Would any eds care to comment on Conte's future at the club? To me, the reporting on his potential departure seems extraordinarily groundless, even by tabloid standards. Chelsea seem to be backing him in the transfer market, results, if not 100% ideal, are not terrible, and I haven't heard any quotes from Conte or the board that would indicate a serious conflict. So I can only conclude that the 'Conte leaving' stories are just fearmongering to sell papers to nervous fans. Is there any actual substance to these?

{Ed001's Note - there is some substance to it, he has made comments about wanting to go back to Italy. He was not fully settled here. However, his family have now come over, so that might change things. If they settle in England that would make a huge difference to him.}

Thanks ed. I can understand missing one's home country. The amount written on it still seems awfully speculative to me but I guess that's how it goes.

{Ed001's Note - a lot is, but there is an underlying reason for all the speculation. Sadly people want to speculate to build it into a big story, as little ones do not get clicks. Personally I hope he stays, it is good for the game having so many of the better managers in the game in English footie.}

Conte has to help himself though, and he can't make the same mistake Mourinho made in his last half season at Chelsea. Continuously picking his experienced players that are out of form, and hoping they'll regain form. Willian is badly out of form, so why not give Musonda a start if Eden or Pedro needs a rest? Christensen and Rudiger have been our best CBs probably, so why not play them and put Luiz in midfield (as it's been evident that you lose midfield control with Fab in there)?

He has to start being brave with his decisions. Christensen is young but has excelled at every opportunity. Rudiger is new but has been very very good for us so far. Musonda is young, but Willian's been crap and Mus's looked pretty good so far whenever he's played. Moses is now injured as well, so in order to keep Zappa fresh for the PL games I hope Conte gives Dujon Sterling a chance in the League Cup game next week.

I agree Jackson. Willian needs to be dropped until he finds his form. It looks like he lost his form si ce the passing of his mother. so sad. He has been really good for Chelsea but itmoght be time to bench him more often.

On the Totally Football podcast this week, Rafa Honigstein said that Conte will probaly move on in the Summer and that we've had early talks with Thomas Tuchel.

He's a decent journo but hopefully wrong on this occasion (albeit Tuchel would be a decent option if 'The Hammer' left. )

In my opinion touchel is the complete and utter worse case, and all out attack manager who came in stuck tactically with Dortmund and fell out with there board, imagine him under our board and in prem if your not tactically on point it’s shows, it’s ok in Bundeslig where you have 4/ 5 tough games ( not opponents ) in the league, only manager is like would be Algeri, I’d be gutted if conte walked away. Such a top class manager, feel we couldn of backed him bit more,

I really don't think Tuchel would be first choice if Conte did go. But they need to plan for succession.

I never really pay any attention to the media nowadays but personally I'd be surprised if he did indeed stay. We're a club that likes to go through manager to manager whenever things go south not matter how highly rated you are or much you're loved by fans (Mourinho, Ancelotti) . If we fail to win anything this year or we fall far behind in the league he'll be gone as hard as it is to say. I remember reading a while ago as well that he wanted more control and to be seen as an actual manager rather than a "Head coach". Club is bigger than anyone so if he does go we'll move on as always, but this one would hurt more than any other.

My guess is that every football fan believes that the media/ press desperately try to undermine/ sensationalise all aspects of their club.
Chelsea as the best team in the world understandably attract a much wider media commentary than any other team.
The unfortunate thing is that most of the comments made by nearly all of the various forms of media are total rubbish!

I'm with Matt on this. I don't like Tuchel, at all. He's an all out gungho attack manager, and unless you've got ridiculously talented attackers like City, that's not going to work. If Conte were to move on I would actually like us to maybe get Sarri. Brilliant coach, though it's doubtful he'd leave Napoli with them doing so well.

I'd go with Sarri too, although he's equally as gungho.

What a bad week, morata now Kante, in my opinion not a big deal for palace game but after that it will be, things that went for us last year going against us already. Worrying.

Never ideal when players get injured or suspended. I try and look at the positive possibilities. Suspensions have given a opportunity to Christensen and that’s worked out well.
Bats has now got an opportunity with the Morata injury and I believe and hope he proves the doubters wrong.
I except that Kante being out is more problematic because he is such a unique player but it’s up to Conte and the player he chooses to step up to plate.

Yup, and hamstring issues usually take a while to fully heal. We might be without the both of them for a couple of weeks.

Hopefully Drinkwater is fit again by next week, as Baka-Drinky in midfield should be solid enough most games. And I hope Conte also starts to rotate Bakayoko a bit against easier teams. We need him even more without Kante so can't risk losing him to injury as well.

Agree Jacks i think with Drinkwater ready we should be covered in Mid. Bats need to step up now. A goal for him in the International will do wonders for his moral. Needs to spill over in Epl.

Disapointing result yesterday. Held back from posting anything kneejerk as needed time to let it sink in.

