Wouldn't we be better off goin for a cheaper option and younger in Higuain or Lewandowski although it looks as if Lewandowski is destined to sign for united? {Ed018's Note - i'd be fine with Higuain as well. all these players mentioned are all top forwards and i'd be happy with anyone of them.}

Agree3 Disagree3

My preference in order would be Cavani, Higuain then Falcao. Although Falcao is probably the best, he's also the oldest and i'm not sure he will be value for money in the end.

Just a question for you guys. If we but Fellaini do you keep Luiz in the midfield or push him back into defense?

Tk

Believable1 Unbelievable2

Keep luiz in the midfield he is a great player but i don't trust him in defence to many costly mistakes i think we have all wanted to see him in midfielf and its working well apart from some sloppy passing last night and in the villa game

Can anybody take him even for £ 5m? Certainly not. Very disgusting that we'll still pay him over 30m pounds in the next three yrs. He deserves an award, possibly the Best Flop of all time.

Looking back at the season so far what we realy miss is a leader with Terry injured and likley to play less and less and lamps leaving we have no one to take controll and boost us on the pitch. We need a player like Ivanovich or luiz someone with heart and passion to step up and fill this role

Believable3 Unbelievable2

If I had to guess Luiz will be our next captain.

I honestly believe that with a goal scorer,, either Ba or somebody else and somebody to play beside Luiz we can be title contenders,, we play good football but nobody to put ball into back of net,, and sometimes we get bullied by teams who are more physical so Fellani would fit the bill.. I know Fellani has been better further up field but he is box to box,, we have a team but no striker, 2 players and we are top table team

Totally agree mate but I'd prefer we went back to 4-3-3 with hopefully if we sign him Fellaini one side of Luiz and Oscar the other would love to see a bid for a proven goalscorer who would be cheaper I'd really like to see Higuain in the summer with Torres head first out of here.

CfcBenWxm

Agree4 Disagree4

100% agreed, we have out played most of the teams we have lost to and we've only looked average under RDM when we sat back and try to play defensive with Bertrand in mid and etc..

Agree2 Disagree4

The way i see our pivot
mikel luiz - defensive
ramires luiz - defensive but more pace and ballance. both can attack aswell as defend.
lampard luiz- the power, box to box, plenty of goals, my slack defensive duties.
luiz oscar- perfect link up to marin mata hazard. creativityis deffo thr, oscar can play this role brilliantly.
then we have debruyne & mceachran coming back

I know I might get slated for this however, I am not prepared to write this season off as a failure - even if we fail to claim a single piece of silverware.

Since the Mourinho era Cech, Cole, JT, Lamps and Drogba have been the spine of the first 11 week in, week out. Each manager, from Mourinho to Di Matteo, has built a team around them and much of our success has been due to their wealth of experience. For the first time in a long while, we see a team sheet with just one or two of those names starting each match. Yes, we have spent big on new signings, but we have lost so much experience in such a short space of time.

A lot of our signings come from clubs where the expectations are lower and the football is different. Experience of pl football and dealing with the expectations at Chelsea will be essential to our success on the field. If we gain nothing more than that experience this season then I am satisfied that this group can be successful next season and into the future.

On reflection, I think we set the bar too high this season. Winning the UCL set a standard (and starting this season so well didn't help) but imagine if we had lost in Munich? 1 game from 50 in a hectic season but it shaped all our expectations for 2012/13. So what is reasonable? Well, UCL qualification is a must of course but what else? Perhaps a run at the FA Cup? Who knows but the future looks alright to me.

Apologies for the length of the post.

Believable4 Unbelievable4

When you have Community Shield, Super Cup, World Club Cup, League Cup you expect to win at least one.

I agree about expectations. For me this season is all about transition and will be happy to achieve 4th or better in the league any thing else will be a bonus

Agree2 Disagree1

10 Jan 2013 16:28:08
A11,

I agree that you would have expected us to have won one of those but tbh I was more disappointed to go out of the UCL in the group stage than to lose any of those games. The UCL, PL and FA Cup is where I would like to see Chelsea compete on a consistent basis. Thats just my opinion though...

J22

Agree2 Disagree1

Not over concerned about charity shield or super cup but World club cup is not something you get into very often,, this year is a transition period and what doesn't help and makes things seem it worse is that we're are out champions lg and that a man is in charge who slated our club,, I would love to win Europa league and fa cup and be in top 3 but realistically I cannot see it,,

Agree0 Disagree0

Staying in the UCL would have been great for sure and its annoying because fans of other clubs (jealous and know nothing) keep going on about us going out. We went out with the best record of any team that's been knocked out the group stage and Man Utd went out to an easy group last year and everyone forgot that.
Anyway from that off topic bit, I agree with you on what you said but definitely would have been nice to get a trophy this season with what was available.

A11

Agree1 Disagree0

No one is denying all that. What is bothering me is that club is covered by an invisible vale of naivity and bad decision making which makes no footballing sense whatsoever?
1. Who made the decision to get rid of all our strikers based on a wild assumption that Torres will improve when all the signs suggested otherwise?
2. Who decided this stupid policy about age limits for contract extensions?
3. There was never a plan of transition was there? They expected instant success from the new acquisitions. Who on earth would think that from a newly formed team with no experience?

I'd like to say although we lost we were brilliant, for a lot time the refs have ruined our games for one reason or another.
Swansea are known to play a passing game yet they were more bothered grabbing our shirts.
Ivan made mistakes but we should have scored.
I'd like to see how this team would do under Benitez if Torres wasn't in the squad, if Demba Ba plays we will have so many fast paced attacks and chances, I predict we will win at the Liberty if Demba Ba starts.
If Torres was the player we all thought was joining Chelsea we would have added at least 4 trophies this year.

I fail to see why so many of us are condemning rafa to the gallows. yes, we lost a game we dominated. let in two easy goals but....

but i have seen enough from the team this season to think that there is a good probability that we might go to the liberty stadium and thump then 4-0 or 5-0 .

bdw, heres my opinion on the whole lampard new deal saga.
unlike with avb, this time i think he has accepted his place in the subs list.if it were me, i would want him in the team just so i could see that trademark late run in the box and tap in. but hey, thats just me. i am a fairly young chelsea supporter so lampard was in the team when i started watching epl. kinda tough to see him go.

Sub him at half time and we lose 1-0, now to win in 90 mins we got to win 3-0, quite a big ask when a teams defending like there life's on it, same as us beating barca and bauyern last year,

chelsea is proof that money doesnt make the world go round and throwing money around doesnt make you a class act. balance is required and your team i feel is very top heavy crackin going forward but unless you park the bus you are always susceptable to letting in goals. last night and a few previous results prove this. truth is the proof is in the pudding and you guys have lost a lot of games this season that you just shouldnt have with the firepower you have . it isnt rafa's fault it wasnt di matteo's or avb's its partly the old and past it senior players influence (avb) or a meddling owner who thinks you can win games by out striking other teams more thought needs to go into the recruitment and less emphasis on the old guard and silky wingers/strikes

And as the post below points out, TORRES is our only striker for europa! Taison?? No, will be cup tied as well if he joins! We need to go all out and get Falcao/Cavaini!! Add 1 of them with Fellaini and Isco. With these 3 added to the squad i beleive we can close the gap at the top and fight for the two domestic cups!! And finally sell/loan TORRES out NOW!! Would rather Feruz play every europa cup game instead of goldie locks!!! Boy i am so annoyed about last night!! Watching the first half thinking it was Barca!! Thats how good i thought we was! Wont blame Ivan, did you see the 30yard shot from goldie locks?? then when Ivan hit it from 30yards, on target, good save! Ivan looks a much better striker than TORRES! I read up your posts this morning and some are quite strange to be honest.

Do you actually believe that Roman himself, as you put it, insists on managers playing Torres? As in "Rafa the job is yours, but Torres must start". You do understand that it is b*******, don't you?

When i say Rafa has lost the games against QPR, Fulham, Corinthians and Swans - which we should have comfortably won, it is not because i don't like Rafa. It is not because the players did not convert the chances, but tell me - who decides who plays on the pitch that certain day, or the substitutions? Not Rafa? Roman, maybe?

Don't be ridiculous. Yesterday - Ba on the bench, Torres on the pitch - 1. Oscar on the right wing, Ramires in the centre - 2. Substitutions - each at least 10-15 minutes too late - 3. Every substitution, except the Ba substitution did not make any difference.

Yes Ivanovic made two stupid mistakes, it cost us goals. But had we not conceded it would have been as bad of a game. And it is the manager who made those decisions, noone else.

There was no difference in this game and the QPR game. Again selection ridiculous. Substitutions tardy and useless. How hard it is, like Harry has put it.

And he will start Torres again. And he'll be useless again. And we have just extended Lukaku stay in WBA. And De Bruyne at Bremen. Who sees any sense in this?

he has the authority..
he can bring zidane back..ronaldo back..
or even ask zola to play..
its his bloody mind...not manager..nor coaches..
if spurs finished above us...we can all finally conclude..that our owner doesnt have any brains..

Agree2 Disagree1

You've actually lost the plot JG, I'm sorry mate. You are talking as if we were played off the park yesterday and it was a massive game for the club.

Let me put things into perspective on both fronts.

1.
Shots 20-4 (Chelsea), On Target 7-3 (Chelsea), Corners 6-0 (Chelsea), Pass % 86-77 (Chelsea), Possession 66-34 (Chelsea), Time in Opp half % 61-39 (Chelsea) and so on.