Here are my observations:

1) City looked fresher than us and were much better at moving the ball when they had it and closing when they didn't. I think Conte had deliberately set us up to play on the counter because he knew we would be too tired to play a full pressing game after a hard fought game against Ath. Madrid. With the depth of City's squad, they could rotate and still have world class players pressing. Plus they had an extra day's rest. This exposes two things: our lack of depth in squad and the advantage you get from extra rest. Both have been pointed out before but worth noting again.

2) The Morata substitution was the changing point in the game. With Willian introduced, I believe this was an attempt to inject some pressing further up the field to stop their passing game and put pressure on them playing it out from defence. This massively backfired and we were left with no-one to play target man and hold the ball up. When Hazard did receive the ball, he was instantly surrounded by 3 players and starved of a pass. On top of this, Willian was dreadful. I don't think he successfully completed a pass in that first half and wasn't much better in the second. I believe this was a gamble by Conte that backfired and he needs to share in the blame for that decision, despite the player letting him down.

3) Christensen is a real find. If he stays with us, he'll be our captain in the next 5 years.

4) Bakayoko looked lost when asked to play in a midfield 3. He didn't seem sure whether he was supposed to be attacking (like Fabregas) or defending (like Kante) . In the end he did little of both. He's only young though so it's probably just inexperience.

5) We missed David Luiz's ball playing ability. The were quite a few times that we needed him to collect the ball and run with it out of defence, commit a couple of players and then pass it through midfield to our playmakers. Instead we were ponderous, apart from Christensen.

6) WHY DID WE SELL DE BRUYNE? and Robben, Lukaku, and Mata for that matter. ;-)

7) Despite our mistakes, we have to give City credit for playing as well as they did. They look similar to the Barcelona team that spammed people in the later 2000s. Another world class defender and maybe even a galactico striker (Messi next summer? ) and only 3-4 teams would be able to rival them. Currently Chelsea isn't on of them. They have the players, the togetherness, and they are looking much more resilient and hard to beat than they did last year.

8) I have a lot of respect for Cahill, but I don't think he should be in our defence ahead of Rudiger, Christensen, Luiz, and/ or Azpi. His appearances should start to be controlled like Terry's.

Attacking wise we looked horrible without Morata up front. Batshuayi should've come on for him, but what's done is done.
City looked very good, but our defense was strong as well. They had a hard time creating any good chances, and needed a special shot from KDB to beat us. So if anything, I'm very confident about our defense.

Hopefully Conte trusts Batshuayi to replace Morata while he is injured. He knows how to score, and while his overall play perhaps isn't quite good enough, he does get goals and that's what wins you games.

We'll have better days, and Conte will learn from the mistake of putting Willian on instead of Batshuayi. Onwards and upwards.

That was hands down our worst performance in quite a few years. Don't ever like to blame Conte but i don't know what we were doing when Morata went off. Constant hoof ball to Hazard? Constantly passing it back without any intention to go forward. my god that was horrible. Of course once we got Bats on we could hold the ball a bit more. who would've thought huh?

Oh well hopefully Morata's injury isn't too bad and good thing it's an international break now. We were never favourites to begin the season like last year, but after that I'd be stunned if the trophy doesn't end up in Manchester. One positive although was Christensen, he was class and hands down our best player. This game will hopefully mean he starts from now on, he's our best ball playing CB and rarely makes mistakes.

In all fairness he's not as good on the ball as Luiz but defensive wise he's flawless.

Hey ed2 mate or ed1 if he's still on sabbatical

Is chelsea interested in Isco at all? He's a classy player and wouldimprove us so much!

{Ed001's Note - the Isco that has just signed a new long term contract and is Zidane's pet project? It really doesn't matter, so long as Zidane is there it is very unlikely they will let him go, at least right now. Zidane was the one that convinced Madrid to buy him in the first place when no one else at the club thought he was the right choice. Zidane loves him.}

Absolutely gutted Musonda wasn't even involved for this game, i understand not wanting to take risks but not even putting him on the bench is harsh. Qarabag was maybe one of the worst teams we've played in Europe, it could've been a perfect opportunity to play him in the 2nd half and let him show what he is capable of without any pressure. Hope he starts against Forest in the cup, he deserves the chance and has waited long enough for it. Can't afford to let this lad slip away, really think he'll be a special player in a few years if given the chance.

Musonda is a good young player and he will get his chance.
Its not always easy for a young player to break into the first team squad of a big team like Chelsea. Let's be patient with the coach's decision on Musonda (remember his preseason was a bit sketchy) .
I strongly believe that Musonda, Loftus Cheek (if he stays fit) and A. Christensen (if he extends his deal) will make it at Chelsea.

One player unlikely to feature is Danny Drinkwater after he picked up a muscular injury in his calf in training yesterday. Conte says Eden Hazard will be named on the bench again as his recovery continues to be carefully managed.