2.
It was the Capital One Cup FFS. How in any way shape on form is it an important trophy? Financially? Nope. Qualification for Europa? We don't want or need. Fan & team morale? Sure it would be a boost if we went to Wembley and win a cup but there is another cup final to be played there, which is far more important.

Let me ask you a simple question JG, would you prefer Ba to have started against Swansea in the mickey mouse, or against Stoke in the league? I'm sure we both would prefer he started both games but we both know how unlikely that was.

Then you mention De Bruyne and Lukaku. Have you considered, for just one minute, that the reason you would consider either good enough for the squad because they have been gaining valuable experience all year on loan? That if either were at Chelsea that they would not make an immediate impact, or start every game.

I hate Rafa and I've said it from day one, and that ain't changing. But we played well enough to win yesterday and although his substitutions were as usual woefully late on, if he has one eye on Saturday and starts Ba headlining a strong team, I won't care. (Not that I can say I really do anyway as its the Mickey Mouse and we werent that bad).

Sorry for the rant but you're negativity to the club as a whole is reaching new extremes.

Melbourne,

I saw the game. As i have seen almost every game of Chelsea for the last 15 years, or so. I saw the possession. I saw the great play of Hazard and Mata up front. But i have not seen Torres involved into neither of those.

Are we expecting Mata to be scoring goals for us every game now? Let's get real - he's our best player, but he's not Messi. Agree?

The reason i'm talking of Lukaku, is because we both know that he'd offer us more than Torres. He is scoring goals at WBA and we are locked here with Torres playing every game. Every! (ok, Juventus away and Southampton away were exception). If Torres can play every game, why can't Ba do that?

Yes, you, me and everyone would prefer Ba starting every game of ours onwards. He did that for Newcastle, why can't he do that for us? But here's the problem.

We still seem to think that Torres is some sort of a valuable asset and that his super fragile self esteem would get mortally wounded, had he been relegated to the bench for, say, two games in a row.

i don't care for any mickey mouse cup. The only trophy worth playing for this season is qualifying for CL next term. The rest i don't care. But you know - i don't decide those things.

But Rafa thinks that an away game to a mighty Southampton in one of the cups is more important than the game against QPR at home.

but you're also missing a point. We have played our strongest 11. Ok - 10. At home. We just can't put the bloody ball into the net. It's not a one off. It's a common tendency these days.

Apart for sorry Villa, we tend to score none at home in the league. City 0-0, Fulham 0-0, QPR 0-1.

This is not a negativity. This is a reality. Teams play deep and disciplined against us. Fulham showed the way. The rest followed.

JG

Agree2 Disagree1

Its hard for us to score when there is zero movement upfront from Torres. Personally i believe if Ba had started those games we would have got 7 points instead of 2. I am not negative because i am confident in a striker of ours for the first time this season.

jordan

Agree2 Disagree0

JG stop contradicting urself and have your tea next time before posting. If rafa fielded our best 10/11 against swansea & southham how is it the same as qpr when facing 2/3 matches over 7days at the end of the year he chose to rest some players. i will bet that the game stats, except for the final score, is about the same in all 3 matches. After Ba sat out Newcas game during his trnsfer, Southhamp was the 1st oppertunity to play him and rest torres.

Not sure what subs you were looking for rafa to make at cb with terry out and luiz doing the jod in mid or why your slating Oscar who was brilliant yesterday and always putsin a good shift on both sides of the ball. i can't say for certainty the amout of control RA choses to use with his managers but i remember when we just started the season fans were frustrated with RDM for not playing all our new boys and then a report came of a visit by RA to the training ground after which no more lamps/mikel in midfield and we went on a nice unbeaten run with the Mazacar trio. By the way, Torres still wasn't scoring at that time and our defensive shape was awful and we still won.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2013 09:19:46
I was at the game last night and agree that Torres will never regain his mojo at Chelsea, after 2 years it does't matter how stubborn the owner or manager are, it aint working. In the last 5 home games since Rafa took over we have only scored in one game !
and torres has played in all 5 scoring once.
We create so many chances, but now rely on midfielders to score most of the goals. Ba at £7m and Michu at £2m show that its not about the price tag.
Another point is that Hazard needs to get his shooting boots on as we end up needing Mata or Lamps to score.
Agree that Oscar best position is not out wide and he could have played in the holding role against Swansea who put 10 men behind the ball.
How much is Torres actually worth now ? may be only a swap deal with a spanish club is the only way of recouping any value.

Torres has a 3 year deal beyond this season at 10 million pounds in wages annually. If anyone takes him for free we save 30 million pounds. That's huge. But i don't think it is possible.

Noone but Russians could be mad enough to offer him that kind of salary, but i can't see him moving to Anzhi, for instance or Zenit. Therefor we'll be forced to accumulate the difference in wages to get rid of him.

As should of been 2-3 up by first half so tactics were right,, defence were solid EXCEPT two big mistakes from ivanovic. Midfield done well,, Oscar is not as good as a winger and Ramires not as good in that pivot role as his passing isn't too draw,, and we all know that the only problem we had was Torres,, he started of first ten min and I thought he was well up for it,, they soon faded out. One point that made me laugh was that a swift counter attack and Torres looking all the way down the line was 10 yards offside ? Demba Ba had two chances a pen appeal and perfectly gd goal ruled out in 10 min.. 10 min! The fact we booed out own player is embarrassing thou,, no wonder other clubs say we plastic fans..

Have heard from a good source that Torres is involved in a swap deal with a bag of cement. The cement is a lot more mobile around the area.

Ed002, How long are Chelsea going to persist with the Torres project, it's getting embarresing. I know there are no clubs crazy enough to pay his wages but He dosn't contribute so we have to drop him and bring someone else to support Ba.

Hi all Chelsea fans only site I no that i can talk to Chelsea fans now I am the biggest fan of fernando Torres his movement is phenomenal but demba Ba came on for 10 minutes and did more than he did all game they defended so so deep that Torres game running in behind there wasn't room for that we needed a target man to cut midfield out which is why I was shouting to bring Ba on rafa is the problem no matter what, should of known this and played Ba bet he plays Ba Saturday against stoke long ball tactics we've give Torres chances something's not rite but think Ba and lukuka are the future but Torres will come good with us or with someone else, class is permanent doesn't just go thanks still beat them at there place

Can anyone shed any light on whether Torres was booed by the home supporters when he was subbed?

Lol do you REALLY need to ask?

Yes he was, which is sad, as looks bad on us as supporters.
What little confidence he had will be in tatters now !

And so what, he is a spoilt little brat bringing down the club. He made a threat to leave last summer if he wasnt 1st choice striker, there was a reason we played Drogba most of the time last season and thats because Drogba is a goal machine. Ba scored in his first 34mins at the club, how long did it take Torres. He is only at the club for the money, he is a has been waste of space and now the fans have really had enough of him. Roman better wake up and take note because if he keeps this up the fans will turn on him. Id rather have a Chelsea team like we have when Gullitt and Ranieri was in charge and have some pride and passion at the club than have these over-priced and over-payed prima donna's.

Really feel as though we need to go back to our old 4-3-3 formation because I feel the 4-2-3-1 isn't working. Luiz has been fantastic but he needs two box to box midfielders either side of him like Hamsik or Fellaini. We need more steel in midfield and to be more direct up front. I think two more signings in hopefully Fellaini if reports are true and someone like Cavani/Falcao in the summer. On a brighter note I feel Luiz has nailed the defensive midfield position as he covered Ivanovic brilliantly when he decided to go on a run.

Would love to see:

Cech

Azpilicueta Cahill Terry A.Cole

Oscar Luiz Fellaini

Hazard Cavani Mata

subs: Courtois, Ivanovic, Bertrand, Romeu, Ramires, Moses, Ba
Then you have box to box midfielders in Fellaini and Oscar with Luiz and a great front three to counter attack.

Then get rid off:

Turnball
Hilario
Ferreira
Mikel
Malouda
And el crappo

I hit agree because I too would like to see us return to a 4-3-3 because I think the best sides are capable of using two or three different formations during the season. I would like to see us have the option of two or three different set-up's depending on the opposition and the personnel we have available. It would make us less predictable and would also give us scope to change our shape during a game if we are struggling.

2 mistakes cost us, and we were given a lesson in how to finish, we played well but did not take our chances, we could and should have won easily.

charity shield = lost
super cup = lost
world club cup = lost

out of champions league
losing in semi final of the league cup
throwing away the points lead in the premiership

We all expected a lot of the team this year with the possibility of winning so much silverware,
if we don't buck up our ideas we will be lucky to finish in the top 4. Its all very well thrashing sides but if you don't win when it counts we will end up like Arsenal, getting all the praise for the pretty football, but winning nothing.
At the moment I am hoping we finish in the top 4, I can't see us winning anything this year, but lets hope the team improves and we lose the players we need to and bring in the players and manager (I don't think Raffa is the long term answer) we need.

I disagree about Rafa, compared to our last 2 managers i don't think he a put a wrong foot yet. Similar results but it seems to be on the field as i think he's putting our boys in a position to succeed. Didn't feel that way most of the time with our last 2 managers, just my opinion.

You have to ask yourself what would we have won should Torres have got the boot in the summer for his pathetic tantrum and Drogba stayed on for another season?Scott M.
